Where We Are • Youth curriculum, Body Quest: Food of the Warrior, uses 7 iPad apps • SNAP-Ed program – nutrition education program for limited-resource individuals funded by USDA, Food and Nutrition Service • 24 county paraprofessional educators covering 67 AL counties • Each educator receives mobile iPad laboratory with 25 iPads • Mobile iPad laboratory taken into 3rd grade classrooms for 1 hour lessons 3
- 5. Why We Used a Mobile iPad Laboratory The original plan was to use sets of laptops, BUT… • iPads are less expensive than laptops • iPads are lighter in weight than laptops • iPads are easier to manage than laptops 5

Purchasing iPads AU has purchased more than 600 iPads over the past 3 years. • Began with 12/educator and kids shared • Built up over time • Now have a mixture of iPad 1s, 2s and 3s It’s important to understand purchasing policies through your institution • Bid laws • Sole source vendor • Apple offers discount on 10 iPad bundles 6

Central Management Depending on number of iPads, central management can be a good idea Many different options available • We have used Casper Suite from JAMF (based on NCSU recommendation years ago) • OSU has used MaaS360 • LSU has used AirWatch Apple’s Device Enrollment Program (DEP) should make enrollment easier Another budget item! 10

- Division of responsibility like management – how much is central university IT vs extension IT vs department vs educator vs student Who will load software? Do we have WiFi? Do we have enough bandwidth? Who will do updates? Who will do inventory? When should updates be installed?
- Find someone who understands your purchasing policies.
- If you haven’t already worked out who is going to do these things, don’t expect your IT department to be sympathetic or accommodating. Scratch-n-dent from Apple for refurbs can be a possibility to save some $$. Check with your rep.
- We use one e-mail address/iTunes account per mobile lab. Then we created e-mail aliases that all go to the program manager. Don’t forget to save the passwords. A good naming protocol is good for management. Especially when mixed in with everyone else’s iPads.
- Inexpensive (like the original iPad 1 case) cases have proven sufficient. No cracked screens as of 5/14/2014 with 600+ ipads in use. Now finishing 3rd year. Carrying Labs? Backpacks? “Vaultz.com” ($60) hold about 20 ipads vs rolling cart vs ?? One educator teaches in the basement with no elevator. "Wheels" carts are normal. This is something where personal preference may be as important as anything. Some value light weight, some value ease of use, some value looks, some value flexibility. Session participants mentioned “HDE Kids Light Weight Shock Proof” case which comes in bright kid friendly colors for under $20/ea. “Bretford” makes a “Dura Tough Case” also < $20/ea.
