GreenMap System provides tools and services to create locally-made maps that promote sustainability. Each GreenMap project is unique but linked by shared icons and the GreenMap.org platform. The GreenMap team works with various groups to design maps, share knowledge, and inspire local action on sustainability issues through community partnerships and storytelling. Over 500 maps have been created across 40 countries so far.

Strategies to foster OER and OER initiatives in developing regions
An OER action research project, OportUnidad, founded by the European Commission is presented. This study, lead by a partnership of European and Latin American universities, aims to increase the awareness and institutional support of OER in Latin American HE. Based in this action-research project, this article analyses the impact of digital technologies in education, particularly regarding the generation, adoption and dissemination of educational content.

Abstract:
Despite the widespread adoption of social media internationally,
little research has investigated the differences among users of
different languages. Moreover, we know relatively little about how
people reveal their location information. In this talk, I will
outline our recent characterization studies on how users of differing
geographical locations and languages use social media.
First, on geographical location: We found that 34% of users did not
provide real location information in Twitter, frequently incorporating
fake locations or sarcastic comments that can fool traditional
geographic information tools. We performed a simple machine learning
experiment to determine whether we can identify a user’s location by
only looking at what that user tweets.
Second, on language, Examining users of the top 10 languages, we
discovered cross-language differences in adoption of features such as
URLs, hashtags, mentions, replies, and retweets.
We discuss our work’s implications for research on large-scale social
systems and design of cross-cultural communication tools.

Ed H. Chi is a Staff Research Scientist at Google. Until recently, he
was the Area Manager and a Principal Scientist at Palo Alto Research
Center's Augmented Social Cognition Group. He led the group in
understanding how Web2.0 and Social Computing systems help groups of
people to remember, think and reason. Ed completed his three degrees
(B.S., M.S., and Ph.D.) in 6.5 years from University of Minnesota, and
has been doing research on user interface software systems since 1993.
He has been featured and quoted in the press, including the Economist,
Time Magazine, LA Times, and the Associated Press.
With 20 patents and over 90 research articles, his most well-known
past project is the study of Information Scent --- understanding how
users navigate and understand the Web and information environments. He
also led a group of researchers at PARC to understand the underlying
mechanisms in online social systems such as Wikipedia and social
tagging sites. He has also worked on information visualization,
computational molecular biology, ubicomp, and recommendation/search
engines, and has won awards for both teaching and research. In his spare time, Ed is an avid Taekwondo martial artist, photographer, and
snowboarder.

The Design community and particularly Design Education has geared up to enter the Social space. However today this is more “Push than Pull” with more supply and interest from designers and educators than from NGO’s and social enterprises. In order to change that we designers need to both adapt our practices and our business models. In this perspective he shared learnings from his current personal transition into social innovation and made a case for social design not necessarily being better for society or the designer’s soul but rather serving as a new and better model for design, particularly service design.
Business Origami - UX Week 2011 Workshop
Originally presented at UX Week 2011. Business Origami is a method invented by the Hitachi Design Center. Since I only learned about it over dinner conversation, all method how-to & details have been added by myself and any faults here are my own.
Here's the workshop description:
Business origami is a simple, powerful method for modelling services and systems that you can learn to use quickly and get great results in your own design projects. The simplicity is on the surface. Business origami uses stylized paper cutouts to represent the different parts of a system: the people, the locations, and channels used as well as the specific touchpoints and interactions of individual scenarios. These cutouts are arranged on a horizontal whiteboard, which allows participants to show relationships in the system, including different venues, the flow from one area to another, and the value exchanged at each interaction.
The power comes from participation. Business origami shines in a codesign workshop setting. Since it offers direct, hands-on tokens it’s easy for everyone to contribute instead of requiring skill with diagramming software or flowchart conventions. By involving a cross-section of business representatives, users, and members of the design team you can quickly capture models of current experiences and then explore opportunities for improvement or create entirely new designs. Because the model is immediate and tangible it creates a shared visual reference that builds common understanding, unifying the team and the vision for the project.
This participation increases buy-in, creates common ground, and helps you facilitate a successful solution. The sessions themselves are powerful experiences for participants, but you can also use business origami models to document journey maps, scenarios, service blueprints and other downstream design deliverables.
In this session with Jess McMullin you’ll learn the fundamentals of service design (so we’re on the same page), participate in a modeling exercise yourself for current and future systems, and then analyze that model to document new opportunities. We’ll also share tips and tricks that make for successful business origami sessions and discuss how this method fits neatly into your current design process, whether you’re consciously doing cross-channel design or not.

Green Map 2014
Green Map is a mapping system that highlights natural, cultural and sustainability sites within communities. Local groups create Green Maps that identify over 170 types of community assets and challenges using standardized icons. The movement began with printed maps but now includes interactive online maps. The Green Map System provides resources for mapping projects. A new Green Map Lab will be launched in New York City to address issues like climate change and youth participation through collaborative mapping projects. The Lab aims to build capacity, foster partnerships and develop models that can be replicated in other cities.

Results of geophysics and pneumatic injection pilot tests during 2003 – 2007 yielded significant positive results for injection delivery design and contaminant mass treatment, resulting in permanent shut-down of an existing groundwater Pump & Treat system.
Accessible source areas were subsequently removed (2011) by soil excavation and treated with the placement of Emulsified Vegetable Oil EVO and zero-valent iron ZVI to accelerate treatment of impacted groundwater in overburden and weathered fractured bedrock. Post pilot test and post remediation groundwater monitoring has included analyses of CVOCs, organic fatty acids, dissolved gases and QuantArray® -Chlor to quantify key microorganisms (e.g., Dehalococcoides, Dehalobacter, etc.) and functional genes (e.g., vinyl chloride reductase, methane monooxygenase, etc.) to assess potential for reductive dechlorination and aerobic cometabolism of CVOCs.
In 2022, the first commercial application of MetaArray™ was performed at the site. MetaArray™ utilizes statistical analysis, such as principal component analysis and multivariate analysis to provide evidence that reductive dechlorination is active or even that it is slowing. This creates actionable data allowing users to save money by making important site management decisions earlier.
The results of the MetaArray™ analysis’ support vector machine (SVM) identified groundwater monitoring wells with a 80% confidence that were characterized as either Limited for Reductive Decholorination or had a High Reductive Reduction Dechlorination potential. The results of MetaArray™ will be used to further optimize the site’s post remediation monitoring program for monitored natural attenuation.

Water polluted by dyestuffs compounds is a global threat to health and the environment; accordingly, we prepared a green novel sorbent chemical and Physical system from an algae, chitosan and chitosan nanoparticle and impregnated with algae with chitosan nanocomposite for the sorption of Malachite green dye from water. The algae with chitosan nanocomposite by a simple method and used as a recyclable and effective adsorbent for the removal of malachite green dye from aqueous solutions. Algae, chitosan, chitosan nanoparticle and algae with chitosan nanocomposite were characterized using different physicochemical methods. The functional groups and chemical compounds found in algae, chitosan, chitosan algae, chitosan nanoparticle, and chitosan nanoparticle with algae were identified using FTIR, SEM, and TGADTA/DTG techniques. The optimal adsorption conditions, different dosages, pH and Temperature the amount of algae with chitosan nanocomposite were determined. At optimized conditions and the batch equilibrium studies more than 99% of the dye was removed. The adsorption process data matched well kinetics showed that the reaction order for dye varied with pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity of the algae with chitosan nanocomposite toward malachite green dye reached as high as 15.5mg/g, respectively. Finally, multiple times reusing of algae with chitosan nanocomposite and removing dye from a real wastewater has made it a promising and attractive option for further practical applications.

The popularity of functional foods among scientists and common people has been increasing day by day. Awareness and modernization make the consumer think better regarding food and nutrition. Now a day’s individual knows very well about the relation between food consumption and disease prevalence. Humans have a diversity of microbes in the gut that together form the gut microflora. Probiotics are the health-promoting live microbial cells improve host health through gut and brain connection and fighting against harmful bacteria. Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus are the two bacterial genera which are considered to be probiotic. These good bacteria are facing challenges of viability. There are so many factors such as sensitivity to heat, pH, acidity, osmotic effect, mechanical shear, chemical components, freezing and storage time as well which affects the viability of probiotics in the dairy food matrix as well as in the gut. Multiple efforts have been done in the past and ongoing in present for these beneficial microbial population stability until their destination in the gut. One of a useful technique known as microencapsulation makes the probiotic effective in the diversified conditions and maintain these microbe’s community to the optimum level for achieving targeted benefits. Dairy products are found to be an ideal vehicle for probiotic incorporation. It has been seen that the encapsulated microbial cells show higher viability than the free cells in different processing and storage conditions as well as against bile salts in the gut. They make the food functional when incorporated, without affecting the product sensory characteristics.

Evolving Lifecycles with High Resolution Site Characterization (HRSC) and 3-D...
The incorporation of a 3DCSM and completion of HRSC provided a tool for enhanced, data-driven, decisions to support a change in remediation closure strategies. Currently, an approved pilot study has been obtained to shut-down the remediation systems (ISCO, P&T) and conduct a hydraulic study under non-pumping conditions. A separate micro-biological bench scale treatability study was competed that yielded positive results for an emerging innovative technology. As a result, a field pilot study has commenced with results expected in nine-twelve months. With the results of the hydraulic study, field pilot studies and an updated risk assessment leading site monitoring optimization cost lifecycle savings upwards of $15MM towards an alternatively evolved best available technology remediation closure strategy.
