Green Manufacturing
What is Manufacturing All About?
Manufacturing is an activity
involved in turning raw materials
to finished products by some
desired process to be used for
some useful purpose.
Terms of Manufacturing
1. Product/Process Knowledge.
2. Process Capability Data.
3. Manufacturing Technology Involved.
4. Process Control Technology.
5. Quality System Infrastructure.
“Manufacturing Risk”
7
• It is well known that we always have very
limited resources to exploit rather to waste, a
risk is incepts when the amount of
manufacturing waste produced exceeds an
optimum limit and starts challenging the net
production of manufacture.
• This is the point where the need of an
alternate and efficient method is realized and
the most probable solution that can be
devised is ‘Green Manufacturing’.
History of Manufacturing
Earlier, manufacturing meant to make something from hands.
It spans the cottage industry of individuals artisans and ends
with today’s mass production for mass consumption.
** Before the Industrial revolution, most manufacturing
occurred in rural areas.
Implications of Conventional Manufacturing Processes
 Uneven Handling of Resources.
 Decreased Productivity.
 Reduced Scope of Innovation.
 Large Waste Production.
 Tough to keep pace with the
new technologies, resources
and challenges coming on the
way.
The Concept
“Green For Growth”
With increasing global warming, industrial wastes, non
bio-degradable production, green is becoming important
strategy in the manufacturing sector; sustainability in
green manufacturing is a competitive need.
What is
“Green Manufacturing “
It is basically an economized manufacturing process that
tends to exploit all the available resources leaving behind
reusable or consumable(bio degradable) waste and thus
reliving the concept of environmental sustainability.
Why an Alternate ????
Green Manufacturing
Green manufacturing Concept
⬩ The industrial facilities now capture and neutralize waste, air and water
pollutants before they can be discharged into the environment.
⬩ The improvement in Production using following techniques
o Cleaner Production
o Green Chemistry
o 3R (Reduce, Reuse and Recycling)
o Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
o Sustainable Production and Design
A Real World Example
1. The need for fossil fuels has lead to discoveries of different
methods of manufacturing that replace renewable resources.
2. Manufacturers have started the production of Bio-Degradable
poly-bags as an alternative of that of conventional poly bags
which were Non bio-Degradable.
Present Scenario
• Green economy has moved into the mainstream.
• Government & policy makers increasingly talk about it.
• To all ecological scarcities and disparities, it gives a social
justification.
** We can promote greener products by
phasing out harmful subsidies, reforming
policies and incentives, strengthening
market infrastructure, introducing new
market-based mechanisms, redirecting
public investment, and greening public
procurement.
Impact on Environmental
Sustainability
Improved Corporate Brands.
Reduced Cost.
Compliance Achieved.
Long Term Benefits.
Role of Chemical Engineer in
Green manufacturing
Defination of Chemical Engineer
who works principally in the chemical industry to convert basic raw
materials into a variety of products and deals with the design and
operation of plants and equipment.
“Saving the Environment is one of the basic role of Chemical
Engineer”
Role in Green Manufacturing
Chemical Engineers meet environmental challenges. Their unique
expertise enables them to develop advanced technologies,
monitoring devices, modelling techniques, and operating strategies
that
⬩ Reduce the volume and toxicity of pollutants allowed to enter
the air, water, and soil;
⬩ Significantly reduce the negative environmental impact of
industrial facilities, power plants, and transportation vehicles;
and
⬩ Allow greater reuse of post-consumer and post-industrial waste
streams.
Achievements in the Green Manufacturing
⬩ Chemical engineers have always been at the forefront of environmental
protection. With a unique perspective that straddles both science and
engineering, they work in teams with other professionals.
⬩ By designing complex solutions to our vexing environmental challenges,
chemical engineers are striving to save the world we live in. One success
is the conversion of the sulfur oxides in power plant gases into gypsum
for use in wallboard. The removal of trace contaminants from drinking
water by reverse osmosis is another.
Frontiers in Environmental Protection
⬩ Chemical engineers continue work on new production techniques to
reduce the environmental footprint of the chemical, pharmaceutical,
semiconductor, pulp-and-paper, petroleum-refining, and electric-power-
generation industries.
⬩ The ability to reuse waste materials helps reduce our dependence on
costly and scarce natural resources. New techniques to store energy
help minimize the need for new power plants. Enabling more efficient
use of solar energy will help to achieve a greater energy independence
country.
Innovators in Environmental Protection
There are many chemical engineers whose ideas and inventions have made
a difference in our environment today.
Future Prospect
World Business Council for Sustainable Development describes a
world in which the manufacturing industries follow life-cycle
approaches that enable dematerialization and expanded service
systems.
** This report is called Vision 2050 report and is based on Green
Manufacturing as a very crucial weapon.
Indian Scenario
India's rapid economic and industrial growth, coupled with
urbanization, has come at the high cost of increasing GHG
emissions, rising demand for scarce resources like water and
increasing waste generation, particularly from urban centers.
Today, India is one of the countries, who need to adopt this system
as soon as possible to overcome the aforesaid challenges.
“Targets”
The Manufacturing Sector needs to take concerned actions
on these three areas :
1. Green Energy
2. Green Products
3. Green Processes
Conclusions
Adoption of Green Manufacturing technologies is not just a
social obligation but a growth catalyst. It has the potential to
achieve sustainable development and eradicate poverty. A
green manufacturing economy substitutes clean energy and
low carbon technologies for fossil fuels, which addresses
climate change, creates jobs and reduces import
dependencies.
As investments in safety, energy reduction, pollution and
quality control is an investment towards the better
sustenance of life and our own future.
