We live in a world where the potential of technology to offer new ways of learning and communicating is seemingly limitless. It is exciting. It is empowering. Technology holds out the promise that education can reach people and parts of the world previously denied access. Get the technology out there and educational provision will be scaled up and children from the developing world will have the access to learning so long denied to them. Vast amounts of money are being spent promoting this view. Many careers are being built. Many reputations are being made. But can this happen? Using the case study of the University of the South Pacific and my experience of working for the Commonwealth of Learning I want to argue that this a dangerous fallacy. Sadly the promoters of this approach have forgotten, or ignore, what practitioners on the ground know so well. ICTs like educational media and the simpler technologies of blackboards and chalk are merely tools. If these tools are to provide ongoing sustainable provision, (long after the development agencies and personnel have moved on to the next “sexy” topic), attention has to be given to long term engagement with the need to build on the ground competent educational institutional leadership and management and institutional operational capacity at all levels. This will not happen overnight. In failing to address these issues we are promoting a model of technology in education in the developing world as the difference that makes no difference, the change that brings no change.

This document discusses open and distance learning (ODL) in developing societies, using the University of the South Pacific (USP) as a case study. It highlights some key challenges with ODL including cultural and linguistic diversity, inadequate educational resources, and balancing local and international needs. It also notes that while technology is important, ODL requires a holistic systems approach with leadership, planning, quality assurance, and partnership. Successful ODL implementation depends on addressing these basic factors, not just focusing on technology.
This document discusses social return on investment (SROI) analysis as an innovative framework for measuring the impact of One Health initiatives. SROI analysis is a process for understanding, measuring, and reporting on the social, environmental, and economic value created by an organization, program, or policy. It can be used prospectively during planning or retrospectively for evaluation. The principles of SROI analysis include involving stakeholders, understanding what changes, valuing what matters, only including material factors, not over-claiming results, and being transparent. An example is provided of how SROI analysis was applied to measure the impact of establishing an emergency medical system in Kenya.

This document describes a finite element model of a vibrating touch screen actuated by piezo patches for haptic feedback. The model was developed in ABAQUS to investigate different design configurations for the piezo patches and touch screen boundary conditions. The goal is to determine an optimal configuration that maximizes vibration amplitude on the screen surface while minimizing power consumption. Simulation results show that vibration amplitude varies across the screen depending on piezo patch location and orientation. Placing patches close to clamped screen edges produced higher amplitudes for a given applied charge.

The poem is about a red tomato that is begging to not be eaten by someone. In the first lines, the tomato says it wants to be eaten in a few days when it is more ripe. It then tells the person that it is very hungry and encourages eating carrots or radishes instead. The tomato questions why the person wants to eat it if other vegetables are preferable. It concludes by saying it likes the person and doesn't want to be eaten, but doesn't mind being taken home and enjoyed there.

Careers in natural resources initiative - Lisa Eadens, Colorado Alliance for ...rshimoda2014
There is great concern over who will protect, maintain and enhance our natural resources in the future. Currently, outdoor play time for kids is minimal, especially for children living in urban areas, while kids’ average “screen time” exceeds 40 hours a week. By some accounts, as many as 50% of state and federal land managers are retirement-eligible within the next five years. However, because a generation or more of children has not had a close and ongoing relationship with the outdoors, state and federal natural resource agencies are having difficulty recruiting employees who have the necessary skills, experience, education, and emotional connection to the outdoors to take over the management of public lands. Simultaneously, agencies not only need skilled candidates, they need candidates that represent the changing demographics of the state.
The Careers in Natural Resources Initiative aims to help youth make the leap from participation in an outdoor program to a sustainable career through three strategies that address different audiences along a spectrum from awareness to action.
Support Career Exploration – Most youth lack understanding of career opportunities in natural resources. To promote these opportunities and foster interest in natural resource careers, partners participated in 8th grade career fairs throughout the region and are planning a Careers in Natural Resource Experience this spring.
Develop Online Jobs Portal – Working with our partners, an online web portal that provides a single springboard to help organize and access needed information, job postings, and resources around natural resource careers was launched in the fall of 2013.
Create Career Guide – Publication of a Guide to Natural Resources Career Paths aimed at entry-level candidates is underway. The Guide will provide step-by-step assistance for youth interested in natural resource careers regarding how to apply and navigate state and federal job listings and application processes.

Transforming education through data provides 3 key points:
1. The DfE is working to address a lack of information in the education system by creating a large longitudinal dataset called LEO that matches data from education and labor market sources.
2. LEO allows the DfE to answer important questions about the benefits of education, target funding effectively, and hold institutions accountable based on outcomes.
3. Initial findings show education provides significant returns, with level 3 apprenticeships and qualifications yielding average returns of £67-88k per student and £34 of value for every £1 of government funding across all levels.
This document proposes an evaluation plan for the Girls' Empowerment through Education and Health Activity (ASPIRE) project in Malawi. ASPIRE aims to improve education and health outcomes for 125,000 adolescent girls through activities like health education, teacher training, infrastructure improvements, and community sensitization. The evaluation will assess progress toward short-term outcomes after one year and gather feedback to improve program implementation before expanding to more schools. Key evaluation questions focus on outcomes achieved, unintended impacts, participant satisfaction, and implementation challenges encountered.

1.1 The Benefits of Early Childhood EducationAccording to the Na.docxpaynetawnya
1.1 The Benefits of Early Childhood Education
According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the largest membership organization for early education professionals, there are more than 300,000 licensed or regulated early childhood programs in the United States (NAEYC, n.d.). This figure includes a variety of for-profit and nonprofit program types, such as child care centers, preschools, and family child care homes.
An early childhood care program is generally defined as an educational or child care service provided to young children, including infants through 5-year-olds and often also inclusive of older children in after-school programs. Such programs usually employ teachers or caregivers, as well as support staff such as kitchen workers or office assistants. The amount of time children spend in early childhood programs each day can vary from a few hours in a part-day preschool program to nine hours or more in a full-day child care center.
With rare exception, these programs are run by early childhood administrators. The work of early childhood administrators has a significant effect on the lives of young children and their families, because early childhood education plays an important role in the healthy development of children and sets the stage for academic achievement and future success.
Meeting the Needs of Children and Families
For many parents, the top priority in enrolling their child in an early childhood program is to find adequate child care services so they can continue to work outside the home. In the United States today, more than half of the mothers of children under age five are in the labor force (United States Department of Labor, 2008), and four out of five young children with employed mothers receive child care by someone other than their parents (Forum on Child and Family Statistics, 2010). Working parents may need flexibility in pick-up and drop-off times, some may need extended hours care, and all want care that is safe, high quality, and affordable.
Parents also enroll their children in child care or preschool programs for social and cognitive reasons. They may wish for their child to interact with other children, or they may seek to develop their child's school-readiness skills to help prepare him or her for kindergarten.
For children who are considered high risk for school failure, there are programs that provide targeted supports to help children develop language, literacy, and problem-solving skills. For example, publicly funded early childhood programs help children living in poverty who might not otherwise have access to early childhood programs prepare for kindergarten and later school success.
Positive Outcomes of High-Quality Care
The first five years of a child's life are a critical period of development. Children are learning essential cognitive, social, emotional, physical, and self-help skills necessary for success in school and in life. A growing body of research ...
Here are three suggestions for activities based on the document:
1. Research and discuss the different approaches to foreign aid for education that have been tried over the past decades, from the "productivist" approach of the 1960s-80s to the "developmentalist" approach that followed. What were the strengths and limitations of each?
2. Examine specific education aid projects mentioned, like those led by USAID in the Philippines. Identify their goals and intended outcomes. Discuss how factors outside of schools could influence whether those outcomes are achieved.

Teach First is a UK organization that aims to address educational disadvantage by recruiting exceptional graduates to teach for two years in low-income schools. It was founded in 2002 based on a recommendation from a McKinsey study. Teach First has grown significantly and now places over 1,000 teachers per year in challenging schools across several regions of the UK. In addition to teaching, participants take part in a leadership development program and many remain engaged after the two years as ambassadors working to further Teach First's mission of improving access to education. Teach First's 2012 strategy outlines plans to continue expanding placements, strengthening its leadership program, and increasing engagement of former participants as advocates for educational reform.
The document discusses the increasing importance of knowledge and higher education globally and nationally. It notes pressures on governments and universities to expand access to higher education while containing costs. This has led to policies encouraging private provision, increased student contributions, performance measures, and use of ICT to reduce delivery costs. Students now expect flexible options and personal attention. For open and distance education providers, there are challenges around research status, competition from private providers, and attracting qualified teaching staff. The document calls for a strategic review of open and distance education to determine strengths and focus, and greater collaboration among institutions.
A One-Stop Approach to Supporting the Nonacademic Needs of Community College ...April Smith
1) Community college students, especially low-income students, face high dropout rates due to both academic and non-academic challenges. Non-academic challenges include financial difficulties, food insecurity, homelessness, and lack of access to social services.
2) Single Stop aims to address this issue through a "one-stop shop" model that connects students to existing social services and benefits through screenings, applications assistance, and referrals. This helps students meet basic needs so they can focus on their studies.
3) By helping students access financial resources, handle other life challenges, and feel supported by their college, Single Stop hopes to increase persistence and completion rates. However, the impact may vary between colleges
This document summarizes an operational study conducted in eight marginalized upazilas of Sylhet Division in Bangladesh that have consistently underperformed in education and other development indicators. The study examines challenges faced in providing primary education services in wetland (haor) and tea garden areas. Major challenges identified include difficulties finding proper school infrastructure and qualified teachers, high teacher turnover, and barriers to education like seasonal work, weather, and household responsibilities that impact student attendance and dropout rates. Educational monitoring is also hindered by poor communications, limited staff training time, and heavy workloads. Recommendations focus on increasing spending on schools, teacher salaries/training, and deploying more qualified educational staff.
