Pip suffers from confusing good and bad people throughout the novel. He disregards those who love him, like Joe, who raised him, and instead cares for those who don't care for him, like Estella. When Pip first meets Estella, he begins to dislike everything from his past and takes out his frustrations on Joe due to feeling inferior in front of Estella. Though Joe loves and cares for Pip, Pip chooses Estella, who thrives on his pain, over Joe. Similarly, Pip yells at Biddy, who genuinely cares for him, showing his skewed perceptions of who treats him well.
