The Analytical Writing measure consists of two
separately timed analytical writing tasks:
Analyze an Issue task
Analyze an Argument task
14
15. STRATEGIES FOR ISSUE BASED ESSAY
WRITING
How to:
• Read the ‘issue based question’ carefully
• Draw assumptions
• Position your stand
• Support your own views on the issue (Importance of giving examples and
how many examples ideally should be written for practice)
• Present your stand (We discuss what points should be jotted down on which you
are going to write)
• Frame of your response ( How many paragraphs ideally we should write and
what content should be included in each paragraphs.
• Divide and Manage the time for each and every step
• Gain good command on language
• Follow a logical flow of ideas, and write in simple and complex sentences.
15
16. STRATEGIES FOR ARGUMENT BASED
ESSAY WRITING
First 7-8 minute should be spent on planning about the topic.
We discuss what points should be jotted down on the topic that you are going to write and
how you are going to present them
Secondly, after reading the question what assumptions can be drawn and what alternative
explanations can be given.
How to choose the best examples and how to present them.
What examples and counterexamples can be taken into consideration, and what additional
evidences might prove useful in fully and fairly evaluating the reasoning.
We discuss and write jointly with the students some sample arguments.
We give thorough feedback to students on written arguments.
What kinds of sentence we should write and how to present them in the right manner.
How to quickly review the writing assessments.
16
18. VERBAL REASONING
The GRE Verbal Reasoning section of the GRE®
revised General Test contains three types of
questions:
Reading Comprehension – More focus on Reading
the New GRE!
Text Completion
Sentence Equivalence
18
19. READING COMPREHENSION
NEW QUESTION TYPES
Multiple Choice Questions – Select One Answer
These are traditional multiple-choice questions with five answer choices, of
which you must select one
Multiple Choice Questions – Select One or More Answer
These questions provide three answer choices and ask you to select all that are
correct; one, two or all three of the answer choices may be correct. To gain credit
for these questions, you must select all the correct answers, and only those;
there is no credit for partially correct answers.
Select-in-Passage
These questions ask you to click on the sentence in the passage that meets a
certain description. To answer the question, choose one of the sentences and
click on it; clicking anywhere on a sentence will highlight it. In longer passages,
the question will usually apply to only one or two specified paragraphs,
marked by an arrow ( ); clicking on a sentence elsewhere in the passage will not
highlight it.
19
20. READING COMPREHENSION
Strategies to excel in the Reading Comprehension
First, we discuss the difficult words list and its meanings, which generally come in questions
in RC. For example Analytical, Descriptive, Hyperbolic, Critical, Reproachful, Facetious,
Equivocal, Circular, Unwarranted.
We discuss all important question types like Main idea and Prime purpose of the passage,
Descriptive Questions, Extension Questions, Inference type of questions, Explicit detail
question, Application Questions, Tone Question , Writing Technique Questions.
While reading the passage we also discuss that how to understand Compare and contrast
two positions, Show cause and effect, State a position and then give supporting evidence.
Importance of pivotal words like but, however, although, yet, despite, nevertheless,
nonetheless, except, In contrast, even though.
20
21. READING COMPREHENSION
How to make gist of each paragraph and get to the central idea of passage and how to
convert in a tree diagram.
How to find out author’s purpose and structure; and the author’s voice/tone in the passage.
Understand words and statements and increase your ability to interpret special meaning of
terms that are used,
We will make you perfect in determining the strong and weak points of an argument or
evaluate the relative importance of arguments and ideas in a passage so that you can
easily understand logical relationships between points and concepts.
We will make your perfect in drawing inferences from facts and statements question as well
How to eliminate answer choices and reach to the correct answers.
21
22. TEXT COMPLETION
New Text Completion questions test your ability to interpret, evaluate
and reason from what you've read.
Text Completion questions test this ability by omitting crucial words from
short passages, requiring you to fill them in by selecting words or
phrases.
Strategies to crack the new “Text Completion” Section
• Read the entire passage carefully
• Identify the gaps between two sentences, two paragraphs or between two ideas
that are being conveyed
• Read two lines before and after the missing sentence / missing words
• Then correctly position the missing words or statements
22
23. SENTENCE EQUIVALENCE
New Sentence Equivalence questions tests your ability to reach a conclusion, about how a sentence
should be completed while focusing on the meaning of the whole sentence.
Sentence Equivalence questions consist of a single sentence, one blank, and six answer choices. These
questions require you to select two of the answer choices. You receive no credit for partially correct
answers.
Strategies to excel in the new “Sentence Equivalence” section
You will have to Select the two answer choices that, when used to complete the sentence, fit the meaning
of the sentence as a whole and produce completed sentences that are alike in meaning.
Look for similar meaning words. For example - (slight & modest) or (original and innovative) the vs. other
3 options that sound more negative / opposite.
Pay close attention to adverbs or adjectives just before the blanks (missing words)
Do not change the meaning of the sentence

Numeric Entry Questions
25
26. QUANTITATIVE REASONING
The skills, concepts and abilities are tested in the four content areas below:
Arithmetic topics include properties and types of integers, such as divisibility,
factorization, prime numbers, remainders and odd and even integers; arithmetic
operations, exponents and radicals; and concepts such as estimation, percent,
ratio, rate, absolute value, the number line, decimal representation and
sequences of numbers.
Algebra topics include operations with exponents; factoring and simplifying
algebraic expressions; relations, functions, equations and inequalities; solving
linear and quadratic equations and inequalities; solving simultaneous equations
and inequalities; setting up equations to solve word problems; and coordinate
geometry, including slopes and intercepts of lines and graphs of functions,
equations and inequalities.
26
27. QUANTITATIVE REASONING
Geometry topics include parallel and perpendicular lines, circles,
triangles — including isosceles, equilateral and 30°-60°-90° triangles —
quadrilaterals, other polygons, congruent and similar figures, three-
dimensional figures, area, perimeter, volume, the Pythagorean theorem
and angle measurement in degrees. The ability to construct proofs is
not tested.
Data analysis topics include basic descriptive statistics, such as mean,
median, mode, range, standard deviation, interquartile range, quartiles
and percentiles; interpretation of data in tables and graphs, such as line
graphs, bar graphs, circle graphs, boxplots, scatterplots and frequency
distributions; elementary probability, such as probabilities of compound
events and independent events; random variables and probability
distributions, including normal distributions; and counting methods, such
as combinations, permutations and Venn diagrams.
27
28. STRATEGIES FOR QUANTITATIVE
COMPARISON
Questions of this type ask you to compare two quantities – Quantity A and
Quantity B – and then determine which of the following statements describes the
comparison:
Quantity A is greater.
Quantity B is greater.
The two quantities are equal.
The relationship cannot be determined from the information given.
6-Step Method for QC :
-- Compare, don’t calculate
-- Compare piece by piece
-- Make one column look like the other
-- Do the same thing to both columns
-- Pick Numbers
-- Redraw the diagrams
28
29. STRATEGIES FOR
“1 ANSWER CHOICE” TYPE OF
QUESTIONS
Strategies to beat the Multiple Choice – Select 1 Choice
type of questions
Use the fact that the answer is there.
If your answer is not one of the five answer choices given, you
should assume that your answer is incorrect and do the following:
Reread the question carefully – you may have missed an important
detail or misinterpreted some information.
Check your computations – you may have made a mistake, such as
mis-keying a number on the calculator.
Re-evaluate your solution method – you may have a flaw in your
reasoning.
29
30. STRATEGIES FOR
“1 ANSWER CHOICE” TYPE OF
QUESTIONS
Examine the answer choices.
In some questions you are asked explicitly which of the choices has a certain property.
You may have to consider each choice separately or you may be able to see a
relationship between the choices that will help you find the answer more quickly.
In other questions, it may be helpful to work backward from the choices, say, by
substituting the choices in an equation or inequality to see which one works.
However, be careful, as that method may take more time than using reasoning.
For questions that require approximations, scan the answer choices to see
how close an approximation is needed.
In other questions, too, it may be helpful to scan the choices briefly before solving the
problem to get a better sense of what the question is asking. If computations are
involved in the solution, it may be necessary to carry out all computations exactly and
round only your final answer in order to get the required degree of accuracy.
In other questions, you may find that estimation is sufficient and will help you avoid
spending time on long computations.
30
31. STRATEGIES FOR
NEW “1 OR MORE ANSWER” TYPE
Strategies to master the new “1 or More Answer” type of Questions
Note whether you are asked to indicate a specific number of answer
choices or all choices that apply. In the latter case, be sure to consider all of
the choices, determine which ones are correct, and select all of those and only
those choices. Note that there may be only one correct choice.
In some questions that involve inequalities that limit the possible values of
the answer choices, it may be efficient to determine the least and/or the
greatest possible value. Knowing the least and/or greatest possible value may
enable you to quickly determine all of the choices that are correct.
Avoid lengthy calculations by recognizing and continuing numerical
patterns.
31
32. STRATEGIES FOR
NEW NUMERIC ENTRY TYPE OF
QUESTIONS
Questions of this type ask you either to enter your answer as an integer or a decimal in a single answer
box or to enter it as a fraction in two separate boxes — one for the numerator and one for the
denominator.
Make sure you answer the question that is asked.
Since there are no answer choices to guide you, read the question carefully and make sure you provide
the type of answer required.
Sometimes there will be labels before or after the answer box to indicate the appropriate type of answer.
Pay special attention to units such as feet or miles, to orders of magnitude such as millions or billions, and
to presents as compared with decimals.
If you are asked to round your answer, make sure you round to the required degree of accuracy.
For example, if an answer of 46.7 is to be rounded to the nearest integer, you need to enter the number
47.
If your solution strategy involves intermediate computations, you should carry out all computations exactly
and round only your final answer in order to get the required degree of accuracy. If no rounding
instructions are given, enter the exact answer.
32
Examine your answer to see if it is reasonable with respect to the information
given. You may want to use estimation or another solution path to double-check your
answer.
