Relationships Matter: Using Connected Data for Better Machine LearningNeo4j
Relationships are highly predictive of behavior, yet most data science models overlook this information because it's difficult to extract network structure for use in machine learning (ML).
With graphs, relationships are embedded in the data itself, making it practical to add these predictive capabilities to your existing practices.
That’s why we’re presenting and demoing the use of graph-native ML to make breakthrough predictions. This will cover:
- Different approaches to graph feature engineering, from queries and algorithms to embeddings
- How ML techniques leverage everything from classical network science to deep learning and graph convolutional neural networks
- How to generate representations of your graph using graph embeddings, create ML models for link prediction or node classification, and apply these models to add missing information to an existing graph/incoming data
- Why no-code visualization and prototyping is important

A comparison of relational and graph model theories, with an eye towards DataStax's implementation of Graph. Note: I'm working on a concise, formal mathematical definition of relational, based on Codd's 1970 paper. (Thanks to Artem Chebotko for suggesting this.)
A Connections-first Approach to Supply Chain OptimizationNeo4j
Supply chain optimization is an unusual balancing act that requires finesse, skill and timely data. Every supply chain’s the key questions to be answered are:
What to Buy? -- what are the factors in determining your optimal product mix and set of suppliers.
How much to Buy? -- what are the most and least popular items at any given time interval
When to Buy? -- long lags in delivery timing may tax limit your flexibility and influence your inventory management practices.
We will illustrate an API-based solution that utilizes a Graph database platform to add demonstrable value to Supply Planning.

Where the Warehouse Ends: A New Age of Information AccessInside Analysis
The Briefing Room with Barry Devlin and Composite Software
Live Webcast May 21, 2013
All good things must come to an end, and even though the data warehouse will remain a prominent force in the information age, the handwriting is all over the enterprise: the center of gravity is moving. Whether due to Big Data or real-time demands, Cloud computing or globalization, today's leading organizations have analytical needs that the warehouse simply cannot accommodate. That's why data virtualization continues to attract attention.
Register for this episode of The Briefing Room to hear veteran Analyst Barry Devlin explain why the traditional model for data warehousing is being outmoded by a range of more flexible methods for accessing and analyzing information assets. He'll be briefed by David Besemer of Composite Software who will discuss how his company's data virtualization platform can be used to provide access to all manner of information sources, including data warehouses, Big Data silos, as well as partner and public data sources on demand.

DataOps: Nine steps to transform your data science impact Strata London May 18Harvinder Atwal
According to Forrester Research, only 22% of companies are currently seeing a significant return from data science expenditures. Most data science implementations are high-cost IT projects, local applications that are not built to scale for production workflows, or laptop decision support projects that never impact customers. Despite this high failure rate, we keep hearing the same mantra and solutions over and over again. Everybody talks about how to create models, but not many people talk about getting them into production where they can impact customers.
Harvinder Atwal offers an entertaining and practical introduction to DataOps, a new and independent approach to delivering data science value at scale, used at companies like Facebook, Uber, LinkedIn, Twitter, and eBay. The key to adding value through DataOps is to adapt and borrow principles from Agile, Lean, and DevOps. However, DataOps is not just about shipping working machine learning models; it starts with better alignment of data science with the rest of the organization and its goals. Harvinder shares experience-based solutions for increasing your velocity of value creation, including Agile prioritization and collaboration, new operational processes for an end-to-end data lifecycle, developer principles for data scientists, cloud solution architectures to reduce data friction, self-service tools giving data scientists freedom from bottlenecks, and more. The DataOps methodology will enable you to eliminate daily barriers, putting your data scientists in control of delivering ever-faster cutting-edge innovation for your organization and customers.

Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.
