Grammar refers to everything a person needs to know to be a fluent speaker of a language. It is something to be discovered and described rather than invented or enforced. A linguist views grammar as the complete set of rules needed to produce all regular patterns in a given language. There are two types of rules - prescriptive rules that define a standard form of the language, and descriptive rules that describe grammar as it is used by speakers.
