Grade 8: Math Course 3                STUDENT VERSION
Ch 9-1 BConvert Temperatures
Prerequisite Content:
Solve equations using the order of operations.
Solve and graph one- and two-step equations in one variable.
Use exponents and square roots.
Solve for any variable in a literal equation (previous lesson).
Learning Goal:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to convert temperatures
between the Fahrenheit and Celsius scales.

Score 4.0   In addition to Score 3.0 performance, in-depth inferences and
            applications that go beyond what was taught, such as
            I know that whether I say the current temperature is 0°C or 32°F, the
            temperature is the same and these are just two different ways to
            describe the same amount of cold needed to freeze water. I
            understand this no matter which set of degrees are given.
            Score 3.5 I understand how cold or warm the weather is whether
                         someone describes the temperature to me using the
                         Fahrenheit scale or the Celsius scale.
Score 3.0   While engaged in solving conversion tasks from Celsius to
            Fahrenheit and Fahrenheit to Celsius scales, the student
            demonstrates an ability to
            without help, solve word problems to convert temperatures from
            Fahrenheit to Celsius or Celsius to Fahrenheit using the correct
            formula.
            C = (F – 32) ÷ 1.8
            F = (C × 1.8) + 32
            The student exhibits no major errors or omissions.
            Score 2.5 I can, without help, solve a Fahrenheit/Celsius conversion
                         problem using the appropriate formula and get the right
                         answer.
                         C = (F – 32) ÷ 1.8
                         F = (C × 1.8) + 32
Score 2.0   No major errors or omissions regarding the simpler details and
            processes, such as
I don’t need any help to choose the correct formula, and I don’t need
            help to begin solving the problem. Sometimes, I make mistakes when
            I am trying to multiply or divide by fractions or decimals.
            However, the student exhibits major errors or omissions with Score
            3.0 elements.
            Score 1.5 I can find the correct answer using the correct formula if
                        someone is there to help me, but without help I make
                        mistakes.
                        C = (F – 32) ÷ 1.8
                        F = (C × 1.8) + 32
Score 1.0   With help, a partial understanding of some of the Score 2.0
            elements and some of the Score 3.0 elements.
            If someone helps me, I can choose the correct formula to use, but
            without help, I get mixed up and often choose the wrong formula to
            use.
            Score 0.5 I know the formulas to solve temperature conversion
                        problems are on the FCAT reference sheet. I know where
                        to find them; but I don’t know which formula to use or
                        how to use them. I need help.
Score 0.0   Even with help, no understanding or skill demonstrated.

            remains the same regardless of whether a Fahrenheit or Celsius scale
            is usedto measure the temperature, and can understand the
            correlation between the two scales. For example, 0°C and 32°F are
            two ways to describe the same amount of cold needed to freeze
            water.
            Score 3.5 The student, without help, can correctly identify what
                         type of weather is associated with any degrees on both
                         the Fahrenheit and Celsius scales, but may not
                         understand how the two scales are correlated.
Score 3.0   While engaged in solving conversion tasks from Celsius to
            Fahrenheit and Fahrenheit to Celsius scales, the student
            demonstrates an ability to
            without help,correctly solve the problem when it is presented in a
            word problem format, using the appropriate formula.
            C = (F – 32) ÷ 1.8
            F = (C × 1.8) + 32
            The student exhibits no major errors or omissions.
            Score 2.5 The student can, without help,correctly solve a
                         Fahrenheit/Celsius conversion problem using the
                         appropriate formula.
                         C = (F – 32) ÷ 1.8

Score 2.0   No major errors or omissions regarding the simpler details and
            processes, such as
            without help, the student can correctly identify the appropriate
            conversion formula needed to solve the problem,
            and without help, the student can begin to solve a temperature
            conversion task, but will make a common error(s) preventing a
            correct solution, such as incorrectly solving problems when decimals
            or fractions are used.
            However, the student exhibits major errors or omissions with Score
            3.0 elements.
            Score 1.5 The student with help can solve a temperature conversion
                        problem using the correct formula.
                        C = (F – 32) ÷ 1.8
                        F = (C × 1.8) + 32
Score 1.0   With help, a partial understanding of some of the Score 2.0
            elements and some of the Score 3.0 elements.
            The student, with help, can identify the correct temperature
            conversion formula to select to solve a problem for the Celsius or the
            Fahrenheit scale.
            Score 0.5 The student can find the formulas on the FCAT reference
                        sheet, but cannot determine the correct formula to use.
Score 0.0   Even with help, no understanding or skill demonstrated.

C = (F – 32) ÷ 1.8 F = (C × 1.8) + 32 The student exhibits no major errors or omissions. Score 2.5 I can, without help, solve a Fahrenheit/Celsius conversion problem using the appropriate formula and get the right answer. C = (F – 32) ÷ 1.8 F = (C × 1.8) + 32 Score 2.0 No major errors or omissions regarding the simpler details and processes, such as

Sometimes, I make mistakes when I am trying to multiply or divide by fractions or decimals. However, the student exhibits major errors or omissions with Score 3.0 elements. C = (F – 32) ÷ 1.8 F = (C × 1.8) + 32 Score 1.0 With help, a partial understanding of some of the Score 2.0 elements and some of the Score 3.0 elements. The student, with help, can identify the correct temperature conversion formula to select to solve a problem for the Celsius or the Fahrenheit scale.
