popular stringed
instruments to the
Philippines in 1800's.
Rondalla
This comes from the Spanish word “Ronda”
which means serenade During the Spanish time,
this was formerly called as “comparza”. The
rondalla originated in Medieval Spain, particularly
in Valencia, Catalunya, Aragon, and Murcia.
Rondalla
Rondalla is a grouped of stringed instuments
played with PLECTRUM or PICK.
This also plays simple folk songs, modern and
contemporary music, as well as Filipino and
foreign classical music.

Octavina
Bajo de uñas or Double Bass
A pear-shaped stringed instrument made
of wood with round sound hole. it has six
sets of strings with first three sets
having three string each; the fourth and
fifth having two strings each; and sixth
set having one string. This plays the
melody and the counterpart in the group.
Bandurria
Similar appearance to the Bandurria but a
little bigger with a longer neck and with
two F sound holes. It usually plays the
lower notes in the accompaniments and in
unison with the bass. Here in the
Philippines, it has 14 strings.
Laud
Similar in appearance to a guitar with round
sound hole but with shorter neck. It has 14
strings- first 3 sets with 3 strings, 4th and
5th with two strings, and last set with 1
string. Tuned like bandurria and Laud except
that it is one octave lower than bandurria.
Octavina
Larger than the Octavina with a round sound
hole too. It has six strings and a long
fretted neck. It is played by plucking or
strumming with the fingers of with plectrum
or pick. This provide the permanent rhythm
for the group using the chords.
Guitar
Shaped like a violin with two F sound
holes. It has 4 strings and is the
largest instrument in the group. It
provides the low and loud rhythm in
rondalla.
Bajo de uñas or Double Bass
Today, a number of percussion instruments, such as the Snare
Drums, Bass Drum, and Cymbals are also played in the Rondalla.
