This document discusses ways to avoid anxiety by focusing on God rather than worldly concerns. It notes that anxiety stems from seeking security in the world and focusing on material comforts rather than God's kingdom. However, God cares for his creation, like the birds and flowers, and will provide for his people. The recommended cure for anxiety is to make seeking God's kingdom and righteousness the primary goal in life, trusting that God will then provide earthly necessities. Living this way and focusing on each day brings peace instead of worrying about tomorrow.

What Jesus Said about God’s Provision Adapted from the series, “Jesus Said” by Michael Wiley http://www.sermoncentral.com/sermons/what-jesus-said-about-gods-provision-michael-wiley-sermon-on-jesus-christ-131036.asp
Dear sisters and brothers,
Do you trust your God? Accumulating... and accumulating and setting aside so many things for the far distant future and yet you have no joy is a sign of distrust.
Fr. Cielo
What are some things about which you typically worry? Why do you think you worry about these things? Are you concerned about your anxiety and worrying? Why? According to Jesus, why is it unnecessary for us to worry about our physical and material needs? (25-30) If God promises to feed the close of his children, then why are so many in the world starving and ill-clad? (41-45) How do we practically obey Christ’s command to “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness”? (33) Explain Christ's promise when we obey this command.
Why does evil seem to prosper and good suffer? God showers many blessings on the faithful and unfaithful alike. This may even be a catalyst for development of the good.
The Book of Joshua is the sixth book in the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament, and is the first book of the Deuteronomistic history, the story of Israel from the conquest of Canaan to the Babylonian exile.
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

5. AVERTING ANXIETY
BIBLE PASSAGES
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your
life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about
your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than
food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the
birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather
into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of
you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span
of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing?
Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they
neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in
all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Matt 6
6. AVERTING ANXIETY
BIBLE PASSAGES
30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which
today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will
he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we
eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’
32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your
heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But
seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness,
and all these things will be added to you.
34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for
tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day
is its own trouble. Matt 6
7. CAUSES OF ANXIETY
31 Therefore do not be anxious,
saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or
‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What
shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles
seek after all these things, and
your heavenly Father knows that
you need them all.
Meaning[1]:
1. A disquieting, tormenting
thought (Lack of peace)
2. A distrustful, unbelieving
thought (Lack of trust)
8. CAUSES OF ANXIETY
SECURITY IN THE WORLD
19 “Do not lay up for
yourselves treasures
on earth, where moth
and rust destroy and
where thieves break in
and steal, Matt 6
9. CAUSES FOR ANXIETY
SEEKING THESE THINGS
“Seek” carries the
idea of:
• concentrating on
• highest priority
• burning attention
• center of your
life[2]
10. CAUSES FOR ANXIETY
SEEKING THESE THINGS
Who seeks these things?
(Matt 6:32)
Comforts (Matt 8:19-20)
Family (21,22),
Wealth (19:21,22)
Status (20:20,21)
11. COMMENDED CARES
REDIRECT ANXIETY
A positive twist to anxiety or
care:
• Virtuous woman’s
stewardship - Prov. 27:23
• Paul’s care of the churches
- 2 Cor. 11:28
• Timothy’s care for the state
of souls - Phil. 2:20.
12. CONSIDER CREATION
THE BIRDS
26 Look at the birds of the
air: they neither sow nor
reap nor gather into barns,
and yet your heavenly
Father feeds them. Are you
not of more value than
they? 27 And which of you
by being anxious can add a
single hour to his span of
life?
13. CONSIDER CREATION
THE LILIES
28 And why are you
anxious about clothing?
Consider the lilies of the
field, how they grow:
they neither toil nor
spin, 29 yet I tell you,
even Solomon in all
his glory was not
arrayed like one of
these.
14. CONSIDER CREATION
THE GRASS
30 But if God so clothes
the grass of the field,
which today is alive and
tomorrow is thrown into
the oven, will he not
much more clothe
you, O you of little
faith?
15. CURE FOR ANXIETY
SECURITY IN GOD
31 Therefore do not be anxious,
saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or
‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What
shall we wear?’ 32 For the
Gentiles seek after all these
things, and your heavenly
Father knows that you need
them all.
Cf. Matt 6:20
• Grow larger than those who
don’t know God
• Know that your Father knows
16. CURE FOR ANXIETY
SEEKING FIRST GOD’S KINGDOM
33 But seek first the
kingdom of God…
Prioritize over comfort
zone, family, wealth,
status:
• His Kingdom on Earth
(Matt 13)
• His Eternal Kingdom
(Matt 19:27-30)
17. CURE FOR ANXIETY
SEEKING HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS
and his
righteousness…
Prioritize holiness
over happiness
18. CURE FOR ANXIETY
SEEKING HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS
“all these things will be
added to you.”
How does comfort zone,
family, wealth, status get
added?
• In this world?
• In the next? (Matt 19:27-
29)
19. ..AND ALL THESE
THINGS WILL BE ADDED
Drive to
succeed for
God exceeds
any other drive
in the world.
Eg. Eric Liddle vs. Harold
Abrahams
Michael Phelps
20. CURE FOR ANXIETY
SEEKING TO LIVE FOR TODAY
34 “Therefore do not be anxious
about tomorrow, for tomorrow will
be anxious for itself. Sufficient for
the day is its own trouble.
..Is not life more than food, and the
body more than clothing? V 25
Value life
Every minute is a gift.
There is not much time left.

Commended Cares
Consider Creation
The sparrows
The lilies
The grass
Cure for anxiety
Security in God
Seeking First God’s Kingdom
Seeking God’s Righteousness
Seeking to live for today
22. DISCUSSION
1. She appears to be seeking gain in the “kingdom of God”.
What was wrong in James and John’s mother’s attitude
(Matt 20:20-28)?
2. Why does anxiety control us and peace elude us? How
do we overcome it? (Phil 4:6,7)
3. How do we gain the peace and trust required in trying
situations?
4. What practical steps can we personally take to centre our
lives around God and redirect anxiety?
23. TIPS FOR STRESS
AVERSION
1. Reduce Stress: Never bite of more than you can chew
2. Redirect Stress: Focus on Kingdom goals, God will take
your load on earthly ones.
3. Remove Stress: Make time for things you enjoy- Retail
therapy (shopping), etc.
4. Release Stress: When people don’t change, accept it and
let it go. Just love them
Take no thought, me merimnate—Be not in care. As against hypocrisy, so against worldly cares, the caution is thrice repeated, and yet no vain repetition: precept must be upon precept, and line upon line, to the same purport, and all little enough; it is a sin which doth so easily beset us. It intimates how pleasing it is to Christ, and of how much concern it is to ourselves, that we should live without carefulness. It is the repeated command of the Lord Jesus to his disciples, that they should not divide and pull in pieces their own minds with care about the world. There is a thought concerning the things of this life, which is not only lawful, but duty, such as is commended in the virtuous woman. See Prov. 27:23. The word is used concerning Paul’s care of the churches, and Timothy’s care for the state of souls, 2 Cor. 11:28; Phil. 2:20.
But the thought here forbidden is, 1. A disquieting, tormenting thought, which hurries the mind hither and thither, and hangs it in suspense; which disturbs our joy in God, and is a damp upon our hope in him; which breaks the sleep, and hinders our enjoyment of ourselves, of our friends, and of what God has given us. 2. A distrustful, unbelieving thought.
Matthew Henry’s commentary
This verse picks up the same word for “seek” as in the last verse. “Seek” carries the idea of concentrating on, making the kingdom one’s highest priority. “Seek” is in the imperative mood and calls for burning attention to the kingdom. The grammar also indicates a constant seeking. The idea is to “Make the kingdom the center of your life.” [2]

Anxiety changes nothing.
What a contrast!! Romans 13:14 clothe yourself with Jesus.
God knows even before we ask. Even if we ask only for Kingdom related requests, he will answer other requests.
27 Then Peter said in reply, “See, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?” 28 Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life. 30 But many who are first will be last, and the last first. Answer: Comfort zone – Secure in God, Family – God’s family, wealth – permanent; status – Heirs of the Kingdom. Rest is bonus.
Eric Liddle. God wants me to go to China. But “He also made me fast and when I run I feel His pleasure”
Michael Phelps (read purpose driven life) won individual medals more than 52 countries put together.
Never take life for granted. Life is God’s breath in us. When a person is critical we thank God for every extra lease. We need to thank God equally and more when we are healthy. It is an equal miracle.
See our situation as God sees it.
Understand God’s “protective love” that works through pain.
