2. What it does not mean
3. Need for Judgement
4. Why we should not
judge
5. Discernment vs.
Judgement
6. To save not to judge
7. Discussion
4. OBJECTIVES
• To have a wise
approach in our
judgement
• To know the
difference between
discernment and
criticism
• To edify others
without
discrimination
• To evaluate
ourselves before
evaluating others
5. WHAT IT DOES NOT
MEAN
Judging not forbidden in the absolute sense of the
word - Jn. 7:24
John Stott reminds us that “our Lord’s injunction
to ‘judge not’ cannot be understood as a command
to suspend our critical faculties in relation to other
people, to turn a blind eye to their faults
(pretending not to notice them), to eschew all
criticism and to refuse to discern between truth
and error, goodness and evil”
6. NEED FOR
JUDGEMENT
So that people are
accountable for their
actions – 1 Co.11:31
So that we can discern
between right and
wrong - 2 Th. 5:21-22
Spiritual matters by
Spiritual authority – 1
Co. 6:4
Parents have the
responsibility to
control children – 1
Tim. 3:4
7. WHY WE SHOULD NOT
JUDGE
A. Because our
Judgment of
Others Will Lead to
Similar Judgment
B. Because You
Could be Guilty of
Hypocrisy
C. Because Our
Judgment Is Often
Prone To Error
9. TO JUDGE OR NOT TO
JUDGE
Don’t judge:
You will be judged
(Matt 7)
With same measure
(Matt 7)
There is only one
law giver and judge
(Js 4:12)
God is going to help
them stand (Rom
14:4)
Grey areas (Rom 14)
10. TO JUDGE OR NOT TO
JUDGE
Judge (Discern):
Ask God for wisdom (Js1:5)
To prevent court cases before ungodly (some will judge angels)
(1 Cor 6:1-6)
To help make people stand as God does (edification) (Rom 14:4)
To defend and protect the defenceless (Lev 19:15)
To win people for Christ (1 Cor 9:22)
As a group of believers, preferrably, (Matt 18:15-17) to
• Remove evil in your midst (1 Cor 5:13)
• Identify dogs and swine (to protect “pearls of wisdom”) – Matt 7,
Phil 3:2
• Identify clear biblical violations (Rom 14)
11. JESUS CAME TO
SAVE, NOT JUDGE
Discern..
"I am sending you out like sheep
among wolves. Therefore be as
shrewd as snakes and as innocent
as doves. Matt 10:16
Don’t Judge
46 I have come into the world as
light, so that whoever believes in
me may not remain in darkness.
47 If anyone hears my words and
does not keep them, I do not judge
him; for I did not come to judge
the world but to save the world.
John 12, John 3:17
12. DISCUSSION
What is the best practical
approach to judging or not
judging others?
What are the specific areas
where we are more prone to
judge others?
Am I guilty of having a double
standard toward another
brother or sister in Christ?
Do I try to impose my views on
fellow believers ? What’s the
best way to handle difference
of opinion.
Editor's Notes
Matthew 7:1-5
1 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. 3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
Luke 6:37-42
37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” 39 He also told them this parable: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher. 41 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
John 8:1-8
1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” 6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
Luke 6:31-36

31 Do to others as you would have them do to you. 32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
James 4:11-12

11 Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. 12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?
Romans 2:1-3

1 You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. 2 Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. 3 So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment?
Romans 14:1-13

1 Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters. 2 One person’s faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. 3 The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them. 4 Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand. 5 One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind. 6 Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord. Whoever eats meat does so to the Lord, for they give thanks to God; and whoever abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7 For none of us lives for ourselves alone, and none of us dies for ourselves alone. 8 If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. 9 For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living. 10 You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister ? Or why do you treat them with contempt? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat. 11 It is written: “ ‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will acknowledge God.’ ” 12 So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God. 13 Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.

Romans 12:16-18

16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. 17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

Galatians 6:1-6
Chapter Parallel Compare
1 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. 2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. 3 If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. 4 Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, 5 for each one should carry their own load. 6 Nevertheless, the one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor.
1 Corinthians 6:1-6
Chapter Parallel Compare
1 If any of you has a dispute with another, do you dare to take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the Lord’s people? 2 Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? 3 Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! 4 Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, do you ask for a ruling from those whose way of life is scorned in the church? 5 I say this to shame you. Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers? 6 But instead, one brother takes another to court—and this in front of unbelievers!

14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

“When seeking to help others, we must exercise care to discern their spiritual appetites and do what would be appreciated and beneficial. We need to test the waters, so to speak. Ask a question in a non-threatening way to see if they might be open to discussion. “Would you be interested in what the Bible has to say about astrology?” We do this because one should never entrust holy things (what is sacred) to unholy people (dogs; cf. “dogs” inPhil. 3:2) or throw ... pearls to pigs. Dogs and pigs were despised in those days. This is one of the reasons the Lord spoke in parables. He did so to hide truth from the indifferent and to reveal it to those who were hungry and prepared.” Bible.org
