There is an increasing demand in the automation and motion control industries for a localized motion control solution that can coordinate motion between multiple remote components.
Previously, field bus protocols such as Modbus or Ethernet have been implemented to address this demand. Although successful in moving data across automation networks, these protocols lacked the real time performance necessary for a distributed motion control system.

Digital Substation is an essential part of every electrical network. It is also a base ground for modern Smart Grid technologies. More than 4000 of IEC 61850 compatible substations operated in Europe, 20 000+ worldwide, each of the comprising communication and flow of gigawatts of electrical current between large power plants (thermoelectrical, hydroelectrical or even nuclear) and their respective consumers. Such consumers include cities, industrial objects and power plants themselves. During this talk we will focus on security analysis results of key Digital Substation component - Relay Protection Terminals. Protective relays are devices for detection of electrical faults. When such fault is detected relay device designed to trip a circuit breaker. Without them problems like over-current, over-voltage, reverse power flow, over-frequency, and under-frequency can lead to colorful and impressive pictures of giant electric arcs accompanied by bunch of sparks with total blackouts as a result.
Nowadays protective relays became digital devices with network access through which operators can access different services like self-testing, statistics, logs and others. More of it, electrical lines are also combined with fiber-optic lines for communications. Electrical part of such lines need minimal traffic, but protection against surges. So such lines can be leased to different organizations, exposing great target for attacker. All of services inside such networks are available through different industrial protocols like IEC 61850 (MMS, GOOSE), IEC104 and Modbus, a not very industrial protocols HTTP, FTP, SSH and everybody’s favorite proprietary protocols. We will show how to dig very deep inside Relay Protection Terminal and how to abuse numerous weaknesses and vulnerabilities inside.

First OPC UA Server for Industrial Automation Supporting both Push and Pull Communication
Moxa has pioneered the concept of “active type” OPC software in the automation industry. The patented MX-
AOPC UA Server offers both polling and non-polling architectures alongside the standard OPC UA protocol,
giving users the alternative of pull or push-based communication from Moxa’s devices. With push technology,
I/O status is updated to the MX-AOPC UA Server only when there is an I/O status change, a pre-configured
interval is reached, or when a request is issued by a user. This application of push technology cuts metadata
overhead, resulting in faster I/O response times and more accurate data collection than traditional pull-based
architectures. With Moxa’s “active technology” advantage, users can now instantly receive alarms and real time
updates, allowing for timely risk response.

Efficient Database Uploads
With most remote data acquisition systems, during daily operations additional human resources
are needed to collect data manually from remote storage devices for loading into a database.
Even with RTUs remotely collecting data over the network, software must be developed to handle
the task of converting and uploading these data logs. Moxa’s MX-AOPC UA Logger not only
makes real-time data collection much easier, it also simplifies the conversion of historical data
into database-ready formats. MX-AOPC UA Logger interacts directly with our MX-AOPC UA
Server, working as a bridge between field data and stored databases or spreadsheets.
Furthermore, the MX-AOPC client converts and uploads data logs to the central database. The
MX-AOPC
UA Logger can collate tags from individual Moxa RTUs or remote I/O devices into the same
database or spreadsheet, freeing users from the need to manipulate data after processing.
