Utilizing resources such as the Maryland study called “The future of the MLS”, the presenters will make the case for incorporation of skills related to taking risks and embracing innovation into the education process, both inside and outside the classroom.
During the Reimagine session at the 2022 Bonner Fall Network Meeting, we focused on bigger challenges in higher education (like enrollment, cost, etc.) and how community engagement programs like the Bonner Cohort model offer solution. We shared two theories of change (Diffusion of Innovations and Three Horizons) that might provide perspective for our shared work. Facilitated by Ariane Hoy and Paul Schadewald, Senior Project Manager at Bringing Theory to Practice, a partner to the Bonner Foundation.

Education reform has been piecemeal and haphazard rather than focused and strategic and those responsible for policy making have failed to engage key stakeholders - learners, parents and practitioners.
In this Presentation Tony Breslin will lead us in a discussion around the need to transform education rather than make inadequate piecemeal reforms.
Why do we need to transform education?
Our Educational system was built for a different age: where deference defined relationships between young and old and teacher and learner, where society and its institutions offered a degree of social stability (albeit, one that was often parochial and restrictive) that the post modern era cannot match, where the drivers of change were predictable and less dynamic than forces such as globalization and the information revolution are today.
Tony believe we need to transform the way we ‘do’ education policymaking, by moving, in the language of the web, to user-generated approaches that embrace the perspective of the learner, the parent, the employer, the educational professional.
This Presentation is one of several activities we will hold this year around education and the need for there to be a great debate about educational purpose and what we mean by an ‘educated’ individual, whatever their ability or background.

Close your eyes for a second and think of something that happened over the last 20 years and you would have never expected to occur. Be it the pandemic, smart phones or something else, the truth is that the future likes to surprise us. Our world is in a perpetual state of change. There are always multiple versions of the future—some are assumptions, others hopes and fears. To prepare, we have to consider not only the changes that appear most probable, but also the ones that we aren’t expecting. Inspired by the ground-breaking 2001 Schooling for Tomorrow scenarios, this book provides a set of scenarios on the future of schooling, showing not a single path into the future, but many. Using these scenarios can help us identify the opportunities and challenges that these futures could hold for schooling and education more broadly. We can then use those ideas to help us better prepare and act now. Whether parents or students, teachers or educational leaders, researchers or policy makers, this book has been written for all those who want to think about futures that haven’t occurred to play their part in shaping the future that will.
Everywhere in Education we see curriculum change and renewal, change responding to external policy, responding to our desire to refresh our Education programmes and sometimes responding to internal institutional requirements but as academics working in Education departments we always seek to develop our curricula by being informed by what we know about effective learning

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
