I would write this essay with arguments for atheism but that would be counter productive as the
entire point of theism is that it is suggesting the existence of a deity and therefore it is a theist s
burden to provide evidence and/or proof of the deity s existence. Presented in this essay are four of
some of the most commonly used arguments for theism (not including arguments that rely purely
on faith) and rebuttals to each argument.
Firstly I will introduce a very popular argument for theism is that there can not be a causeless
cause; someone must have caused the universe to come into existence. Of course the natural
response to this is to ask; who caused God to come into existence? This argument is obviously
internally inconsistent.
Next I will put forth an argument for theism known as the Argument from Design . This common
argument suggests that complex things such as watches and televisions are created by
intelligent people. Surely the intricacy of life spawning from simple DNA, as well as the other
examples of complexity in the universe also imply the influence of an intelligence? A rebuttal to
this argument would be that god is certainly complex, so who created him? If one says that he
has always existed, then why can t one instead say that the universe (and life) have always
