Gonzalo reflects on his family's experience immigrating to the United States from Guatemala. His father's English worsened as he isolated himself at work, while Gonzalo learned English quickly at school. Their uncle Tío Juan, the oldest man in his village, became like a baby in the US unable to communicate or understand his new environment. However, when Tío Juan discovers a community garden, he regains his identity and purpose as a farmer by helping plant and care for seeds.
