UNVEILING THE HIDDEN STRUGGLES: PAVING THE
PATH FOR ELDERLY EMPOWERMENT
INTRODUCTION
Population of India is ageing with each passing day. In 1961 it rose
from 5.6% to 8.6% in 2011. The projection is expected to rise by
12.4% by the end of 2026. By 2050, India would be in a similar
position as that of a developed world.
The Life Expectancy of India has also been on the rise which was 62.5
in 2000 and rose to 68.3 in 2015.
On the contrary the old age dependency ratio is seen to be higher for
some states like Punjab, Kerala and Himachal Pradesh where one
elderly was seen to be dependent on 3 workers.
Research shows that low fertility states account for around 50% of the
elderly population.
From the demographics, 74% of the elderly men and 41% of the
elderly women claim of receiving some personal income, but
majority fall under the low-income group. It is seen around 43% of
the elderly receive no income, 22% receive less than Rs/- 12000, 21%
of them receive between Rs/- 12000 – Rs/- 50000 and around 14% of
them receive more than Rs/- 50000.

SOCIAL ISOLATION
According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNPF) and Help Age
India, the population of aged parents is expected to reach 173 million by
the end of 2026.
Parallel to their growth, problems are also increasing in the changing
cultural environment and social isolation is the most terrifying aspects.
Main causes are stress and depression, caused by living alone or with
spouse. Poverty and Distress are also the major causes, apart from these
melancholy, lack of income security and access to quality healthcare makes
life vulnerable and fragile.
50% of the aged parents are said to live a miserable life, associated without
any care or support from their children or relatives. They become the
victims of negativity and frustration, and give up all hopes and courage.
The aged parents can be made to live a peaceful life by making them
connected to vibrant communities and also by fin ding out innovative ways
to include them in social events.
FINANCIAL INSECURITY
Overpriced Medication, that is a major challenge for the aged parents. This
includes even those with health insurance that covers a major portion of the
prescription costs.
Due to decreased income and limited financial assistance, debt can be a
great deal of stress for an aged parent.
The cost of home maintenance may turn out to be a costly affair for the aged
parents.
It is a vey common factor for the adults to be targeted by Financial
Scammers, for which they should never allow strangers in his or her home.
For this it is necessary to provide them with facilities of high quality living
with proper assistance where they would feel safe.
Reduced Income is another factor that puts the aged parents in Financial
Jeopardy.

GENDER AND AGE DISCRIMINATION
In India, according to the responses given by 86.13 respondents, health of
the elderly women is neglected due to gender bias. With respect to 43063
older parents, it is estimated that around 22549 elderly women are not
taken proper care of.
Specially, it is seen that around half of the respondents claimed that there
is no such link between marginalization of older women and gender
discrimination.
A recent survey in Delhi claimed that every elderly women becomes the
victim of marginalization and isolation even in old age due to gender and
age discrimination.
Among this, elderly women face the maximum age discrimination, elder
abuse and mistreatment and this is mainly due to lack of awareness and
access to basic rights.
Discrimination is often faced in the forms of lack of adaptability to new
ideas, inventions and even the orthodox lifestyle that they live. They face
social exclusions and continuously become the victim of ignorance.
HEALTHCARE CHALLENGES OF THE
AGED PARENTS
An analysis of the morbidity patterns by age shows that aged parents
suffer from a great burden of ailments including chronic diseases.
It is seen that population above 60 years of age, 10% suffer from
impaired physical mobility and other 10% get hospitalized which
rises with the increasing age. Out of the population for over 70 years
of age, more than 50% suffer from most chronic conditions.
Multiple chronic illness, frequent acute illnesses including deficits of
vision and hearing are the major health and functional problems of
the old aged parents.
Among all forms of healthcare access available in India, elderly
parents in India face huge challenges including limited healthcare
facilities.
Financial Constraints often hinder the access of elderly parents to
certain healthcare services , such as medical expenses and a
significant portion of the elderly population lack adequate health
insurance coverage.
CAREGIVING BURDEN
22% of the caregivers have reported that their health have gotten worse
as a result of caregiving. Caring For Chronic conditions seem to cause
the maximum amount of emotional stress.
Most of the family caregivers are mainly unpaid and this is the result
they start to feel some financial strain, especially when caregiving takes
away from their paying job.
Lack of sleep is one of the biggest issue for a family caregiver. Sleep
Deprivation takes on a huge toll on a caregiver who is already being
exhausted from both the ends.
A family caregiver faces high risk in terms of depression. Often
caregiving duties take maximum of their time and they fail to maintain
social connections outside home.
Many caregivers feel ashamed to ask for help as they feel that can be a
sign of weakness and the caregiver feels they might not be providing the
best care.
A family caregiver often reports that there is lack of privacy in home
once they have taken the responsibility of a loved one. It becomes
difficult to set boundaries and to get away from constant interactions.
LOSS OF SOCIAL SUPPORT
This leads to depression and other mental health problems.
Additionally, the lack of social support can make it difficult for
the aged parents to access essential services such as healthcare
and financial assistance.
Lack of Social support can make it difficult for the elderly people
to maintain their independence and participate in community
activities.
Lack of Social support results in isolation and loneliness among
the aged parents.
ELDER ABUSE AND NEGLECT
Elder abuse and neglect in India is projected to increase due
to the rising population of the aged parents. As of 2021,
India had an estimated 120 million elderly individuals.
Financial abuse against the elderly is expected to rise due to
change in the family dynamics and economic pressures.
Physical abuse of the elderly is a raging issue which has
highest reported cases. It generally includes acts of violence,
assault, neglect and confinement by family members and
caregivers.
Emotional Abuse against the elderly is a significant concern,
which includes torment, humiliation, isolation and even
verbal aggression, which creates a lot of mental health
issues.
Neglect of the elderly, within the home environment is much
prevalent. Neglect becomes the root cause of failure to
provide essential care leading to deterioration of physical
and mental health.
Elderly people living in rural areas with certain disabilities is
a major concern that gives additional barriers that lets them
more vulnerable to exploitation.
DIGITAL DIVIDE
Digital Divide reduces the older people and their interest. They fear to
absorb new knowledge that includes fear and anxiety including
insecurities.
Many aged parents lack digital skills that prevents them to effectively
navigate the digital world.
The digital divide leads to increased level of isolation and loneliness
among the aged parents. Without the ability to connect they may feel
left out from all certain social interactions and communications.
Aged parents who face the digital divide, have limited access to
important news, health information and certain resources which
prevents them from making informed decisions.
Aged parents who deal in fixed income may struggle to afford the
necessary technology and certain internet services that can prove to
be a major barrier for them including challenging.
The digital divide has a major impact on the health of the aged
parents. This is crucial for managing certain chronic conditions and it
becomes also difficult to access certain healthcare services.
DEPENDENCY PROBLEMS
Around 65% of the aged people are dependent upon others for their
daily life activities and responsibilities.
Compared to aged men, women were dependent to a major extent.
The management of household is a major task and this needs to be
associated with the help of helpers and caregivers.
The elderly individuals feel despondent and downhearted at times.
But when these feelings pertain for long, they seem to go in acute
depression.
Social exclusion is another issue that increases the dependency rate
of the aged parents. They do not have anyone to interact with and
they desperately need the attention of their caregivers.
Even if the aged people are financially strong at times they are
emotionally dependent on others in order to take care of their daily
activities.
