Introduction
Illiteracy is the inability to read and write at an adequate level of proficiency that is critical for communication. Illiterate adults are unable to use printed and written information to function in the society so as to achieve one’s goals and also to develop one’s potential.
According to an international nonprofit ProLiteracy in 2003, there are 36 million adults in the United States alone. This potential includes a broad range of information-processing skills that one can use daily in school and at the community as a whole. Adult illiteracy has become a societal problem because illiterate people can never fully utilize writing and reading skills to make use of their fully potential in the world. The thesis statement of adult illiteracy involves reasons why it identified as a societal problem; the solutions proposed to solve this problem and the statistical information of adult literacy as the global societal problem.
Different types of society exist. These types of illiteracy are technological illiteracy, mathematical illiteracy, visual illiteracy, school illiteracy, community illiteracy and personal illiteracy. All these types of illiteracy are caused by various reasons. These reasons are summarized in the following discussion.
Causes of Adult Illiteracy
People are usually mistaken about illiteracy. School illiteracy is overvalued to the extent that many adults have started to believe the act of reading and writing are the only important things in school. It is this type of reasoning that make many adults less interested in wanting to gain more knowledge and see things beyond the negative images. This has become one of the main reasons why adult illiteracy has increased in the world over the last few years.
Another reason for adult illiteracy is the misuse of groups. Some people tend to agree with the argument that can make one believe that he or she is weak as a reader and he or she won’t be able to achieve literacy even after finishing school. This type of thinking lowers someone’s self-esteem and self-confidence meaning that the person will not bother to seek literacy help. People’s reading attitude are influential in literacy behaviors. According to McKenna in 2001, reading attitudes are influenced by factors such as a person’s social experiences with reading, one’s personal experiences, the cultural norms about reading, cultural norms and the learner’s preferences about reading. Attitude is associated with unwillingness to read. Every learning experience that a child has in school will at some point determine how that child will determine to learn. The learners who have had negative experiences in school will come to view school and learning in total as a bad experience that. This disengagement spreads over to adults. An adult learner who has negative perceptions about school would not want to be associated with it. These learners never get interested in educational process because they don’t see it as valuabl.

older adults and their families. The life course perspective
provides a framework for seeing older adulthood as a stage
of life in the continuum of life as well as a stage with its
own characteristics and tasks. All the roles within social
work practice can be adapted to this population. In addi-
tion, social workers working with older adults and their
families must be cognizant of the specific issues that are
associated with aging and older adulthood. The issue of
loss on many levels is a frequent topic. One area of loss
that is not frequently addressed is the loss associated with
where one lives. The word place can have several mean-
ings. One meaning has to do with where one lives. The
second meaning of loss is about one’s status and role—
place-in-society. For older adults both meanings become
important issues as they and their families navigate the
decisions that have to be made. While residence is based on
the level of independence and competence of the older
adult, the issue of place-as-status is a constant frustration
for older adults. Issues of leaving one’s place and losing
status in the eyes of others evoke a myriad of feelings
depending on the particular older adult. But given that as
one ages there are naturally some physical and mental
acuity losses, every older adult is subject to feelings of

2. Social problem
The position and status of aged individuals have been undermined by
cultural and societal transformations. In today's world, technology
has become prevalent across all age groups and backgrounds.
Unfortunately, many elderly individuals lack technological awareness
and are limited to basic phone calls, television, and radio. This
hinders their ability to perform tasks and communicate effectively,
impeding their socialization. Additionally, when rural individuals
migrate to urban areas for better job opportunities, they often leave
their aging parents behind due to the high cost of living and lack of
support. This leads to a sense of isolation and difficulty in adjusting
to city life. The complexities of modern living also devalue the
traditional beliefs held by the elderly, further widening the
generation gap. Research suggests that individuals are often
unprepared for old age, particularly those who lack family support
and rely solely on caregivers. Social problems arise when isolation
becomes the norm, as they withdraw from social circles and miss out
on celebrations. To alleviate these issues, it is crucial for the elderly to
form strong connections with friends, relatives, caregivers, and
neighbours, fostering a supportive and interactive social network.

3. Economical problem
A senior citizen needs a lot of support not only morally but also
financially. But according to the survey many of the senior
citizens were getting the morally support only. Due to financial non
supportive attitude of their children they had to work and earning
money by their own resources. Economic support does not concern
with the income only, but with other things also. In old age when
they do not have the energy and willingness to work, they need
economic support. They desire for relaxation and happiness in
their ending days of life. Most parents from the previous
generation spent a majority of their income on their children without
considering how they would sustain themselves in their old age.
Consequently, they faced financial scarcity during their later years,
with small pensions that made it challenging for them to maintain a
comfortable lifestyle.

4. Psychological problem
People in old age often dislike being alone as they tend to
believe that everyone should obey them. However, when things
don't go their way, they may experience an inferiority complex.
Therefore, mental problems in older individuals can stem from
feelings of loneliness, isolation, powerlessness, and
meaninglessness. When they live in isolation, go unrecognized
by others, or feel that their contributions and actions lack
significance and benefit for others, they are more prone to
experiencing mental health issues. They are facing various
problems, which include:
Dementia ,loneliness ,role of the family, anxiety, depression
,phobias, neglected.

5. Health Problem
At the biological level, ageing results from the impact of the
accumulation of a wide variety of molecular and cellular damage
over time. This leads to a gradual decrease in physical and mental
capacity, a growing risk of disease and ultimately death. These
changes are neither linear nor consistent, and they are only loosely
associated with a person’s age in years. The diversity seen in older
age is not random. Beyond biological changes, ageing is often
associated with other life transitions such as retirement, relocation to
more appropriate housing and the death of friends and partners.

6. Deal with Crime and Abuse
The cases of offenses against the old aged are on the increase across
the country. Today, they are victims of serious hurt, murder, and
abuse and isolated by neighbours, family members and domestic
maids. According to the National Crime Records Bureau’s report
(2018), 32496 elderly have been murdered and 5836 cases of not
amounting to murder and kidnapping have been reported all over
India from 2011 to 2018. The academicians and the policymakers
have begun paying attention to this dimension of elder abuse (Das,
2009). Help Age India (2011) has done a study in twelve major cities
of India and reported different kinds of elder abuse cases in its study.
According to it, the elderly are abused verbally (60%), physically
(48%), emotionally (37%) and economically (35%) and 20% elderly
feel neglected themselves from the family as well as society.
Furthermore, this study has reported that the major types of crimes
faced by the elderly are burglary, molestations and criminal acts.
Similarly, the Group for Economic and Social Studies (2009)
conducted a survey in four metropolitan cities of India and reported
different types of crime that are committed against the elderly. These
crimes may be defined as a crime against the body (murder, attempt
to murder, hurt and kidnapping etc.), a crime against the property
(dacoity, robbery, burglary and theft) and economic crime (cheating,
criminal breach of trust etc.). With incidences of crime against the
elderly going up, there is a perceptible increase in fear of crime
among the elderly.

7. Educational Problem
It is seen that if a person is educated he/she will have a better
lifestyle, financial status and living condition in the older age. A lack
of formal education has been shown to be related to a greater risk of
dependency on the others. This is particularly important in the Indian
setting as education levels of older Indians are very low; it has been
estimated that 73% of persons above 60 in India are illiterate.

8. Importance of caregivers
Caregivers are tasked with important duty of providing support
and encouragement for the older adults as well as themselves.
Communication is the key in the relationship between a
caregiver and the older adult. It is important to both openly
share feelings and remain empathetic to the situation.
Caregivers may help with the daily activities such as toileting,
dressing, bathing, etc. They can also help in preparing meals,
doing chores or laundry, shopping for groceries or paying bills. In
Indian context, the caregivers are usually the family members of
the older adults who help and stays with them only. The older
person’s own caregiving responsibility, as the older people who
are caregiving for family members may be reluctant to report
their own symptoms any resulting medical procedures or
hospitalization will interfere with caregiving.

9. Traditional thinking
Traditional thinking means the old concept and old way of
doing anything. The senior citizens because of their
traditional thinking face different economic problems. For
example, elderly people never prefer the calculator for
adding or subtracting things, but here young people are
more depended on technologies. Old people work in the old
manner, which consume a lot of time. Senior citizens don't
accept new technologies because they think that this is the
wastage of time.

10. The most significant social issue faced by older people is their adherence to outdated thinking. They constantly worry
about societal opinions, concern themselves with what others think of them, and are preoccupied with how society
perceives their children. They refuse to embrace the positive aspects of modern life, instead clinging to traditional values
that may jeopardize their own well-being and that of their children.
