7 tips to improve your emotional intelligence
and enhance your leadership potential.
To be an effective leader, it’s important to understand your own
emotions—and reactions. We recently asked experts to share their
advice on how to best improve your emotional intelligence and enhance
your leadership potential. Here are 7 tips to help you get started.
Tip #1: Seek feedback
Find external business coaches, internal
mentors or trusted friends who can give you
honest, candid feedback.
Tip #2: Practice meditation
Give your brain downtime so it can bring
awareness to things you’re normally too
busy to notice.
Tip #3: Practice responding
Give yourself time to thoughtfully process
situations before taking action. Then practice
how you’d respond.
Tip #4: Spend time reflecting
Give yourself permission to think about who
you truly are. Schedule a block of time on
your calendar and think about what gets you
excited.
Tip #5: Identify reactions
Be honest with yourself about your emotions.
This increases emotional transparency and
helps you better communicate with others.
Tip #6: Take assessments
Leverage tools like the Myers-Briggs test to
provide data points on your communication
style, business acumen and emotional
intelligence.
Tip #7: Make a plan
Think about how you’ve approached different
experiences, the impact you’ve had on others
and what you might do differently in the future.
