3. What is Glycoprotein ?
 Glycoproteins are proteins that contain oligosaccharide chains (glycans)
covalently attached to polypeptide side chains.
 Glycosylation
Glycosylation is the reaction in which a carbohydrate (or ‘glycan’), i.e. a
glycosyl donor, is attached to a hydroxyl or other functional group of
another molecule (a glycosyl acceptor) in order to form a
glycoconjugate. In biology (but not always in chemistry), glycosylation
usually refers to an enzyme-catalysed reaction, whereas glycation (also
‘non-enzymatic glycation’ and ‘non-enzymatic glycosylation’) may
refer to a non-enzymatic reaction[1] (though in practice, ‘glycation’
often refers more specifically to Maillard-type reactions). Glycosylation
is a form of co-translational and post-translational modification.

5. Classification Of Glycoprotein
 N-Glycosidic linkage involving the amide nitrogen of
asparagine and N-acetylglucosamine.
 O-Glycosidic linkage involving hydroxyl side chain of serine
or threonine and a sugar such as N-acetylgalactosamine.
 Glycosyl Phosphatidyl inositol (GPI linkage).

Important N-linked glycans
• are found in ovalbumin and immunoglobulin.
• Part of recognition of immunoglobulin is due to the sequence of the
oligosaccharide chain of glycans.
• Used in Intracellular targetting in eukaryotic organisms.

• Found in mucins Which are found extensively in salivary secretions
• Increase in viscosity of the fluids in which they are dissolved.
