POINT OUT THE FUNCTIONS OF ATMOSPHERE
 It is a protective sunscreen that
filters out most of the harmful UV
rays
 It is a store house of all natural gases
 It is a pipeline that moves dust, and
contaminants around the globe
 Keeping our planet at just right
Ozone layer in atmosphere
USES:
The ozone layer forms a thin
shield high up in the sky.
It protects life on Earth from
the sun's ultraviolet (UV)
rays.
EARTH’S ATMOSPHERIC GASES
Nitrogen (N2)
Oxygen (O2)
Water (H2O)
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Methane (CH4)

DEFINITION
• Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere like
water vapour, carbon dioxide, nitrous
oxide, methane and CFC trap the heat
that is reflected from the earth.
• When more of these gases are sent to the
atmosphere by human activities, the
atmosphere tends to trap more heat and
the earth is heated up.

GH GASES GH EFFECTS
 water vapour,
 carbon dioxide,
 methane,
 nitrous oxide, and
 Chloroflurocarban
(CFCs).
The greenhouse
effect is a natural
process that
warms the Earth’s
surface.
GREENHOUSE GAS
SOURCES
CO2 (CH4) CFCs N2O
2
CARBON DIOXIDE
 Most important green house gas
 Major contributor to global warming
 Plants and animals release carbon dioxide when
they breathe
 Carbon dioxide has increased due to
 Burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural
gases
 Global deforestation
HOW GLOBAL WARMING WORKS
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas)
OZONE (O3)
DEFORESTATION
METHANE SOURCE
METHANE SOURCE: STOMACHS OF COWS AND
SHEEP
Methane
source:
Rice paddies
Coal seams and leaking gas pipes
NITROUS OXIDE
Chemical fertilizers
Burning fossil fuels
CFC
Air conditioning
Foams
Cleaning solvents
EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING
EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING
 Winters become shorter and warmer
 Summers become longer and hotter
 Farmers affected due to decline in water supply
 Polar ice caps and glaciers melt causing sea
level rise
 Animals and plants may have trouble adjusting
to major changes in climate
