The competitiveness of drug development has been the impetus for new and accelerated regulatory pathways. While the growing patient-centric healthcare market coupled with a vested interest in safety information from a range of governmental and regulatory stakeholders has driven pharmacovigilance to reach a new paradigm in drug development. The consequence of which has led to tighter post-marketing surveillance systems on the global scale and a rapidly expanding volume of reported safety events impelling the industry to adopt new strategies to managing pharmacovigilance throughout the product lifecycle. In view of all these changes, it is timely to provide an overview on the concept of Pharmacovigilance, and here i3 Consult has published in this Slide Share, some key topics on Pharmacovigilance such as Signal Detection, Detection Management, Risk Management and Risk Reduction Strategies. These slides use concepts from my (Jeff Funk) course on Business Models at National University of Singapore to analyze the business model for Theranos. Theranos provides diagnostic testing for consumers that is faster and cheaper than the existing system. Its tests are done in easy to access pharmacies (e.g., Walgreens) as opposed to hard-to reach doctors’ offices. The tests use small bio-electronic integrated circuits (ICs) instead of large scientific instruments. These ICs utilize micro-fluidic channels that require a pin-prick of blood instead of a vial of blood, which makes the tests more appealing and faster than the traditional tests. The slides describe the value proposition, method of value capture, customers, scope of activities, and method of strategic control for Theranos.

Over the last 8 years Scotland has made a very significant investment in building the human and physical infrastructure required to leverage our leading position in the field of stem cell biology to support the development of a thriving Scottish Regenerative Medicine industrial sector. This initial investment is nearing completion, has substantially delivered and has started to make a real impact. However its full value will only be realised as the world-wide regenerative medicine sector matures and near term scientific, technical and industrial impediments are overcome. Our competitors in other parts of the UK and across the world are continuing to invest in this space in order to imbue their nascent industries with comparative advantage.
With these considerations in mind the community has undertaken a review of the current state of play, in order to determine what now needs to be done in order to drive the growth of the Regenerative Medicine industry in Scotland and embed significant long-term benefits to the economy and health of the nation.
This document sets out a strategy which has been developed in collaboration with the academic, business and clinical communities. It is intended for high-level discussion and to provide a framework for future collective direction and investment.

The use of stem cells in office procedures as the practice of medicine is commercializing in the USA, there are risks that arise because of this, but there are also benefits that are possible. Regulation is needed, but barring an MD and its patient from these procedures simply pushes them outside of the country or into incognito modes. This is where true danger arises, a path to expeditiously and ethically practice should be established where the patient consent is true, and the doctor is enhanced in his practice rather than tied down.

Sun Tzu was one of the greatest army generals who ever lived. In the fifth century BC he wrote what is considered to be one of the greatest treatise of military strategy, "The Art of War".
Timeless and supple, The Art of War remains resoundingly relevant and can be applied to other battles, both personal and in business.
Perhaps, we can apply some of Sun Tzu’s wisdom to help us navigate the battleground that is Business Analysis and Change:
Gene therapy is an experimental treatment that involves introducing genetic material into a person’s cells to fight or prevent disease. Researchers are studying gene therapy for a number of diseases, such as severe combined immuno-deficiencies, hemophilia, Parkinson's disease, cancer and even HIV, through a number of different approaches (see video: 'Gene Therapy a new tool to cure human diseases'). A gene can be delivered to a cell using a carrier known as a “vector.” The most common types of vectors used in gene therapy are viruses. The viruses used in gene therapy are altered to make them safe, although some risks still exist with gene therapy. The technology is still in its infancy, but it has been used with some success.

Pharma Co's in Emerging Markets - Innovation & Technology are Key to GrowthAnup Soans
Emerging markets are predicted to account for a third of global pharmaceutical spend by the end of next year – and seen as critical for the sustained growth of leading pharma companies.
The report summarises the findings of a Cambridge Consultants workshop held in Mumbai, India, earlier this year. The product design and development firm brought together senior personnel from both Indian and multinational pharma companies to debate whether emerging markets can be an opportunity to drive sustainable growth.
The consensus was that the term ‘emerging markets’ covers nations in parts of Africa, the Middle East and South East Asia, as well as the more traditional countries of Brazil, Russia, India and China. But all the delegates said emerging markets cannot be grouped into a single cluster to chalk out common strategies. Clustering markets around parameters such as regulatory pathways or therapeutic applications was considered the best approach.
“Emerging markets are facing rapid growth of chronic ‘Western’ diseases like diabetes, hypertension, chronic respiratory problems, cancer, heart disease and neurological disorders,” said Ambuj Jain, India general manager at Cambridge Consultants. “In some cases, conditions like diabetes are turning into near-epidemic situations.
“In India, for example, the prevalence of diabetes and cancer is projected to rise by 25-40% over the next 10 years. This shift gives pharma companies an opportunity to market their global products in emerging markets, backed by tested ‘go-to-market’ strategies and operating models.”
The report says key barriers which need to be addressed in many emerging markets are the affordability and accessibility of medicines. Improvements in affordability will be driven by rising disposable incomes and increasing insurance coverage. Growth in accessibility will come from increases in government spending and medical infrastructure, and new business models for rural areas. The acceptability of medicines is also expected to rise, as a result of the growth in chronic conditions – and the resulting increase in the self-administration of drugs.
Workshop delegate Sanjay Bhanushali, a director of global pharma company Cipla, said: “Emerging markets are critical for the sustained growth of leading pharmaceutical organisations. They represent a significant proportion of the world’s population and many of their governments are increasingly focusing on improving healthcare. Innovation and technology – with the emphasis on patient and stakeholder needs – will be crucial to success in these markets.”
Diagnostics was seen by the workshop delegates as a key focus area where innovation can drive sustained growth.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
