Editor's Notes
Ireland are a developed Country as they are ranked 7th in the world with economic freedom which means firstly , they have the right to vote, secondly they have the right to invest, work consume and produce however they want, and lastly they are able have rights to their own labor and property.
Punctuality:
When doing business in Ireland, you need to make sure that you arrive on time because if you’re late it can come across as disrespectful and careless. This is simple rules and regulations that can be followed by anybody and it also makes a difference. It is important that a person weary of traffic, this means that they may have to leave their houses earlier to arrive into work earlier or even appointments early to avoid lateness. If you’re late it can cause delays therefore it would be preferable to avoid lateness. Irish people have a relaxed attitude when it comes to time but the Irish tend to not be more than 15 minutes late otherwise they would call.
Gift giving:
This isn’t something that is a must for business purposes in Irish culture bust if there is an occasion then it ok for gift giving to happen. This is just a gesture to make a person feel comfortable with their surroundings.
Business dress code:
The dress code for work is normally just smart clothing nothing too extreme. Wear formal suits is great but not in all workplaces. Smart clothing is most appropriate for work as brings out more of a formal approach and a more serious work environment.
How is Uganda a Undeveloped country?
Uganda is an undeveloped country, reason being is because, they are the 95th freest country according to the 2019 index of economic freedom. This means that people in the county are currently struggling in terms of having rights over their own labour and property. Individuals in that Uganda are not free to consume, produce work and invest in any way that they want.
Who is MTN Group Limited?
MTN Group Limited is a multinational telecommunication company which operates in over 20 countries in the Middle East and Africa. MTN Group limited as of 2008 had over 90,00,000 subscribers using their services. MTN established their services to Uganda in October 21 1998, six months later when signing and getting their licences to start their services.
Language Barriers:
In MTN Group limited, having a multinational business comes with language barriers across different countries. For example, when MTN Group limited are recruiting candidates for their high to mid-level jobs, the candidate needs to be able to speak English fluently however the host country’s language is not required so not knowing Luganda is not a problem
English has been used as the default language because the company would have to work in multinational teams which having English as the default language easier to cooperate with each other. However, the lower level workers would have the rare contacts with workers of the other nationality.
Time Consuming:
There are several immigration laws that are set, which controls the time and type of business activities, that workers for MTN can do their assignment. If MTN wanted to pursue that business activity for a longer date, they would need valid working permit supplied by either legal or local entity. If the worker isn’t from that country, obtain all these procedures would be time consuming for the business making it costly for MTN to proceed with their business activities.
Currency Exchange:
In MTN, currency exchange is an important and delicate procedure where if the wrong details are translated over to different countries, it could massively cost the company. For example, translation risks could cost the MTN if the correct financial statements are not translated properly, like if the exchange rates are processed and translated properly, MTN’s annual accounts could result in a loss due to poor translation.
Another cost could be transactions from country to country. However, compared from a translation cost, transaction cost would be easier to track and measure but due to the cash flow risks in different regions, some transaction could have a bigger impact on how other MTN companies in different countries progress their business compared to MTN companies in countries like Nigeria etc.
ECONOMIC GROWTH DEVELOPMENT – (UGANDA)
Uganda’s economic growth is based on their headwinds and tailwinds as well as their macroeconomic performances. For example, Uganda supply and demands for products increased 9.7% over a year between 2017 and 2018 whilst their supply and demands for services increased 8.2% over year between 2017 and 2018. This makes the countries GDP growth slowly increased. However, majority of the future development for economic growth is reliant to the demand for better investment in their public infrastructures.
The GDP growth for Uganda between 2019 and 2020 is estimated to increase from 5.5% to 5.7%. This would be due to different foreign investments in mining and oil subdivisions, public infrastructure and the improvement in the business department. These improvements for Uganda would increase on a short to mid term basis.
Business and Meetings:
When attending business meeting in Uganda, it’s very polite to give a firm handshake. By giving a firm handshake, it’s seen as effective and polite way of introducing yourself in the meeting. If you’re a male greeting a female, it’s best that the male waits for the female to stretch their hand towards the male first before trying to shake their hands. However if the female doesn’t stretch out their hands first, the male normally bows or nods their heads.
In most countries like Uganda, punctuality is important when arriving to business meetings, however if you’re established as a senior member within the business groups, it’s known to be okay for those senior members to arrive late to the events/meeting.
Also in Ugandan business meetings, small talk is known to be necessary when negotiating about business. So the basic starter conversations and it’s also okay to ask about their backgrounds and families because business relationships tend to construct over time.
Lastly business decisions in Uganda are decided within the group. This method is seen as effective because Ugandan’s like to find external advice meaning it could take some time before a final decision could be made within the group.
Business Cards:
Business cards in Uganda are not seen as necessary compared to other countries around the world, however it’s said to be treated with respect when presenting it to others within the meeting.
Business Attires:
Like in most countries around the world, Uganda’s business attires requires you to be well dressed when attending these meetings. Being well dressed is a sign of showing respect to yourself and other around the meeting. Men and women are required to wear business suits, so for the men it would be collared shirt and pants is respectable. For the ladies, bringing tight or revealing clothes is shown as a sign of disrespect in meeting so women shouldn’t bring too many accessories. Lastly in rural area, women shouldn’t have skirts shorter than their knees.
Individualism vs collectivism (Uganda):
With Geert Hofstede and other helpers research, they have assed six different issues which society need to recognise for it to be organised. These issues are called dimensions of culture. They all get assed on scale from 0 to 100. One of these issues are Individualism vs collectivism. In Uganda, individualism is averaged around 27/100 due to Ugandan’s generally being collective people. However, there is a disadvantage to Ugandan’s individualism ranking being so low. Comparing the American dream to this scenario, the American dream is all about having a better-quality lifestyle and being able to build yourself up from scratch. However, when individualism ideas are suggested in Uganda, political leaders in Uganda come out and downgrade the suggestion, making it hard for the normal average citizen in Uganda to make something from scratch and really progress with that idea.
Individualism v Collectivism:
This particular dimension has two words ‘’individualism’’ and Collectivism. Both words can have meaning , for example individualism can be defined as people or individuals working by themselves and taking care of themselves only, where as collectivism is the opposite and can be defined as people taking care of each other as and working together for an exchange of loyalty. To put this in context with Ireland and Uganda, Ireland are a highly individualistic country, reason being is because individuals put themselves before anybody and their society therefore the governments help protect their individual rights.
