When studying a subject involving religion or ministry, one term often heard is theology. There are many different types of theology. What exactly is theology? How is theology useful and what is the difference between the variations?
Systematic Theology
Systematic Theology, as defined by B.A. Demarest, is the “attempt to reduce religious
truth to a coherent and relevant whole for the church” (Elwell 2001, 1163). Its purpose is to expound upon Biblical truth, discovering the authentic meaning and presenting it in a way that is comprehendible and applicable to the church as a whole. This also means that over the years it will need to be re-evaluated as society continually changes and the relevance of teachings may need to be modified. The truth of the word never changes however, the way it is applied may be a variable. Being able to expound upon the biblical truths, in a way others can easily comprehend can allow new followers to grasp onto the fundamental principles of who God is, and our role in relationship with Him. Maintaining relevancy to current times and trials will allow adaptation of biblical principles to present day issues.

The following research assignment is an independent study meant to reflect your research, study, and work. The purpose of this assignment is for you to interpret the text from the original author to the original recipients within the historical and cultural context. Exegesis (interpretive analysis) engages the historical, grammatical, and literary meaning of the text.
This assignment is teaching you a basic method on how to prepare to teach Scripture from an exegetical hermeneutic. After the completion of this assignment, you will be able to prepare expository messages based on an exegetical method which is consistent with the meaning of the text from the original author to the original recipients.
Your commentary paper will evidence a combination of original thought and insightful comments from resources. The commentary paper will not be an extensive string of quotes from sources. You should avoid long quotes that exceed 5 lines and are required to be block quotes.
Week 2: Title Page and Bibliography (26 pts.)
Create your title page and bibliography. The title page and bibliography must conform to Turabian format. The bibliography should represent exegetical commentaries. The better your resources, the better your paper. You need a minimum of 5 good resources (more are certainly welcome). Good resources are less than 50 years old and provide exegetical comments based on paragraph or verse units. These resources should not be primarily devotional in nature. Websites and internet blogs that are not peer-reviewed are unacceptable. Journal articles are good, but understand that journal articles are often narrow in focus or propose unique views that are not universally accepted. It is best to use commentaries that focus on detailed exegesis of Jonah. These resources will make it easier for you to write a substantive commentary. Commentaries such as the Pulpit, Jamieson-Faussett-Brown, Weirsbe, McGhee, and Matthew Henry are too old or too devotional. Commentaries such as NICOT, Expositors Bible, MacArthur, New American Commentary, NIV Application and Word Biblical are good examples. You should consult with your pastor or others in your community to gather these sources. There are Bible software programs that provide many of these sources as e-books. Journal articles can be accessed through the Liberty University Library via the ATLA Religion databases. The LU library staff is available to help you. There are LU videos to teach you how to access the library.

Instructions: These reflection papers are a chance for you to think through and relate to the assigned readings in your own way. Think of this paper as a kind of “journal” in which you reflect on the ideas in the readings. The study and practice of religion is a highly personal experience and each person comes to the Qur’an, the Bible, the Bhagavad-Gita or any other religious text in his or her own way. Therefore, you are encouraged to be creative and to write about your own personal experiences, relating them to the faith practices and wisdom traditions we will be studying this semester. However, be aware that creativity and chaos are not synonymous—in other words, you need to make sure the ideas and thoughts expressed in your paper are coherent and understandable, and most importantly, that they directly relate to the readings. Essays must be typed in 12-point font and should be 2-3 pages (double spaced) in length. When you cite a source, be sure to include the title of the book and page number. If you cite a source other than our class textbooks, include a bibliography at the end of the paper.
Some of you may be very familiar with one particular religion we are discussing this semester. If this applies to you, try (if only for the short period of weeks we are in this class together) to look at your own religion with “new eyes.” For example, if you are a Christian, try to consider how a Buddhist might see your religion. If you an Atheist, try considering life from a Muslim’s perspective. Does this change anything for you? If so, how? Don’t be afraid to experiment with ideas.

We’ve begun exploring the difference between science and religion .docx
We’ve begun exploring the difference between science and religion and facts and beliefs in the discussion threads along with the Week 1 reflection paper on beliefs. This thread explores what spiritual growth means (need compelling definitions from those quality sources) and how are discussions fit. The images of rooms in a house or possible paths to take or a journey and our work in this thread deepens the central point of a religious quest as growing spiritually.
In week five the concept of biblical literalism is examined in regards to an informed, living Word of God foundation, which is not easy, nor short term, nor isolated is the mature, experienced, and prayerful interpretation of Sacred Scriptures. But this is one of several points that we should note and then study in reference to a mature faith and biblical studies. (This is a good point to include in the Week 3 Written Assignment!) (Biology is another point to relate to our work!) Just as we were born small, defenseless, incapable of speech and had the capacity for understanding but knew nothing, human development (each of us) needed to physically, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually needed to grow, deepen, and progress through stages that take time. See Kohlberg’s Model of Moral Development that might provide some insights in graphical form.

I first recall hearing the word “rhetoric” in Mrs. McAfee’s 10th grade English class. Perhaps I had heard the term thrown around in previous English classes, but this time it stuck with me. While I don’t recall her exact words, Mrs. McAfee said that words have meaning and power and that good writing has the ability to influence, motivate, and inspire a reader. I remember these words so vividly because that was when I realized that I wanted to be a writer. I was amazed by just how much difference one could make with well-written words.
According to Kennedy (1994), rhetoric is derived from the Greek word rhetorike, which describes public speaking in a democratic society under a constitutional government (p. 3). Similar to what Mrs. McAfee said more than 20 years ago, Kennedy said that rhetoric describes the power of words and how these words can affect a situation (p. 3).
Mrs. McAfee’s words had a profound impact on me and were the reason why I became a journalist in the U.S. Navy. As a military journalist, the words that I use have a tremendous impact on public perception and support. Support from the taxpayers is vital to the continued success of the U.S. military. If we are viewed as ineffective, the defense budget could be affected, thus affecting military readiness.
When I am writing a news story, I use the first three steps of what Kennedy (1994) calls the five parts of classical rhetoric without realizing that this is what I was doing (p. 4). With the first part, invention, I think about what I am going to write about and what I want to convey. Second, arrangement, I decide how I want to present the information. In a news story, I use the inverted pyramid style, but in a feature story, I use a less formal arrangement. Third, I decide the tone of what I am trying to convey. These three steps help me write effectively and concisely.
Kennedy (1994) said, “Finally, linguistic, philosophical, and critical studies in the twentieth century have pointed to the conclusion that there is no such a thing as nonrhetorical discourse” (p. 10). Kennedy is right rhetoric isn’t something that is merely reserve for the political or academic areas, but it is a critical part of everything that we do. Rhetoric isn’t something I only use in my professional life but is also a large part of my personal life. As a parent, I use rhetoric to encourage my children to clean their room, work hard in school, and be kind to others, among many other things. I also use rhetoric when evangelizing to people around me.
Kennedy discussed the history of rhetoric and how it was established, which makes me think of a few questions regarding how rhetoric will be used in the future. How has rhetoric changed since it was formalized in the fifth century B.C.? Is rhetoric still being used as the classical thinkers intended, or have we lost the art of rhetoric?

Again, you must have a complete introduction that includes both a hook and a thesis. You also must have a complete conclusion that restates the main points and draws conclusions from the objectives. With a longer paper like this the introduction and conclusion should be a little longer as well, so that you draw all of the objectives into them and give clear organization to the paper both at its beginning and end.

Week 2: Title Page and Bibliography (26 pts.)
Create your title page and bibliography. The title page and bibliography must conform to Turabian format. The bibliography should represent exegetical commentaries. The better your resources, the better your paper. You need a minimum of 5 good resources (more are certainly welcome). Good resources are less than 50 years old and provide exegetical comments based on paragraph or verse units. These resources should not be primarily devotional in nature. Websites and internet blogs that are not peer-reviewed are unacceptable. Journal articles are good, but understand that journal articles are often narrow in focus or propose unique views that are not universally accepted. It is best to use commentaries that focus on detailed exegesis of Jonah. These resources will make it easier for you to write a substantive commentary. Commentaries such as the Pulpit, Jamieson-Faussett-Brown, Weirsbe, McGhee, and Matthew Henry are too old or too devotional. Commentaries such as NICOT, Expositors Bible, MacArthur, New American Commentary, NIV Application and Word Biblical are good examples. You should consult with your pastor or others in your community to gather these sources. There are Bible software programs that provide many of these sources as e-books. This thread explores what spiritual growth means (need compelling definitions from those quality sources) and how are discussions fit. The images of rooms in a house or possible paths to take or a journey and our work in this thread deepens the central point of a religious quest as growing spiritually.
In week five the concept of biblical literalism is examined in regards to an informed, living Word of God foundation, which is not easy, nor short term, nor isolated is the mature, experienced, and prayerful interpretation of Sacred Scriptures. But this is one of several points that we should note and then study in reference to a mature faith and biblical studies. (This is a good point to include in the Week 3 Written Assignment!) (Biology is another point to relate to our work!) Just as we were born small, defenseless, incapable of speech and had the capacity for understanding but knew nothing, human development (each of us) needed to physically, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually needed to grow, deepen, and progress through stages that take time. I first recall hearing the word “rhetoric” in Mrs. McAfee’s 10th grade English class. Perhaps I had heard the term thrown around in previous English classes, but this time it stuck with me. While I don’t recall her exact words, Mrs. McAfee said that words have meaning and power and that good writing has the ability to influence, motivate, and inspire a reader. I remember these words so vividly because that was when I realized that I wanted to be a writer. I was amazed by just how much difference one could make with well-written words.
According to Kennedy (1994), rhetoric is derived from the Greek word rhetorike, which describes public speaking in a democratic society under a constitutional government (p. 3). Similar to what Mrs. McAfee said more than 20 years ago, Kennedy said that rhetoric describes the power of words and how these words can affect a situation (p. 3).
Mrs. McAfee’s words had a profound impact on me and were the reason why I became a journalist in the U.S. Navy. As a military journalist, the words that I use have a tremendous impact on public perception and support. Support from the taxpayers is vital to the continued success of the U.S. military. If we are viewed as ineffective, the defense budget could be affected, thus affecting military readiness.
When I am writing a news story, I use the first three steps of what Kennedy (1994) calls the five parts of classical rhetoric without realizing that this is what I was doing (p. 4). With the first part, invention, I think about what I am going to write about and what I want to convey. Second, arrangement, I decide how I want to present the information. In a news story, I use the inverted pyramid style, but in a feature story, I use a less formal arrangement. Third, I decide the tone of what I am trying to convey. These three steps help me write effectively and concisely.
Kennedy (1994) said, “Finally, linguistic, philosophical, and critical studies in the twentieth century have pointed to the conclusion that there is no such a thing as nonrhetorical discourse” (p. 10). Kennedy is right rhetoric isn’t something that is merely reserve for the political or academic areas, but it is a critical part of everything that we do. Rhetoric isn’t something I only use in my professional life but is also a large part of my personal life. As a parent, I use rhetoric to encourage my children to clean their room, work hard in school, and be kind to others, among many other things. I also use rhetoric when evangelizing to people around me.
Kennedy discussed the history of rhetoric and how it was established, which makes me think of a few questions regarding how rhetoric will be used in the future. How has rhetoric changed since it was formalized in the fifth century B.C.? Is rhetoric still being used as the classical thinkers intended, or have we lost the art of rhetoric?

Just for clarification, this paper is completely about the modern challenges faced by the three religions we discussed in class, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. You need to pick one of the three religions as your focus. You are to write a short section on the similarities of the three religions, but only to highlight how these similarities contribute to the challenges. The majority of the paper is to highlight specific challenges in the selected focus religion, and how they are responding. In order for it to be a challenge, there needs to be two sides of the issue and so you need to state both sides.
You should have studied about issues and problems in your class in critical thinking (if you have not had the class yet, then the outline will help you). You are to use that knowledge to find two or three issues within one of these religions.
To make it even clearer, your outline could look like this:

Examples of challenges for Judaism would include marrying outside of the faith, the view of the Mitzvot/traditions, Zionism, homosexuality.
Examples of challenges for Islam would include violence/terrorism/Jihad, Sharia law, treatment of women (which would be separate from the role of women in the religion).
Again, you must have a complete introduction that includes both a hook and a thesis. You also must have a complete conclusion that restates the main points and draws conclusions from the objectives. With a longer paper like this the introduction and conclusion should be a little longer as well, so that you draw all of the objectives into them and give clear organization to the paper both at its beginning and end.

You will write 2Journal Article Reviews, which will be based upon your choice of articles from the professional, peer-reviewed journalarticles provided in the Assignment Instructions folder. No outside articles will be accepted. Each Journal Article Review must be approximately 3–5 double-spacedpages (not including the title and reference pages) and must be created in a Microsoft Word document. Use the following guidelines to create your paper:
1. Provide a title page in currentAPA format including only your name, the paper title (referring to the article title), and the institutional affiliation (Liberty University). Keep in mind that current APA recommends that the title length not exceed 12 words. Use the running head in the appropriate place and a page number on every page. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable.
