According to Nazari's contextual methodological model emerged from her PhD study, people's conceptions and experiences of information in real-life contexts play a key role in illuminating competencies they need to effectively make sense of, and use information. In this presentation, Nazari presents four conceptions of geospatial information as emerged from the conceptions of a group of GIS educators and students in a joint online distance learning GIS partnership programme in the UK and US. Drawing on the conceptions, she presents several competencies identified in the context of each conception and discusses their implications for information literacy education. Morville & Rosenfeld's "Information Architecture for the World Wide Web" positioned IA as an approach to web/interface design that is deeply embedded in, and strongly informed by, the LIS discipline. To re-consider of the impact of the LIS discipline on the IA profession, this presentation (and a subsequent paper) reports the preliminary results of an analysis of syllabi of information architecture courses offered by graduate schools of Library and Information Science in the United States and Canada. Presented for the Teaching IA workshop at the 2014 IA Summit in San Diego, CA.

Designing for effective and efficient pedagogical interventions and orchestration in complex Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL) ecosystems is an increasingly challenging issue. In spite of the significant potential of Learning Analytics (LA) research, it is still unclear how can LA be designed to position teachers as designers of effective interventions and orchestration actions. This talk argues for Human-Centered Design (HCD) and orchestration of actionable learning analytics. It provides a review of needs and existing approaches for HCD in LA is provided, and it proposes three HCD principles for LA solutions, i.e., agentic positioning of teachers and other stakeholders; integration of the learning design cycle and the LA design process; and reliance on educational theories to guide the LA solution design and implementation. The HCD principles are illustrated and discussed through two case studies in authentic learning contexts. Finally, some directions for future research and development are formulated to overcome the main obstacles for adoption of HCD for LA.

This model has been contextually constructed on four main foundations as emerged from Nazari's exploratory case study of IL. These are: a and b) conceptions of geospatial information and GIS as emerged from the perceptions and experiences of GIS students and educators as well as from the context of the case i.e. from GIS module outlines and an analysis of other relevant documents such as the GIS curricula as well as the researcher's observations of the ODL environment of the case; c) nature and characteristics of GIS education; d) nature and process of problem solving geospatially. This presentation introduces the MG/SIL as emerged "only" from the conceptions of geospatial information. So it does NOT present the final picture of the model. This presentation aims to highlight the implications of the model for GI/S education and research in the particular context of the City University in London (UCL). Hope you find it useful :)

Using learning analytics at school: A Go-Lab study

Go-Lab is an European project devoted to promote STEM education by means of pedagogical guidelines based on blended Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL), authoring tools for rich open educational resources, and online labs. In such a framework, we have analysed the orchestration needs of expert teachers in inquiry learning and STEM, and provided a set of Learning Analytics (LA) apps to address them. This document reports on three LA apps -Online Users, Student Time Spent, and Submitted Reports- which, based on the context description, provide visualisations of the student activity to support teacher awareness and reflection.

Presentation at Tallinn University. Archimedes Foundation fellow - Research visit during 3 months at TLU. Learning analytics is the most known type of data collected from specific technological environments that allow educators to evaluate how students are learning within a learning context. However, there are more types of data available, less-explored, that may contribute to better design educational practices. These include design analytics, which are the metrics of design decisions and related aspects that inform learning designs. Laia Albó, from Universitat Pompeu Fabra, will talk about how visual representations, authoring support, and design analytics can aid teachers in designing for learning in complex scenarios that blend the use of different spaces for learning and different types of technological tools and resources, e.g. Massive Open Online Courses. This presentation is based on her PhD thesis work, defended in November 2019.

GIS in the Rockies

Designing and developing a new online graduate geospatial program presents a unique opportunity to shape an innovative curriculum. Given that most Master’s degree programs are comprised of 12 classes or 36 credits, building a graduate level geospatial program requires significant thought and compromise. This is particularly true in geospatial education in which the curriculum must mirror the cross-disciplinary nature of the geospatial profession. This paper describes the design and development of a new online geospatial graduate program at American Sentinel University. Our Master of Geospatial Information Systems (MGIS) was designed for working professionals who have domain expertise in fields other than GIS. The MGIS will provide these individuals with the geospatial skills and knowledge necessary to incorporate geospatial concepts and practice into their professional lives. Students that end their studies upon completion of the initial 5 classes (15 credits) will be awarded a GIS Graduate Certificate. Overall, our program consists of courses that are designed to blend core geospatial fundamentals with dynamic geospatial technologies and GIS applications. The program courses will be discussed in the context of advice from industry experts, advisory boards, geospatial competency models and accrediting standards. Finally, strategies for assessing and maintaining program quality and relevancy will be outlined.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic Imperative

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction. This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
