- #3 My definition of Blogging is “ Writing for fun and personal gain!”This is workshop is very much like a course that I used to teach called “Effective Writing”Effective writing is all about the who, what, where and why?So you need to have a subject – who, what, when, where, how?An objective or goal – why? Which includes your reasons for writing and understanding your potential audience and in terms of blogging on the WWW your potential reach.Let me explain these further…
- #4 Where to start?In writing the best place to start is always to write about what you know.Why because you want to write from a position of knowledge and strength. You want to sound intelligent, knowledgeable, witty, intelligent.You want to share your knowledge with others, to be a knowledge makers, creator, collaborator…Ask yourself the question - What are myareas of knowledge and expertise?Examples: Accountancy & Photography – quite different of courseIf it is accountancy – how can I make accountancy sound interesting to an audience of accountants, but also to a broader audience - perhaps students who are future accountants?If it is photography – can my photographs tell the story? do I need to add commentary and descriptions? Is my potential audience photographers (amateur & professional), or more broad such as students, businesses such as advertising, marketing etc.?Overcoming the big question?What is the big question?The question in the back of most people’s mind is “Am I good Enough? Unselfconscious people wouldn’t even ask it, but if you have even the slightest self doubt, you will ask yourself that question. The answer is of course YES and part of the project for you as a writer/bloggers is to be better than good enough, it is to be great. Think of your blogging as creating Art, as long as you approach your Art from your areas of interest, knowledge and expertise and you practice your Art regularly to develop your skills. You will develop further those interests, knowledge and expertise and become great.
- #5 How does he do it?He writes and posts on his blog every day.He know his audience and his potential reach, i.e. the kinds of people that will search for his work on the Web.He has developed a large and quite diverse fan base through his books, blog and speaking engagementsHe writes creative posts with brief and pointed commentary on subjects related to business endeavours such as employment, productivity, satisfaction, technology etc…He questions attitudes and understandingsHe looks for the positives within the negatives and neutral aspects of life and work.

- #7 Let’s look at my example – this is what I came up with as some potential starting points for me which might be able to find an audience. I’m still not sure what that Something Really Unique is but I am working on it…Now let’s look at some of you as examples and make some lists. Who is up for sharing a few things of personal interest?Writing at Random is one method I enjoy using to get me started with writing creatively. It is a like pulling names out of a hat.You take a piece of paper, rip it up in to small pieces and then write each item on its own piece of paper. Then scatter them about and pick them up randomly. When you have collected them together you select the subject matter from the one on top and begin writing about that. Then work your way through the rest.If it doesn’t work first time you can repeat the process and see how you go… Some subjects won’t work, so discard them until later or if you are game swap them with a friend and see what happens…Inspiration is a mysterious thing but it is there for all of us to find.
- #8 Content is Key!Content attributes means the qualities that your text, images and or video must contain to capture the attention of your audience and keep them coming back for more. This is not an extensive listContent attributesPersonalityStyleAttraction (Interest, Empathy etc.)Sense of development (an ongoing story)Secret (and the sharing of) both public and yet personalSome people write great content, some take great photos, some make great videos, some can combine all of these and more.
- #9 Rehashing some of the finer points here…When you choose to begin writing or creating a Blog look at your own likes and interests.What do you find fun and interesting?Think of it as a work of ART – what would you like to create art out of?Words, Stories, History, News, Photographs, Music, Videos, Cultural commentary, Scrapbooking, Travel experiences, Study experiences, Mentoring experiences…Think of it as a Work-in-Progress, as we do in life, we live and learn and when we share with others they can learn from us…Whether you choose to write to help others, to promote a business or charity, to share a common interest or to capture your own experiences in a diary or biography…You should be able to look at Blogging as Fun and (I believe) you personally have a lot to gain by developing your own interests, knowledge and expertise and having the confidence to share this with others.
