The geology of North Macedonia includes Precambrian crystalline rocks over 1 billion years old as well as a variety of sedimentary and volcanic rocks formed between 539 million years ago to the present. The country can be divided into four geological zones distinguished by rock types and tectonic features. Paleozoic rocks include evidence of formations from Riphean to Devonian periods containing fossils. Mesozoic rocks feature ophiolite massifs and limestones.
