SEMANTIC HORROR
• Semantic aspects in horror are usually different types of props that are
used to generate an atmosphere of fear for the audience.
• Some examples of these semantic elements are a haunted house,
blood, knives and masks. The usual setting would be an isolated
location with low key lighting and sometimes bad weather conditions.
SYNTACTIC HORROR
• Horror movies of the past mainly focused on a group of people going to
an isolated place and a monster or spirit is attacking them. Most of the
characters die, if not all and there is a sense of mystery left about the
evil entity and the viewer is exposed to the theme of helplessness.
• In more modern horror themes of helplessness comes more from within
someone who is experiencing something that only they can deal with
themselves. For example something mentally that someone is
suffering.
SEMANTIC COMEDY
• Semantic aspects of comedy are that the characters are usually a family
or a group of friends which are made up of both males and females who
have no specific age. Also all the characters are very over the top and
stereotypical.
• The location of the movie is usually set in in schools, characters homes
or public places.
• There usually are no over the top or special props in comedies.
• The costumes in comedies are often everyday regular clothes. The
clothes would usually match the theme of the film.
SYNTACTIC COMEDY
• In comedies there is usually a variety of ages among the characters.
Also there is the presence of both genders and variety of different ages.
This all also is effected by the target audience of the film, therefore if
the movie is aimed at adults the characters will mostly be adults and the
humour will be aimed more at getting adults to laugh.
SEMANTIC ROMANTIC
• Some examples of semantics in Romantic movies are the types of
setting such as a party, school or in a collage.
• In these types of films there is usually people having relationship
problems before they meet a love interest.
• Finally the ends with the couple kissing in a scene.
• The costumes used are usually very normal clothes.
• There are no major props used in romantic movies.
SYNTACTIC ROMANTIC
• The types of syntactic elements in romantic movies are that two people
meet each other in a dramatic way.
• These people are interested in a relationship but one is more hesitant
then the other.
• At one point these people drift apart but this ultimately leads them to
realising that they need each other,
• This all finally leads to the final romantic scene between the couple.
• Also there is usually someone who is trying to break up the relationship
between the two out of jealousy.
