A nuclear power plant contains a nuclear reactor where nuclear fission chain reactions produce thermal energy. This thermal energy is used to boil water and produce steam that spins turbines connected to generators, producing electricity that enters the electrical grid. Spent cooling water is drawn from an outside source, condenses the steam, becomes hot, and is then released into a cooling tower.
