Chapter 01 :
INTRODUCTION
Southeast Bank Limited is a scheduled Bank under private sector established
under the ambit of bank Company Act, 1991 and incorporated as a Public
Limited Company under Companies Act, 1994 on March 12, 1995. The Bank
started commercial banking operations effective from May 25, 1995 by the
Principal Branch located at the Annex Building, 1Dilkusha Commercial Area,
Motijheel, Dhaka.
Southeast Bank Limited has been awarded license by the Government of
Bangladesh as a Scheduled Bank in the private sector of banking and financial
services and facilities in Bangladesh.
Thus within this very short period of time it has been able to create an image
for itself and has earned significant reputation in the country’s banking sector
as a Bank with vision.
Significance of The Report
This internship report is an important partial requirement of four years BBA
graduation program. This is because knowledge and learning become perfect
when it is associated with theory and practice. By this internship program
students can establish contacts and networking. Contacts may help to get a job
in practical life. That is, student can train and prepare themselves for the job
market.
Objective of the Report
 Broad Objective :
The broad objective of this report is to know about the “General Banking
Activities of Southeast Bank Limited”.
 Specific Objective :
 To relate academic learning with practical work in banking segment.
 To observe relationship between banker and customer.
 To observe the processes of ‘Account Opening’.
 To know different types of accounts and schemes that can be
opened and its advantages.

 Interpersonal communication with the officers and executive of SEBL
Agargaon Branch.

 Personal interview with the customers.

Limitation of the Study
In my internship period, I have found some barriers to complete the work
in a conductive way within shorter period of time. These are given below :
 Insufficient access to information
 Lack of published materials
 Lack of Time
 Lack of proper knowledge
 Lack of proper communication with the bankers and customers

The principal activities of the bank are to provide a comprehensive range
of financial services, personal and commercial banking, trade and services,
cash management, treasury, securities and custody services as an agent of
the Bangladesh Bank.
For its retail customers it offers savings, remittance and deposit products
including savings accounts, daily profit accounts, Islamic Banking &
Savings Scheme.
The philosophy of the bank is “A Bank with Vision” that indicates its
sincerity, integrity as well as the strength of mind to cope with the global

General Banking Activities
Of
Southeast Bank Limited
General banking activities is the starting point for the entire bank.
Like other department it gives day to day service to the customer.
In this department they daily meets with customers demand and
also fulfill customer requirement. Every day they deposit from the
customer and demand for cash by providing cheque. It’s mainly
open new account based on customer demand, remit funds, issue
bank draft and pay order etc. General banking is also known as
retail banking.
General banking department has four functions such as front desk
or account, cash section, clearing section, account section in
Southeast Bank. Those various sections do various works by
which general banking activities.

A banker can also close the account of his customer or stop the operation of the account under following
considerable circumstances:
 Death of customer. Customer’s insanity and insolvency.
 Order of the court (Garnishee order)
 Specific charge for fraud forgery.
 Stop payment of check.
 Firstly, the account holder will apply to stop the payment of his check.
 There is a register for this purpose. It is kept by the authorized officer.
 The officer will see the condition of account and verify everything.
 If the check is dishonored due to insufficiency of funds SEBL inform the a/c holder immediately.

L/C (Letter of credit)
The method used to make the imbursement in aid between the vendor
and importer by a Commercial Bank is Letter of Credit. A credit in
foreign currency in courtesy of the exporter at a bank in the letters state
is opened by importer in a country desires his/her bank. Payment of the
quantity by the importer or agreeable security contradict by the letter of
credit is allotted.
Letter of credit Application is a fairly preparation in the middle of
client and the bank and it delivers a L/C to the importer which is a
written form.

Findings
 Employees are used by the customers in improper manners.
 All the organizations including banks are now mostly depends on
computer but employees do not have much knowledge on computer.
 Lack of proper maintenance file.
 Lack of training.
 Lack of strong monitoring unit.
 The counter service is sometimes unsatisfactory because of not
having enough employees for the sector.
 Advertising and promotion is one of the weak point of Southeast Bank
Limited. Southeast Bank Limited does not have any Effective Promotional
activities through advertisement, but other banks have better promotional
strategy. Therefore, most customers are not known about their Islamic
banking branch.
 Southeast bank use Ultimus software for performing their banking activities.
But the software often hanged as because of slower upgrade of data by vender.
Therefore it delays to performing banking activities at time.
 The Branch is making profit day by day at a steady rate. The rate of deposit
collection is increasing at a positive rate.
Recommendations
 To the SEBL employees’ authority can provide long term training and
behavioral training to provide better customer service.
 Bank should offer different kinds of new facilities to its customers to
attract them.
 Website of SEBL Bangladesh need to be enriched.
 SEBL’s ATM booths are not sufficient. So they should open more ATM
booths all over the country.
 Online Customer Service should be open soon in SEBL.
 Improvement of online banking
 Recruitment of more Employees
 SEBL’s promotion is not enough strong. They should improve their
promotion department.
 More research and innovative ideas should be made.
Conclusion
Banking sector of Bangladesh has a huge opportunity to become a major part of the
economy. Through the investigation and practical experience about banking sector
of Bangladesh, many relevant sites are discussed regarding general banking
activities of SEBL in this report by above discussion one thing is clear that the
situation of general banking activities of SEBL is so satisfactory.
Moreover, the deposit section of SEBL plays a vital role for bank’s investment in
many profitable projects and this will have a great impact on our economy. So day
to day general activities of Southeast Bank Ltd has kept a role in profit making,
creating corporate band value and reputation.
In the short period of banking services, SEBL has shown better performance I
every aspect. It is not only doing business but also contributing to the society
through its service. If the government implements nominal policy, then SEBL will
achieve their expected goal and will be able to contribute a vital role in the social
economy.
