Gender stereotypes are beliefs about the personal attributes of females and males based on their biological sex. They influence how people are expected to act, feel, and behave. Common female stereotypes include being nurturing, gentle, and kind-hearted. Common male stereotypes include being tough, protective, and aggressive. Gender stereotypes can negatively impact people's performance and physiological health by causing stereotype threat, increased blood pressure, depression, and anxiety. They also historically disadvantaged women's advancement socially, in education, and the workforce by promoting beliefs that women are submissive, incompetent, and only suited for certain jobs. Stereotypes should change as the relationship between gender groups changes over time.
