Where the Whales live: the pyramid model of F2P designNicholas Lovell
Is monetization ruining F2P games? Funnel-driven design that aims to filter out freeloaders and squeeze the whales is not an inevitable result of the free-to-play business model. We need to build new models for visualizing how we can incorporate the full breadth of the customer demand curve. The pyramid is a way of putting into practice the goal of free-to-play game design: let anybody access your game, and allow people who love what you do to spend lots of money on things they truly value.

There are lots of suggestions about how to make a game fun. Best practices are everywhere, but you can't just follow them blindly. To create a fun game, you have to figure out how best practices integrate into your specific game. Come see what we did wrong, and what we learned along the way.
Sarah Romoslawski and Marina Kobayashi presented this talk at the 1st Game Design Conference in San Francisco on September 17th, 2012. The talk defines Games User Research (GUR), and includes two perspectives on practicing GUR at different companies, using GUR with different platforms, genres, and with different target audiences.
Unlock your creative potential: 7 steps to becoming a game designerEthan Levy
Game Design is simultaneously the industry’s most romanticized and most misunderstood profession. Everyone wants to be a game designer. Everyone thinks they are a game designer. Yet, few understand what a game designer’s job truly is or how to become one. This presentation takes a peek behind the curtain to explain what being a professional game designer is and what it isn’t. It then presents 7 concrete steps that aspiring game designers can take towards becoming a game designer.
Emily Greer at GDC 2018: Data-Driven or Data-Blinded?Kongregate
In the last decade of data analysis, A/B testing and predictive modeling have transitioned from an afterthought to a given in the game industry. Data can be invaluable in understanding the player and making decisions, but it can just as easily lead the industry astray, or worse, narrow the way the industry thinks. When should you be driven by data, and when should you let your imagination roam free? This session will expose common mistakes and pitfalls, both technical and emotional, as well as provide practical guidance on how to improve the rigorousness of your tests and the quality of your data, and how to make sure you don't lose the forest for the trees.

Getting into the Game: How EA Put User Research into PracticeEffective
Presented at Total Customer Experience, February 2015, by:
• Jordan Girman, group user experience director, EA
• Shane Johnston, lead experience planner, EffectiveUI
Personas and journey maps are becoming more commonplace these days, as companies realize the value of understanding their customers beyond their age, gender and income. Getting a clear picture of customers’ needs, goals, motivations and attitudes plays a critical role in designing products and solutions that resonate with your audience.
But what happens after the project is complete and the personas are delivered? In many cases, they may live in posters on the wall, or in a PowerPoint presentation in a file. How do companies make sure that their investment in this important research actually serves its purpose?
EA conducted a large ethnographic research project with user experience agency EffectiveUI, where 25 NHL and UFC gamers were observed playing their respective games and interviewed on expectations, perceptions and motivations. The result was a set of comprehensive persona profiles that clearly define EAs audiences for these specific games.
Through the lens of EA’s experience, this session will cover how to embark on a persona project within a large corporate culture, as well as how to keep personas alive beyond the deliverable and make them prevalent within the organization.
Game Design: The Pillars of a Game / Henrique Olifiers (Bossa Studios)DevGAMM Conference
As one of the most powerful game design tools, the concept of pillars focuses teams around key features, player emotions and end goals of a game from inception to release. In this session we'll discuss the value of pillars, how to best employ them in a game project and discuss practical examples where pillars work towards making a better game (and a happier team!)
Note: while this session is a standalone presentation, it's best taken advantage of as a segway of DevGAMM Vilnius' 'The Craft of Game Design', which you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SauOF0v-mnU
Game Metrics and Biometrics: The Future of Player Experience ResearchLennart Nacke
There is a call in industry and research for objective evaluation of player experience in games. With recent technological advancements, it is possible to automatically log numerical information on in-game player behavior and put this into temporal, spatial, and psychophysiological context. The latter is done using biometric evaluation techniques, like electromyography (EMG), electroencephalography (EEG), and eye tracking. Therefore, it is necessary to discuss experimental results in academia and best practices in industry. This panel brings together experts from both worlds sharing their knowledge using conventional and experimental, qualitative and quantitative methods of player experience in games.
In my experience, more game projects get off track from a lack of creative clarity than from any other cause. This is a set of exercises that I use on my customers' projects to help them clarify and maintain focus on their most critical creative elements.
