The document provides an overview of the UK Government's G-Cloud program to adopt cloud-based services. Some key points:
- G-Cloud aims to break up the oligopoly of a few large IT suppliers and increase competition, innovation and use of SMEs.
- CloudStore is an online marketplace for public sector cloud services that provides transparency on pricing and service assurance status.
- Over 250 suppliers have been awarded under the first G-Cloud procurement, most of which are SMEs, offering over 1,700 cloud services.
- Benefits include reduced procurement times, costs savings, increased supplier performance transparency, and facilitating cloud service reuse across government.
Logistics stakeholders are under increased pressure to guarantee reliable real-time information exchange. A vast amount of technologies are already available, but these are “island applications” and missing the opportunity to optimize the performance of their cooperation. This session aims to show the benefits of merging two worlds: logistics and cooperative mobility services. The aim is to demonstrate the exchange of information in a secure and controlled way in currently existing freight and transport systems and services, to enhance the mobility of goods in the field of urban mobility and city logistics.
Orange Business Services provides an overview of its long-term SDN/NFV (Software Defined Networking/Network Functions Virtualization) vision, roadmap and the benefits enterprises can enjoy today with better control over their connectivity, security and cloud application performance.

These slides use concepts from my (Jeff Funk) course entitled Biz Models for Hi-Tech Products to analyze the business model for Baxter’s unique robot. Its robot is much easier to teach than is other robots because of its force feedback sensors and the easy motion of their arms. These sensors also cause Baxter’s robots to stop when they feel resistance and thus are much safer than are other robots and do not require protective screening. Baxter’s robots are also lighter and cheaper. We recommend that Baxter target high mix parts fabrication and assembly and the external development of new end-effectors that can broaden the market for Baxter’s robots.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

52. How to Buy
If your organisation uses the Government
eMarket Place, or has internal procurement
procedures, you should use those routes to
purchase
53. Buy - 4 Steps
Step 1 - Understand the business requirement
Step 2 - Find best-fit candidate service(s)
Step 3 - From the Long List to the Short List
Step 4 - Buying and not buying
54. Buy - Step 1
Understand the business requirements
● G-Cloud is part of a new way of thinking
about IT and might mean a radical new way
of thinking about your requirements
55. Buy - Step 2
Find best-fit candidate service(s)
● In many cases you will not find something
that meets 100% of your requirements –
that’s not the aim of the exercise, you are
looking for what best meets them. In practice
you might find that the Requirements / Best-
Fit process is takes a couple of iterations as
you understand what commodity services
are available
56. Buy - Step 3
From the Long List to the Short List
● When you first look on the CloudStore for
Services you will likely be searching on the
type of service that you need rather than
specific features. This will give you a long list
of suppliers. From this you can use the
CloudStore and the Suppliers’ information to
work down to those suppliers that best meet
your requirements including your budget
57. Buy - Step 3
In some cases your short list will not comprise
of services that are functionally identical as far
as your requirements are concerned, but you
still need to make a fair choice among them.
To do this you can look at four aspects of the
services and use these to measure which
service in the short list best meets your needs.
58. Buy - Step 3
You can weight these factors however you like
just so long as the same weighting is applied to
the whole short list in the same way. The
factors are:
● Whole life cost
● Functional fit
● Non functional characteristics
● Service management
59. Buy - Step 3
To determine which of the services is the best
fit you might need to look at Service Definitions
in detail and even try the services – but you
must do the same with each one on your short
list.
60. Buy 4 - Step 4
Congratulations you have found the service you
are after. If you want to buy it (you don’t have to
of course), you now have to do two things: buy
the service and ‘not buy’ the rest of the short
list.
61. Buy - Step 4
Not buying
You must inform those suppliers that you short
listed but do do not buy from that they made
the short list but were not selected.
It would be further assistance to suppliers if you
said why they were not selected.
62. Buy - Step 4
Buying
To buy one of the Services you form what’s
known as a Call-Off contract with the supplier.
If something is on the CloudStore it means that
they already have a contract with Government
to supply services, all you are doing is agreeing
exactly which ones you want supplied to you
63. Buy - Step 4
If your initial order is over what’s known was
the OJEU threshold currently set at £113,057
(see latest guidance for details) or you are
reasonably certain it will be over it within the
year then after you inform the short list you
must wait 10 days before finalising your order
64. Buy - Step 4
To place an order with a supplier you should
follow whichever of your organisation
procedures fits with the buying option the
supplier has provided. For example you may
have access to Government Procurement
Services GEM system or you may have a GPC
card or purchase order system.
65. Buy - Step 4
