Gastronomy is the study of food and how it is eaten, as well as the science of cooking. It involves understanding the chemistry and physics of food, food history, culinary anthropology, world cultures, and taste. Taste is an important part of gastronomy, as humans have between 2,000-8,000 taste buds in their mouth that help determine likes and dislikes to protect us from poisonous foods and push us to eat nutritious options, with the five basic taste sensations being sweet, salty, savory, bitter, and sour.
