1. History of Philippine Internet

2. 1986
On August of the said year, the first Philippine-based
bulletin board system (BBS) became open to the
public. It then had an annual subscription fee of 1000
pesos that back then, was still a precisely huge
amount. Not everyone could afford let alone
understand how the BBS worked. It was still very
complex.

3. 1991-1993
 These were the years wherein the emergence of email
gateways and services in the Philippines started. Local
and international email to FidoNet users also became
known and popular.

4. 1993
 During the June of this year, the Philnet program was
born. The Philnet committee composed of back then
college students from the Ateneo de Manila University
(Richie Lozada and Arnie del Rosario), De La Salle
University (Kelsey Hartigan-Go), University of the
Philippines Diliman (Rodel Atanacio and Rommel Feria)
and other DOST members, would eventually play a
significant role in connecting the Philippines to the
World Wide Web.

5. March 29, 1994 – 1:15 am
 A certain worker from ComNet, a company that
supplied Cisco routers to the Philnet project, named
Benjie Tan announced to the public that he
established the Philippine's first connection to the
Internet at a PLDT network center in Makati City.

6. March 29, 1994 – 10:15 am
 The announcement of the Philnet’s kbit/s connection
being live was done at the The First International E-Mail
Conference at the University of San Carlos in Talamban,
Cebu. It was done by Dr. John Brule, a Professor in
Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Syracuse
University with him being quoted with “We’re in”.
