A gap year is a period of time when students take a break from formal education between high school and college or between completing a degree and beginning a career. During a gap year, students can travel, work in fields like teaching or conservation, retake exams, learn new skills or languages, or volunteer abroad. While a gap year provides opportunities for personal and professional growth, some argue it may make it more difficult to return to studying afterwards if too much time passes.
