What Are Dreams?
Dreams are basically
stories and images our
mind creates while we
sleep. Dreams can be
vivid. They can make you
feel happy, sad, or scared.
And they may seem
confusing or perfectly
rational.
Studies have shown the importance of dreams to our
health andrifting off into REM sleep. They found that
those who were not allowed to dream are experienced
well-being. In one study, researchers woke subjects just
as they were
 Increased tension
 Anxiety
 Concentrating
 Lack Depression
 Difficulty of coordination
 Weight gain
 Tendency to hallucinate
Why Do We Dream?
Many experts say that dreams exist to:
 Help solve problems in our lives
 Incorporate memories
 Process emotions
Sigmund Freud believed dreams are a
window into our subconscious. He believed they
reveal a person's:
 Unconscious desires
 Thoughts
 Motivations
Some experts say dreams have no connection
to our real emotions or thoughts.
Others say our dreams may reflect our own
underlying thoughts and feelings. By interpreting
our dreams, we may be able to gain insight into our
lives and ourselves.
Often people report having similar dreams.
While the dreams may be similar, experts say the
meaning behind the dream is unique to each
person.
Therefore, many experts say not to rely on
books or "dream dictionaries“, which give a specific
meaning for a specific dream image or symbol.
What Do Dreams Mean?
Different Types Of Dreams
These are your bog standard
dreams where you have no idea
you're dreaming until you wake up.
Everybody has normal dreams every
single night. These dreams arise
mostly out of REM sleep and are
essential to our survival. In fact, we
would eventually die without them.
What are Normal Dreams?
During day dreams, you are
semi-awake. Clearly not asleep - but
not fully checked-in with reality,
either. A daydream starts with a
compelling thought, memory or
fantasy, and your imagination runs
away. The longer you daydream, the
deeper you becomes immersed in
your private fantasy land.
What are Day Dreams?
NIGHTMARES
Nightmares, or bad dreams, are any normal
dreams with a very scary twist. Often nightmares
are caused by:
 Stress, conflict, and fear
 Trauma
 Emotional problems
 Medication or drug use
 Illness
Nightmares are indication of a fear that
needs to be acknowledged and confronted. It is a
way for our subconscious to make up take notice.
Why Do Nightmares Occur?
Progressive dreams occur when
you have a sequence of dreams that
continue over a period of nights. The
dream continues where you left off
the previous night. Such dreams are
problem-solving dreams and help to
explore different options and various
approaches to a problem, situation or
relationship
Progressive Dream
Recurring dreams repeat themselves
with little variation in story or theme.
These dreams may be positive, but most
often they are nightmarish in content.
Dreams may recur because a conflict
depicted in the dream remains unresolved
or ignored. Once you have found a
resolution to the problem, your recurring
dreams will cease.
Recurring Dreams
Research has shown that
lucid dreaming is accompanied
by an increased activation of
parts of the brain that are
normally suppressed during
sleep. Lucid dreaming represents
a brain state between REM sleep
and being awake.
What Are Lucid Dreams?
False awakenings are basically very vivid
types of dreams. Like any normal dream, you
assume you're awake, and you certainly don't
know you're dreaming (if you do, you're already
lucid). It begins in your bedroom, or the last
place you went to sleep, or even a different bed
altogether. You dream that you've woken up for
real and somehow your brain mimics every detail
of the room, exactly as it should be. Unless you
question your reality you don't stand a chance.
What are False Awakening?
Healing dreams serve as messages for the
dreamer in regards to their health. Many dream
experts believe that dreams can help us avoid
potential health problems and help us to heal
when we are ill. Our bodies are able to
communicate to us through our dreams to “tell”
us that something is not quite right with our
bodies even before any physical symptoms show
up. Dreams of this nature may be telling the
dreamer that he/she needs to go to the dentist or
doctor.
Healing Dreams
Prophetic dreams also referred to as
precognitive or psychic dreams are dreams
that seemingly foretell the future. One
rational theory to explain this
phenomenon is that our dreaming mind is
able to piece together bits of information
and observation that we normally overlook
or that we do not seriously consider. In
other words, our unconscious mind knows
what is coming before we consciously piece
together the same information
Prophetic Dreams
Signal dreams help you
how to solve problems or
make decisions in your
waking life.
Signal Dreams
Epic dreams (or Great dreams) are so
huge, so compelling, and so vivid that you
cannot ignore them. The details of such
dreams remain with you for years, as if your
dreamt it last night. These dreams possess
much beauty and contain many archetypal
symbology. When you wake up from such a
dream, you feel that you have discovered
something profound or amazing about
yourself or about the world. It feels like a
life-changing experience.
Epic Dreams
Mutual dreams are described as such
when two people have the same dream.
Mutual dreams may be planned, meaning
that two people actively work toward
achieving one dream scenario or goal. It is
a way to improve communication and
build trust. Mutual dreams can also be
spontaneous. You find out that a friend, a
significant other, faraway relative, or
someone has had the same dream on the
same night as you.
What are Mutual Dreams?
There are many examples of situations where
a dream came true or was telling of a future event.
When you have a dream that then plays out in real
life, experts say it is most likely due to:
 Coincidence
 Faulty memory
 An unconscious tying together of known
information
However, sometimes dreams can motivate you
to act a certain way, thus changing the future.
Can Dreams Predict the
Future?
Researchers don't know for sure why dreams are
easily forgotten. Maybe we are designed to forget our
dreams because if we remembered all our dreams, we
might not be able to distinguish dreams from real
memories.
Also, it may be harder to remember dreams because
during REM sleep our body may shut down systems in our
brain responsible for creating memories. We may only
remember dreams that occur just before we wake, when
certain brain activities have been turned back on.
Some say our minds don't actually forget dreams, we
just don't know how to access them. Dreams may be stored
in our memory, waiting to be recalled. This notion may
explain why you may suddenly remember a dream later in
the day -- something may have happened to trigger the
memory.
Why Are Dreams Hard to
Remember?
 Wake up without an alarm.
 Remind yourself to remember.
 Dream playback.
Tips for Dream Recall
 Write it down.
 Journal without judgment.
 Give each dream a title.
How to Make Sense of Your
Dreams
Dreams have fascinated
humanity since the beginning of
time and will likely continue to
mystify us. And although science
has allowed us to learn much
about the human brain, we may
never know for sure the meaning
behind our dreams.
