The e-Business Lab of the Athens University of Economics organized an international Energy Efficiency research workshop on 7/11/2018 with the participation of 30 experts representing 10 major international R & D projects funded by the EU H2020 Program and emphasizing energy saving in residential sector. The research projects presented were: Entropy, Charged, GAIA, Beneffice, Mobistyle, GreenSoul, EnCOMBASS, Eco-bot, UtilitEE and C-Track 50, involving over 60 major research / academic partners and large organizations from different European countries. The workshop took place at OPA's Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center (ACEin).

2. Educational approach and rationale
• Use real-world data generated inside schools to:
• Enable more interesting lectures
• Let students discover things on their own
• Learn while doing cool stuff!
• Apart from results inside class, students tend to carry
changes in their behavior on to their home environment

4. • Temperature
• Relative humidity
• Illuminance (how much light)
• Motion detection
(presence in the room)
• Noise level
• CO2 concentration
• Electrical power
consumption
What is monitored in
the school building
6. www.gaia-challenge.com
• Use gamification to motivate students to engage in energy
saving actions through “competition” and comparison
between different classes/schools
• Classic board game visualization
• Students move on the board by completing “challenges”
• The game gradually becomes more interactive
• Students can monitor the progress of their classmates
and students from other schools

9. Educational lab kit
• “Hands-on” approach, using IoT components and electronics.
• Already assembled devices and commercial IoT sensors and
actuators to allow students to complete activities regarding
energy and sustainability.
• No extensive wiring between the different components, or
complicated interconnections.
• GAIA has prepared a series of lab activities:
• “Energy consumption in our school”.
• “Lighting inside schools”.
• “Heating inside schools”.
• “Temperature, Humidity and Thermal Comfort”.
• “Appliances and Energy efficiency”.
• “Energy Inspectors - The energy footprint of our building”.

11. Evaluation by the students
• We conducted a form-based survey focusing on the
gamification component (196 high-school students in Sweden
and Italy) and the Educational Lab Kit (132 6th graders in
Greece).
• Regarding the Challenge:
• 78% of the students found the content interesting
• 89% found the activity user-friendly
• Regarding the Lab Kit, when asked :
• “Would you repeat the same experiment in your home or inform your
parents about it”, students answered “Absolutely” 22%, “Very much”
22%, “Moderately” 21%.
• “Did it help you learn something about the building’s behavior”,
students answered “Absolutely” 26%, “Very much” 22%, “Moderately”
29%.
• “Would you like to repeat such an activity”, 56% answered “Very much”
and “Absolutely”

12. Evaluation by the teachers
• 5 teachers from 5 different schools, whose classes
participated in the lab activities, over a period of 4 months
• To the question “have you noticed any substantial change
with respect to students’ performance after GAIA activities
began?”:
• 1 teacher noticed a “mild change”, while the 4 others answered with
“very significant change”.
• In free text:
• “positive changes in daily class activity and greater interest
towards programming”
• “students who previously were indifferent, now have significant
participation during lab activities”.
• “low performing students had a chance to exhibit their capabilities
and receive positive comments from the rest of their class”.
