UNIPI/CNIT presented the GAIA Project at I-Cities 2019 in Pisa (http://icities2019.unipi.it/), describing the experiences and lessons learnt in carrying out hands-on IoT and energy saving activities with students in Greece, Italy and Sweden.

GAIAH2020 project • Context • Educational buildings constitute 17% of the EU non-residential building stock (in m2) • 27% of EU households include at least 1 child under the age of 18 (Eurostat) • Makes sense to target the educational sector! • GAIA objectives • Increase awareness of the school communities in Europe regarding sustainability and energy savings • Utilize an IoT infrastructure inside school buildings for data • Produce actual energy savings by changing students’ and teachers’ behavior Call EE-11-2015 - New ICT-based solutions for energy efficiency Challenge: motivate and support citizen's behavioural change to achieve greater energy efficiency taking advantage of ICT while ensuring energy savings Green Awareness in Action 2

Educational approach and rationale • Use real-world data generated inside schools to: • Enable more interesting lectures • Let students discover things on their own • Learn while doing cool stuff! • Apart from results inside class, students tend to carry changes in their behavior on to their home environment • Multiplier effect 24/09/2019 4

  9. 9. But… • Although we provide tools, it’s not always easy for schools to integrate them in their workflow • It’s not always simple/trivial to use external tools during class • Not a lot of teaching time available! • How can we engage teachers and students? Green Awareness in Action 9

  16. 16. Group 1 - The problem We perceive a high temperature in the computer lab (lab 5) even in winter. These problems have also been noticed in other areas of the school. Green Awareness in Action
  17. 17. Group 2 - Monitoring • Use of the Raspberry and GrovePi sensors to monitor the temperature in the computer lab • Implementation of a Flow to inject these values into the GAIA platform • NodeRED • GAIA plugin Green Awareness in Action

Pre- and post-activity surveys: Overview of some key results • More preparedness for action • 3/4 of the students tried to change their everyday habits to save energy • 3/4 of the students would advise or tell someone off if they saw them wasting energy • 2/3 of the students actively try to stay informed about energy and environmental problems • 24.5% increase in willingness and motivation to stay informed • Most common action: switching off the lights • Most common difficulty: the power of habit and the time pressure of everyday routine

Pre- and post-activity surveys: Overview of some key results • A positive evaluation of all aspects of the GAIA experience • 3/4 of the students liked the GAIA activities • 3/4 of the students thought they had learned about energy through the GAIA activities • Overall, positive stance towards all GAIA activities as resource for learning about energy • Most positively evaluated: GAIA Challenge • Many students would like to do more activities like those of GAIA at school next year in order to learn more about saving energy.
