The document presents a method for recognizing facial expressions despite occlusions by focusing on local facial regions and utilizing the Uniform Local Binary Pattern (LBP) for feature extraction. Using template matching with a Chi-square distance classifier, the proposed method achieved a high recognition rate on the Jaffe database, demonstrating robustness against occlusions affecting different facial parts like the forehead, eyes, nose, and mouth. The results indicate that specific facial parts play varying roles in expression recognition, with the mouth being particularly significant in the identified cases.
