Notes # 4.6: Skimming and Scanning
Skimming and scanning are reading techniques that use rapid eye movement and
keywords to move quickly through text.
SKIMMING
Skimming is reading quickly to find the general overview of the passage.
HOW TO SKIM:
1. Read the title.
2. Read the introduction or the first paragraph.
3. Read the first sentence of every other paragraph.
4. Read the summary or last paragraph.
SCANNING
Scanning is reading quickly to find specific details within the passage.
HOW TO SCAN:
1. Think of the specific information you are looking for.
2. Anticipate how the answer will appear. For example, if you were only
looking for a certain DATE, you would quickly read the paragraph looking
only for DATES.
3. Use headings that will help you identify which sections might contain the
information you are looking for.
