3. Skimming and Scanning are
reading strategies that use rapid eye
movement and keywords to move
quickly through text for slightly
different purposes.
How do they differ?
4. SKIMMING is a reading strategy
that uses rapid eye movement
and keywords to move quickly
through the text for a purpose
like determining only main
ideas within a passage and
author’s intention.
5. In skimming, do NOT closely read every
word, but focus on the introduction,
chapter summaries, first and last
sentences of paragraphs, bold words,
and text features. Skimming is extracting
the essence of the author’s main
message rather than the finer points.
6. WHY SKIM?
1.You need the “big picture” or main
points when you are reading.
Skimming as a form of previewing can help you better
comprehend what you read. You will become better at
determining what parts of the text are most important and you
will understand the text’s overall points.
2.You have to make the most
of your time.
Reading takes time and sometimes you, as a reader, have no
time to do extensive and long reading. With skimming, you will
be able to cover vast amounts of material more quickly.
7. 3.You need to review the text you have read
before.
Skimming is also an efficient way to refresh your memory of
large amounts of material you have read (for example, you go
through your notes before an exam). Skimming a text that
you have already read helps you recall content and structure.
Examples of Skimming:
• The Newspaper – to quickly get the general
news of the day
• Magazines – to quickly discover which articles
you would like to read in more detail
• Business and Travel Brochures – to quickly
get informed
8. SCANNING
Scanning is a reading
technique used to find
specific facts quickly. In
scanning, the reader has
a question in mind and
reads a passage only to
find the answer, ignoring
unrelated information.
9. HOW TO SCAN?
1. State the specific information you
are looking for.
2. Try to anticipate how the answer will
appear and what cues you might
use to help you locate the answer.
For example, if you were looking
for a certain date, you would
quickly read the paragraph
looking only for numbers.
3. Selectively read and skip through
sections of the passage.
