2. What is Fundraising?
Fundraising is the process of gathering contributions by engaging individuals, businesses,
family, charitable organisations or government agencies.
The contributions gathered can range from time, finances, skills and talents and physical
donations e.g clothes, food, toys and books. This is dependant on what project you are
fundraising for.
P.s: fundraising is not only for non- profits but can also be done by businesses as they
solicit investors and for political campaigns.
3. Types of Fundraising.
❖ Crowd funding- use of crowdfunding platforms. This gives you a wider platform for you tell
your impact story and get people to contribute. E.g Mchanga, global giving.
❖ Grants and proposals- respond to bids that have been advertised or casting your net to
different funders who you have researched and seen that they fit well with your project.
❖ Sales- creating or getting products you can sell for you to raise money.
❖ Direct solicitation- this is where you ask for donations directly to individuals.
❖ Corporate partnerships- this can be full funding or partial funding.
❖ Events- having your focus on special days as your fundraising strategy. For example Giving
tuesday, bonus day
4. Why Fundraise?
❖ Your why is your compass to direct you and your team on steps to take.
❖ Be clear on your why from the word go and communicate with your team clearly.
5. Where and when will you
fundraise?
❖ Where will the fundraising happen? Will you have it in school, online?
❖ Have timelines set for when the fundraising will happen. This can be informed by
different aspects of the project, particularly the goal.
6. Who?
❖ Who are you targeting with your fundraising? This will inform your how to structure
the message and what channels of communication to use.
❖ Who will be in charge of the fundraising?
7. HOW?
❖ This is basically which medium will you use to fundraise?
❖ Will you use event, crowdfunding, sales. Research on which avenue works best for
you.

❖ Introduction: Who are you as an organisation? Who is the team
behind the work done?
❖ What problem are you seeking to solve?
❖ What is your solution?
❖ How do you plan to execute the solutions you are providing? If
possible have a breakdown of how the program will run, mention the
timelines.
❖ Why you? Keep in mind you have other people doing the same thing,
clearly bring out why you are best suited to execute the project.
❖ What is your ask? Do you have a budget?
❖ How does the funder benefit?
❖ Research! Research! Research!
9. Tips to remember….
❖ People give to people, have and maintain good relationships. Your
network is your net worth.
❖ Do not be afraid to ask, the worst that can happen is getting a no.
❖ The document you send seek funding is your first impression, let it be
a lasting impression.
❖ Develop a network and donor map.
