Public funding opportunities: Considerations for when applying for funding?
Considerations
Does it match the focus of the fund?
e.g. Innovation, Women & youth,
Campaign, Climate adaptation,
Community upliftment
Is it specific about activities it will
fund?
e.g. capital investment, seed funding,
project management, research, trial
Scale and budget
e.g. budget ceiling, exchange rate,
match-funding, in-kind contributions,
scalability, realistic budgets, time
(length & release of funds)
Partnerships
e.g. NGO status, academia,
specialists, supporters
Location
e.g. local, regional, national, country-
partnerships, global
Terms & Conditions
e.g. deliverables & outputs, log-
frames, IP, Trademarks, ROI,
extensions, dissemination, M&E
Public funding opportunities: Writing more successful proposals
• Show how the project proposed is aligned with
national/regional priorities e.g. UN SDGs
• Include information on scalability, replication and
sustainability, how it takes into account existing tools or
activities (so not to "reinvent the wheel")
• What is the basis for the project – previous activity, facts
or research (shouldn’t be standalone)
• How does the project (even a small-scale one) fits in the
bigger picture, how it benefits its target group, also in
the long-run
• Have clear log-frame and objectives to show clearly
what the project is trying to achieve, who it is targeting
and what the final output and outcomes will be
• Adhere to the word limit, if no limit, writing too much is
usually not taken well (use graphics to simplify
processes)
• Show sources of any data or quotes, and provide
examples, stories or quotes to illustrate your current or
proposed outcomes.
