This document outlines the syllabus for a six-week online certification course in fundamentals of online teaching. The course will take place from June 5 to July 16, 2016 and be facilitated by Natalie Parker. Participants will learn how to design, manage, and teach effective online courses. They must complete weekly discussion posts and assignments, and attend two mandatory workshops, to receive a Fundamentals of Online Teaching Certificate.

Course Name Fundamentals of Online Teaching
Location
Online. One face-to-face session will take place in the CETL
computer lab (Room 114 in the West Library).
Course Description
Faculty who wish to teach online or hybrid classes at Texas Wesleyan University
must obtain certification. Certification is a two-part process. Participants take a
six-week online class covering the fundamentals of online teaching. Participants
also complete two mandatory, one-hour workshops (one workshops is face-to-
face; one is offered as a virtual conference call). Participants who complete the
online course assignments and attend the mandatory workshops receive a
Fundamentals of Online Teaching Certificate from the CETL.

Course Objectives
Week 1: Participants will learn how to design and manage an effective
online/hybrid class.
Week 2: Participants will explore methods of assessing learning online and how
to discourage academic dishonesty in a virtual environment.
Week 3: Participants will learn how to use the Phases of Engagement framework
to foster online community and engagement.
Week 4: Participants will create a communication strategy.
Participants will learn how to grade assignments using BlackBoard
rubrics and how to track student progress using the Retention Center.
Week 5: Participants will plan collaborative assignments.
Week 6: Participants will learn what skills and information online students need to
succeed.
Required Text
Required readings are provided within each course module. No textbook
required.

Reliable access to an internet connection
Timely participation in each week’s discussion forum
Attendance at two one-hour workshops
Due Date Policies
The CETL understands that the priority of Texas Wesleyan faculty is their current
teaching assignments. We strongly recommend that you work through the course
according to the provided schedule, including posting on the discussion board
and submitting assignments by the assigned due dates. To receive certification
to teach online and hybrid courses at the University, all course work must be
completed within three days of the last class date.
Evaluation and Grading
Certification is achieved by completing all course assignments.
Some assignments in the course have been set up as graded to illustrate
Blackboard’s capabilities or to facilitate self-assessment.

Attendance Policy
Attendance at the two workshops is mandatory. Certification will not be granted
until missed sessions have been made up as individual consultations with Lisa
Hammonds or Natalie Parker. Email or call the facilitator to arrange make-up
sessions.
