Meaning of Human Resource Management
Human resource management (HRM) is the practice of recruiting,
hiring, deploying and managing an organization's employees. HRM is
often referred to simply as human resources (HR).
A company or organization's HR department is usually responsible for
creating, putting into effect and overseeing policies governing workers
and the relationship of the organization with its employees.
Definition of Human Resource Management
“Edwin Flippo defines- Human Resource Management as “planning, organizing, directing,
controlling of procurement, development, compensation, integration , maintenance and
separation of human resources to the end that individual, organizational and social objectives
are achieved.”
“According to Decenzo and Robbins, “Human Resource Management is concerned with the
people dimension” in management. Since every organization is made up of people, acquiring
their services, developing their skills, motivating them to higher levels of performance and
ensuring that they continue to maintain their commitment to the organization is essential to
achieve organsational objectives. This is true, regardless of the type of organization –
government, business, education, health or social action”.
Functions of Human Resource Management
I . Managerial Functions
1.Planning
One of the primary function where number & type of employees needed to accomplish organizational goals are
determined.
2. Organizing
Task is allocated to every member as per their skills and activities are integrated towards a common goal.
3.Staffing
HR manager is concerned, he/ she is required to recruit, select, train, place, compensate, promote and retire the
personnel of the organisation at the appropriate time in a manner most conducive for accomplishing the
objectives of the enterprise.
4. Directing
This includes activating employees at different levels and making them contribute maximum towards
organizational goal.
5. Controlling
performance of an employee is checked, verified and compared with goals. If actual
performance is found deviated from the plan, control measures are taken.

II . Operative Functions
1.Employment
a) job Analysis
Describing nature of the job like qualification, skill, work experience required for specific job position is another important operative
task.
b) HR Planning
It is the first step of human resource management. HRP is a process through which the company makes an assessment of the there is
excess or shortage of staff and prepares plans and policies to deal with them according present manpower-the number of people
employed, number of post vacant.
c) Recruitment
Hiring is a process which brings pool of prospective candidates who can help organization achieve their goals and allows
managements to select right candidates from the given pool.
d) Selection
Selection is the process of choosing a qualified person for specific role who can successfully deliver valuable contributions to the
organization. The term selection can be applied to many aspects of the process, such as recruitment, hiring, and acculturation.

1.Employment
e) Placement
Placement is the process of assigning a specific job to each one of the selected candidates. ADVERTISEMENTS:
In very simple words placement means sending the newly employed person to some department for work. ...
Matching the requirements of the job with the qualifications of a candidate is the essence of placement.
f) Induction and Orientation
Induction is a short-term event, usually completed on a new employee's first day. Orientation is the process to
familiarize new hires with company policy and guidelines. It's all about compliance and getting new hires up to
speed on processes, paperwork, and the company's general administrative

a) Performance Appraisal
Performance appraisal is a systematic evaluation of the employee's present job capabilities and also his potential for growth and
development by his superiors.
b) Training
Training is the process for providing required skills to the employee for doing the job effectively, skillfully and qualitatively
c) Management Development
Management Development is a systematic process of training and growth by which managerial personnel gain and apply skill,
knowledge, altitude and insights to manage the work in their organisation effectively and efficiently
d) Career Planning and Development

a) job Evaluation
Job evaluation is the systematic process of determining the relative value of different jobs in an organization. The goal of job
evaluation is to compare jobs with each other in order to create a pay structure that is fair, equitable, and consistent for everyone.
b) Wage and Salary Administration
c) Incentives
d) Bonus
e) Fringe Benefits

f) Social security Measures
“Social security means the security of an income to take the place of earnings when they are interrupted by unemployment,
sickness or accident to provide for the retirement through old age, to provide against loss of support by death of another person and
to meet exceptional expenditure connected with birth, death .
4. Human Relations
A human relation is the relationship between human resources of the organization. It incorporates management-employees,
employees-employees relationship.
