Functionalist Perspective
Sociologists analyze and interpret social phenomena at different levels and from different
perspectives. Sociologists study everything from specific behaviors on the micro level to
generalized, big pictures on the macro level. Each palpable explanation and theoretical
generalization of society and social behavior that sociologists provide, contribute to the
understanding of complex behaviors we demonstrate everyday. Pioneering sociologists introduced a
broad conceptualization of the fundamentals of society. These views are now the basis of which
today's theoretical perspectives are formed. (Contributors at CliffsNotes, 2016) A theoretical
perspective, a set of assumptions about reality that demise the questions we ask and support the ...

Functionalist Perspective According to the Functionalist Perspective, also known as functionalism,
each aspect of society is interdependent and the parts its people have in it all contribute to society's
functioning as a whole. Largely based on the works of Herbert Spencer, Emile Durkheim, Talcott
Parsons, and Robert Merton, functionalism states that society is a system of interconnected parts that
rely on each other to maintain balance and social equilibrium. Functionalism emphasizes the
interconnectedness of society by focusing on the relationships and influences present in each part of
society. Terms as functional and dysfunctional are often used by sociologists focusing on
functionalism. Elements are said to be functional if they contribute to social stability and
dysfunctional if they break the pattern of stability. (Crossman, 2017) Functionalists are described to
defend the status quo, avoid social change, and believe people cooperate to effect social order.
Functionalism addresses society as a whole by standards of norms, customs, traditions, and
institutions. While once criticized for failure to account for social change and ignoring systematic
inequalities that naturally produce tension and conflict. The functionalist theory easily allows for
specific macro–analyses of more contentious power imbalances while also permitting a

What are the Causes and Effects of poverty in the United States?
Jose Flores
Blackstone Academy Charter School
Are all Americans grateful for the things they have? What if Americans do not to have the proper
basic needs? Many Americans do face this situation and it is called poverty. The top three causes of
poverty in United States are lack of education, unemployment and the high cost of health insurance.
Americans can overcome the high rate of poverty and alleviate their struggles by maintaining and
furthering their education which will lead to higher paying jobs and with good medical benefits. In
the state of Rhode Island, 15% of the population is facing the struggle of poverty, based on Rhode

2011. P.11). Having the flood at this period of time was a good thing. It put many Rhode Islanders
back to work. However, many small business are closing down in RI, causing many people to lose
their jobs. This is due to the high taxes, fees and regulations that small businesses face if they want
to operate in Rhode Island. All these factors in Rhode Island have impacted the high unemployment
rate thus leading to the high state of poverty. Another factor that will lead one into poverty is the
inability to afford health insurance. A journalist from the Providence Journal, Dujardin, mentioned
that "Rhode Island has an average of 18,000 children 17 years of age and younger who were without
health coverage between 2007 and 2009, up from the 16,000 average recorded three years earlier"
(Richard C. Dujardin 1). It is not required by law that people should purchase their own health
insurance in RI. Not purchasing health insurance can cause a very serious situation. For example, if
one were to be in a car accident or become ill, not having the medical insurance, they will have to
pay large amount of money out of their own pockets. Lastly, one of the biggest causes of poverty is
lack of education. In the United States, everyone is entitled to a free and appropriated public
education. However, not many take advantage of that opportunity. In Rhode Island, 91% of high
school students attend school but only 76% of them graduate out of the whole state. In Central

If I Didn 't Grow Up in the Middle Class
Growing up in the city of Brook Park, a nice little suburb located in northeast Ohio. I never really
imagined how life could be differently if I grew up in a different social class. Up to this point in my
life, my family has mainly been a "middle class" family. Money isn 't thrown around in my family
like its nothing, but we 've had a very good living style due to the hard work of my parents. Many
times growing up my parents always told me to be grateful for what we have and to never complain
because there 's people out there who would love to have what we have as a family. If I lived in the
poverty living level instead of the middle class, the social part of my life would be different in many

As a child I was lucky enough to have this experience with my family but I may not have had this
opportunity if it wasn 't for growing up in the middle class. Vacations are very expensive, especially
when they are only a week long and families spend thousands of dollars on them. That would be a
lot of extra money for families to come up with, especially families who aren 't in the higher low
class or middle class and "annual income per adult averages between $18,000–$30,000 per year."
(Cliffsnotes) Not having those vacation experiences would be a huge loss and I wouldn't have had
some of my best childhood experiences with my family.
"Show me your friends, I 'll show you your future". This quote is one of my favorite quotes of all
time, which I heard from a speech given by Jim Tressel.I 've been surrounded around great friends
my whole life, and I believe they take a big part in why I have a pretty bright future. They have
always been great influences around me, and are always telling me what the right and wrong things
are to do. Friends are like a second family to most people, if you aren 't with your family your with
you friends. Its very important to have a good stable friend group that help lead you into the right
path. Growing up in my town there was the fair share of drugs and violence but not as bad as some
neighborhoods where the price of living is low. If I were to grow up in a different social class, I

Technocracy In The Book Thief Essay
Ethnocracy is a kind of government in which it is ruled by one race or national group

people ruling it leads to the detriment of someone else. An example of this is 1700–1900 hundreds
United States of America. Most people would not think that the US is a technocracy, after all we
have such a wide range of people and cultures coexisting here, and while that is true there was one
group of people who got the short end of the stick; blacks. The reason why you can call the US an

This book is set in Germany in the 1940, A time were Jews were being chased down and set to
concentration camps, were most would die. The book thief shows just how terrifying it was for jews
and epeople who tried to hide them through the eyes of the main character Liesel, a German girl
whose parents decide to hide a jew in their basement. While the atrocities the Germans would do
was not the main focus of the book it does show at points just how corrupt the government was and
ow that affected the people. A good example of this was towards the middle of the book where
Liesel's family find out that their house was going to be searched. Out of fear they send Max the jew
they were hiding away, only to find out that they were not going to get searched. However because
of how they sent him off they could not just go find Max and hide him again, leading Max to be
caught and sent to a concentration camp. When Liesle saw him walking down the street in a parade

time, but due to how everyone perceived and treated the jews and those who help them she ended up

Similarities Between Animal Farm And 1984 By George Orwell
The two novels Animal Farm and 1984 are both taught and studied in my school at different stages,
Animal Farm is taught in M3 (Year 9) and 1984 is taught over D1 (Year 12). By selecting two works
by the same author, there is no issue of one of the works not being acclaimed or recognized. In terms
of Chall's Stages of Literacy Development, Animal Farm would be taught to students between

The Philosophy Of Plato 's Philosophy
Ethics? Philosophy? What do these two words mean? Living life the right way? Always doing what
parents instruct? Some people walk through the motions of life and never fully understand what
living is really about–it is more than paying bills, earning an education, and having a family. By
definition, philosophy is: "a search for a general understanding of values and reality by chiefly
speculative rather than observational means".1 Humankind has studied philosophy for many years
trying to figure out the complex meaning of life, an example being Plato one of the greatest Greek
philosophers. Philosophy can be very complicated, but life is a beautiful thing (Thesis statement).

Socrates did this to show them the difference between truth and what they felt to be true; he would
help them see the truth despite their ideas possibly being incorrect 9 (Ethics for life, 13). Most of the
time people would not be able to stand firm on their beliefs 10(Britannica). This brought hatred
toward Socrates. Eventually they tried Socrates, found him guilty of impiety and demeaning the
youth, and executed him in 399 BCE. The reason why the Greeks thought Socrates was corrupting
the youth is because he said the gods of Greece were unreliable and lacking 11(Ancient). Plato was
emotionally affected by the life and death of Socrates. Socrates work influence Plato so much, he
surrounded himself with members of Socrates and became a member himself. Plato's work was
generally stated as "Socratic", because of how similar his work was to Socrates 12(Britannica).
Number two, was the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta. Plato served in the Athen's
military for a short time between 409 and 404 B.C. The Spartans won the war, so the Greeks
Democracy changed to Spartan Oligarchy (Biography). As time went on, Oligarchy ended and
Democracy was restored. Plato was about to take a chance on making a career as a politician, but
after Socrates execution in 399 B.C., he turned his life to study philosophy (Biography). Following
Socrates death, Plato journeyed for twelve years to Greece, studying mathematics with

Catch-22, by Joseph Heller
Catch 22 is a story about the different personalities that can be involved in a war. Out of all the
different archetypes, the three I've chosen are John Yossarian, Albert Tappman, and Milo
Minderbinder, although, not in that order. The first character being analyzed is Yossarian, the
unwilling hero of this book. Although the book labels Yossarian as the main character, he constantly
tries to coward out of going to battle. The second character that will be described is Milo
Minderbinder, the archetypical business person of Catch 22.He runs the camp mess hall and controls
what everyone in the camp is buying, selling, and eating. Milo is constantly trying to control or

It was like seditious and insidious too, and like socialist, suspicious, fascist and Communist. It was
an odious, alien, distasteful name, a name that just did not inspire confidence. It was not at all like
such clean, crisp, honest, American names such as Catchcart, Peckem and Dreedle." (Heller 210)
The quote above describes the relationship with Colonel Cathcart, in which Cathcart has a worrying
doubt about Yossarian and his role in the squadron. Yossarian complains to Doc Daneeka about
Colonel Cathcart's dictum regarding the mission count during every visit to the medical tent.
Cathcart's opinion about Yossarian also dawns upon the other men who start to wonder about the
man with that name and who he actually is. One of the main points within the story is when the
soldiers question Yossarian during the death of Lt. Mudd, whom the men continuously call "the dead
man in Yossarian's tent" (Heller 166). A character that changes Yossarian completely about war is
Snowden. After Snowden's death, Yossarian is given a medal of honor for fighting through that
battle, but unlike the other men, Yossarian shows up in a disorderly fashion. He realizes that he
doesn't want to be in a war–like atmosphere anymore and starts to long for his trips throughout Italy.
It is after these trips that Yossarian tries to weasel his way out of the squadron by feigning
sicknesses and pleading for Doc Daneeka to claim him insane. "Just because you're paranoid doesn't

Characterization, Symbolism, and Irony in The Scarlet Letter
The Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is a novel about a young woman who commits
adultery and is forced to wear the letter A, which symbolizes adultery, on her chest. In this novel,
Hawthorne includes many symbols to display hidden meanings, including character symbols to
wake up the reader. Irony is an important element as well, used to reveal the hypocrisy of
humankind. The Scarlet Letter is a unique blend of characters, irony and symbolism. Hester Prynne
is first described in the scaffold scene as, "tall, with a figure of perfect elegance on a large scale. She

Arthur Dimmesdale is a character of depression and darkness. He is young, pale has large,
melancholy eyes and a tremulous mouth, suggesting great sensitivity (Cliffsnotes). He is a well–
known, well–educated, Puritan minister, and has a high reputation. There is no doubt that he is
devoted to God, passionate in his religion, and effective in the pulpit (Cliffsnotes). In the beginning
of the novel, Dimmesdale is pictured as a good, quiet man, and the townspeople admire him. He
becomes very ill, and the doctor, Roger Chillingworth, cannot determine what is causing his
sickness for quite a while. Finally, the novel exposes that Dimmesdale is sick because of his horrible
guilt. It would seem that he would never commit any significant sin, yet the novel reveals that
Dimmesdale is Hester Prynne's lover. Dimmesdale, Hester, and Pearl all meet one day in the forest,
and they plan to take a ship to England, where Hester was born. When they were about to board the
ship, Chillingworth was spotted standing on it. Dimmesdale sees him and decides that he cannot
take it anymore. His guilt was, literally, killing him. He presents himself on the scaffold and
announces to the town that he was Hester's lover. However, the crowd does not believe him and
thinks that the devil was forcing him to become crazy. Dimmesdale's guilt finally gets the best of
him, and he dies on the scaffold. Roger Chillingworth is a man deficient in human warmth

American Football: the modern day Spartan agōgē. As early as the 6th century BCE Sparta
mandated military training for all males ages 7 and up. Renowned throughout history as the ultimate

Why can't we move on from this ancient rite? The simple answer? The most powerful countries in

Evolution has plateaued.

Sociological Theory Of The Education System

Education
The education system. This is a topic for everybody and everyone up next. Everyone has gotten or is
going to get an education in his or her lifetime, and the system is flawed. Many theorists believe that
education has its ups and downs. More like, a rollercoaster effect at this point, but it brings the
question of when can we get the smooth road trip feel; for our kids and our teachers. Education puts
into perceptive how out of control necessities can get. A lot of parents are losing money and sleep
over choosing a school for their children. Using three theories', we can try and sway an audience to
peruse better legislation to amend the situation, that effects everyone. Using structural
functionalism, we can see the very positive and beneficial side of the education system. The reasons
that many people don't want to change the system because if "it ain't broke don't fix it". Using social
solidarity is a good way to make students fell they are part of something bigger (revisesociology). A
founder of functionalism Emile Durkheim argued that school was a small society that we test
ourselves in before entering the real society. Using many English and History classes we can see
ourselves as one some sort of shared image in a way (revisesociology). There are many other
benefits of the education system like teaching us core beliefs and values that will help us exceed in

Boundaries In Frankenstein Essay
Introduction Boundaries are important as they indicate a limit a person not supposed to cross, it
important that people respect boundaries as once boundaries are crossed, it can affect the

consequences. In regards to this assignment we will be looking at consequences of challenging

Dicken's Hard Times
Dickens' Hard Times
"Now, what I want is, Facts. Teach these boys and girls nothing but Facts. Facts alone are wanted in
life." (Dickens, 1854, p.1)
With these beginning sentences of the novel "Hard Times", Charles Dickens has made readers doubt
whether it is true that facts alone are wanted in life. This question leads to the main theme of the
story, fact against fancy, that author has never been written this kind of plot in his other stories
before. In fact, Hard Times is considered as "the unlike–the–rest of Dickens' works" (Collins, 1992,
p.xi) because the plot is not involved the social problems in Victorian Age such as poverty or child
labor, but it is "an abstract that exalts instinct above reason." (Collins, 1992, p.xiii) ... Show more

In order to help his son, Mr. Gradgrind eventually has to ask Sleary's circus, who he never favour

stories such as an impossible love between Louisa and Mr. Harthouse, a secret life of Mr.

impressive critiques from many admirers. The outstanding critique is one from Dr F. R. Leavis in
1948 that says"... of all Dickens' works the one that has all the strength of his genius, together with a
strength no other of them can show–that of a completely serious work of art..." (Collin, 1992, p.xii).
These three facts of this novel even make it more astonishing. A good novel not only gives reader an
appreciation but also provides some points that need to be analyzed through critical thinking
process. So does the Hard Times, it is a valuable novel that I favor and have critical reflections on
the Dickens' satire, the well–rounded characters and the comparison on the different abstract ideas. I

Themes in John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men Essay
John Steinbeck, an American novelist, is well–known for his familiar themes of depression and
loneliness. He uses these themes throughout a majority of his novels. These themes come from his
childhood and growing up during the stock market crash. A reader can see his depiction of his
childhood era. In Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck shows the prominent themes of loneliness, the need
for relationships, and the loss of dreams in the 1930s through the novels' character. Lennie Small, a
mentally impaired man, is first introduced to us traveling with George. George, however, is not

George Milton is a hard– working man who travels beside Lennie, yet he would rather travel by
himself. He would not have to worry about anyone but himself. He travels with Lennie, and we
often find him telling Lennie how much better off he could be without him. One simple reaction to
Lennie sets George off on a rant enough to say, God a'mighty, if I was alone I could live so easy. I
could go get a job an' work, an' no trouble. No mess at all, and when the end of the month come I
could take my fifty bucks and go into town and get whatever I want. Why, I could stay in a cathouse
all night. I could eat any place I want, hotel or any place, and order any damn thing I could think of.
An' I could do all that every damn month. Get a gallon of whisky, or set in a pool room and play
cards or shoot pool... An' whatta I got ... I got you! You can't keep a job and you lose me ever' job I

shows that George wants to be alone but does not truly want to be lonely. Lennie is George's
responsibility. George views Lennie as a brother, friend, and partner in crime. Without Lennie,
George is lonely but he knows that he saves Lennie from his own personal misery in the end.

lonely after he takes that friendship away from himself. After killing Lennie, there is a shift in

Religion is the name given to a "relationship with God, and different groups of people have different
Gods and belief systems" (Terhart & Schulze, 2008). Today there are 313 religions and

Therefore this essay will describe how the characters, setting and themes in the Scarlet letter
comment on the religion in America by exploring the scene of puritan morality, scaffold and through
the interpretation of the Scarlet Letter "A".
According Puritan moral values, one is guilty of adultery if married man or woman had a sexual
relationship with a person who is not their wife or husband. The situation becomes worse when
women bear an illegitimate child and such behavior is considered as one of the sinful acts in the
Puritan society. The protagonist and the bearer of the scarlet letter "A" signify that Hester Prynne is
an adulterer. Hester was married to an elderly scholar, Roger Chillingworth who sent her ahead to
America to live but never followed her. While waiting for him, she had an affair with a Puritan
minister named Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, after which gave birth to Pearl. Hester giving birth to
Pearl became an attention of that Puritan society and she was humiliated in the public where she

Essay on The Importance of Heritage in "Everyday Use"
In "Everyday Use " by Alice Walker the exact setting is never revealed and therefore, can only be
guessed, but it has been guessed that the story takes place on a country side in Georgia. At one point
in the story Augusta is mentioned. The time is also estimated to be during the Civil Rights
Movement around the year of 1973. Mrs. Johnson, along with her two daughters, reside in a small
three room house, and take pride in there small yard. As Maggie and Dee grow older they start to
realize how important their heritage, and family heirlooms are, Maggie in particular. Maggie has
made her mother promise to give her the quilts when she becomes old enough. However, Dee wants

She is beautiful, confident and comes across as insensitive and arrogant. Dee argues with her mother
that she wants the family quilts that had been tucked away in a chest. The ones her mother had
promised to her younger sister Maggie. Dee tells her mother that Maggie is naïve enough to put their
precious family heirlooms to "everyday use", (www.enotes.com) when she knew they belonged in a
special showcase for people to see. Maggie was always the quiet type who preferred to be at home.
Maggie "is a figure of purity, uncorrupted by selfishness or complex emotional needs"
(www.sparknotes.com) who wishes to be untouched by the outside world. The family quilts that
Maggie were supposed to inherit were used as symbolism in the story. The quilts symbolize the
"bonds between women of different generations and their enduring legacy",(www.enotes.com) and
"culture and heritage". (www.suite101.com) Maggie understands the history and relationship tied
into each and every quilt whereas Dee does not. Maggie and her mama think the quilts "are pieces of
living history, documents in fabric that chronicle the lives of the various generations and trials".
Mama treasures these quilts because she considers them "personal history, one of her few treasures".
Maggie knows the quilts are crafts from her grandmother, and that there is no way to set a financial
amount to their worth. The yard also carries symbolism. It symbolizes a private places where

Milo is constantly trying to control or
manipulate the economies around him, and after he gets a large commission ... Show more content

What Is The Relationship Between Mary Shelley And...
Mary Shelley and her novel, Frankenstein
Mary Shelley, wife of Percy Shelley, became a highly respected household name after she wrote and
published her famous novel, Frankenstein, during The Romantic Period. Mary Shelley indirectly
reflects her backstory and The Romantic Period through Frankenstein, and even impacts The
Romantic Period through her novel. Evidence of both the reflection of The Romantic Period and Ms.
Shelley's impact on it are found in her background, the time period itself (as well as modern times)
and in Frankenstein. Mary Shelley was born on August 30, 1797, and died on February 1, 1851
(Biography.com Editors). She grew up in London, England, but spent two years in Scotland with her

One of these events was hating her home life because she felt her step–mother resented her and her
father's relationship; which in her eyes, led to her being excluded from getting a formal education
when her stepsister was getting one (Biography.com Editors). This resulted in Mary staying in
Scotland for two whole years with her father's acquaintance and his family, and then later fleeing
England with Percy (Biography.com Editors) (Cliffsnotes Editors). The other very important event
that affected Mary's life, but especially Frankenstein, was the loss of a child before writing her
famous novel (Biography.com Editors) (Cliffsnotes Editors). It's very clear that in Ms. Shelley's
book, Dr. Frankenstein is trying to resurrect someone from the dead; having knowledge on Mary's
background actually leads many people to believe that this idea of resurrection is coming from her
wanting to bring back the only child she had ever birthed (Biography.com Editors)(Cliffsnotes
Editors). Mary fits in very naturally with the ideals of The Romantic Period; Frankenstein, her most
famous novel, clearly reflects this. In Frankenstein, the creature is rejected from society because of
his grotesque appearance, lack of manners, and lack of intelligence. The creature being rejected by
society shows that as a romantic, Mary Shelley viewed the society in which she lived as close–
minded and judgmental (Cliffsnotes Editors). Mary Shelley significantly contributed to The

Social Interaction In Human Society
Social interaction is what make up our human society. Through interaction, we socialize with our
family, friends, people in the community to strengthen our relationship with each other. Through
socialization, human society is established and become the foundation for everything inside the
society. Our society is more complex than any society found in nature, but it's not perfect nor ideal
for every member inside the society. Thus, the thought of an ideal society as well as how to achieve
that society is very fascinating among sociologists, whose role is to solve social problems and
develop this theory. Human society is composed of multiple factors: individuals who work together
in the same environment and contribute to the society; cultures which were passed down by
previous generations and become the foundation for the future in spirituals, values, beliefs and
norms; materials that people consume or use to develop society and improve their live (agriculture,
infrastructure...); social organizations and institutions which regulate the behavior of people like
laws, religions, government, religions...to help guide them down the path accepted by the majority.
All these components work together to maintain order, and thrive human society forward, eventually
lead to an ideal society where every individual can have their need fulfills, and most of the social
problems solved. As human society advance forward, so will the structure of the society. There have
been many type of societies

Character Analysis Of Okonkwo
In Things Fall Apart, a novel written by Chinua Achebe, the character of Okonkwo is a valuable
warrior of the Umuofia clan, a lower Nigerian tribe that is part of an association of nine villages in
Africa. Okonkwo is troubled by the wrongdoings of his father, Unoka, due to him leaving many
village debts unsettled. Unoka was considered to be a cowardly and prodigal person, who later died
and was shamed by the public. As a result of all this, Okonkwo becomes a clansman, warrior,
farmer, and family provider. Okonkwo is the father of his son Nwoye, who he finds to be lazy.
Okonkwo is concerned that Nwoye will fail just like his father did. Additionally, since Okonkwo
hated how gentle his father was towards other people, he decides to be controlling of his wives and
children, and insensitive as well. As the years go by, Okonkwo becomes a very hostile person,
becoming aggravated over the slightest annoyance. One day, the clan settles an argument with a
nearby village on the sacrificing of a 15–year–old boy named Ikemefuna, who lives with Okonkwo's
family for three years. During the time that Ikemefuna lived with Okonkwo's family, Okonkwo
eventually begins to treat Ikemefuna respectfully, and Ikemefuna soon begins to call Okonkwo
''father.'' After the three years pass, an elder from the tribe, Ezeudu, tells Okonkwo that Ikemefuna
had to be killed, and suggested to not be a part of his sacrifice since Ikemefuna was so fond of him.

Lord Of The Flies Character Analysis
Our Split Personalities
According to Fred, a psychologist, our mind is split into three different personalities, also known as
Ego, Id, and Superego. Id acts according to pleasure principles. Ego to reality principles, and
superego follows society principles. These personalities are also known as preconscious, conscious
and unconscious(Staff ). ego , Superego, and Id are displayed in the book "Lord of the Flies" by
William Golding. William Golding had a dark view of human beings as he believed all humans were
selfish and evil, who would do anything to save themselves regardless of the consequences. ¨Lord of
the flies" is about British schoolboys that were evacuating during a war, whose' plane had crashed in
an island. With no adults, rules or anything you see these boys transform from civilizated boys into
savages. You see how Jack displaces Id " throughout the book.
Id is the part of our mind that revolves around pleasure principles. It doesn't feel for others but for
themselves. They do what they want. It does not know what is right and wrong. From the book "
Lord of the Flies" , Jack best represents this personality. From the beginning Jack shows his true
cruel side. All he wants to do is hunt and kill. He shows no interest in getting rescued as he ignores
Ralph's orders about finding shelter and keeping the fire going. Jack uses fear to control and make
them do as he says. He punishes those who go against him in any way ("Character Analysis Jack")

Analysis Of Mary Shelley 's ' Frankenstein '
Frankenstein was published over 200 years ago. Ever since it was published, it has been one of the
most famous books known to literature. History.com Staff states that this book, by 21–year–old
Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, is frequently called the world's first science fiction novel (History.com
Staff). According to Wikipedia, Shelley was an English novelist. She was born August 30th, 1797.
She died on February 1st, 1951 (Wikipedia). Shelley came up with the idea of Frankenstein as she
and her friends were making up scary stories, and the story ended up being one of our most famous
books today. The main character of the novel is Victor Frankenstein. Victor was also the narrator for
the majority of the novel. Victor was the oldest in his family, and adored knowledge. He studied at a
university called Ingolstadt and later, created a creature. Afraid of his work, Victor abandons his
creature and basically leaves him for dead. All the creature wants is to be loved, but it cannot happen
because everyone is afraid of his dreadful appearance. Enraged, the creature decides to get his
revenge. Robert Walton, a captain on a journey to discover the North Pole, decides to help Victor.
Walton explains his story in letters to his sister Margaret Saville. In his last letter, Walton
paraphrases the words of the creature. The creature stated "I, the miserable and the abandoned, am
an abortion, to be spurned at, and kicked, and trampled on." (Shelley, 2003).

Sula's relationship with Nel was another major factor in her maturation into a woman. Sula and Nel
were like each other's support systems (Bukisa). Throughout their childhood, Nel always supported
Sula and vice versa, even though they were extremely different. Nel was conservative and brought
up in a relatively stable home by a proper, lady–like, mother, the way their society expected, while
Sula was raised in a home where people constantly came and went, by a mother who slept with
different men on various occasions. These two completely different worlds were what drew these
two young girls to each other (Bukisa). They were opposite in more than just their upbringing. Sula
was rougher and tougher than Nel was, but her emotions were also inconsistent. Nel, on the other
hand, was quiet, and normally had a steady emotion (Bukisa). It was as if these two girls were each
one half of the same whole, making them inseparable. During their childhood, they shared
everything, including boyfriends. All of these factores contributed to Sula's personality and actions
as an adult. Sula as an adult had problems with love, recognizing boundaries, and fitting in. Sula

Drama Theories Of Antigone
Sophocles biography and drama connections
"Antigone" begins with the city state of thebes being attacked by the Argive army and during the
battle eticlies turns on his brother polyneices, and kills him then kills himself.
Polyneices is given a proper military burial. But eticlies body was not buried instead it was left in

Antigone heard about her brother's death, and that he was not to be buried and decided she was

An Analysis Of Okonkwo 's ' Things Fall Apart '
In Things Fall Apart the novel, Okonkwo was determined to be nothing like his father Unoka, this

throughout all nine villages of Umuofia. He was quick tempered, he did not like dealing with

Unoka's laziness and carelessness, the village had thought of him as a failure and a fool; he was a

already showed he is far from orthodox in his religion, and if he did not agree with the rules, he did
not abide by them. It is doubtful he would have felt the guilt and self loathing he did if his moral
expectations were not as high as they were, whether it was the law in his church or not. Another
inner quality that defines John Proctor is the value he holds to his good name. Proctor is a firm
believer in the fact that one's name is the only thing that remains after death, and what is done with
it while living can affect one's posterity for generations. This is the driving force behind his actions
in the final act of the play. At first, he felt no shame in lying to the court about his accusation of
witchcraft because he felt there was no more damage he could do to his reputation and that one more
sin would not make any difference. His attitude changed when he realized his confession would
mean blackening the name of those who already had died, and his sons would have to live with that
mark on their names. He knew he could not teach his sons ". . . to walk like

Fate In Shakespeare's The Tragedy Of Romeo And Juliet
Romeo and Juliet, the story of two ill–fated lovers. In Romeo and Juliet, there are some accidents
and bad choices, but ill–fate ultimately brings about the downfall of Romeo and Juliet because
Mercutio proclaims, "a plague on both your houses." , Romeo has a bad feeling before going to the
party, and Romeo's dream that Juliet finds him dead. However others might say that Romeo and
Juliet is mainly poor choices, for example Romeo only goes to the ball because he sees Rosaline's
name on the list. First, Romeo has a bad feeling about going to the Capulet's party. He doesn't want
to go because his dream told him not to. Then Mercutio gives the Queen Mab speech saying that she
makes you love a person, which can be described as it was fate to ... Show more content on

Before Mercutio dies, he proclaims "a plague o' both your houses!" (Shakespeare Act III, scene I,
line 59) "Mercutio's dying curse upon the houses resonates as the voice of fate itself." (cliffsnotes)
Later in the story we see this statement become fulfill with the deaths of Tybalt, Romeo, and Juliet.
"Romeo avenges Mercutio and kills Tybalt than saying 'O, I am fortune's fool'(Act 3, Scene 1, Line
98) and he realizes he is a helpless victim of fate" (summarized cliffsnotes). Last, we can see destiny
in Romeo's dreams. Romeo had a dream that Juliet finds him dead, as shown in Act V Scene I line 9,
"I dreamt my lady came and found me dead" (Shakespeare). Later in the Act Romeo buys poison,
then proceeds to kill himself in Juliet's tomb. When Juliet awakes from the sleeping potion she had,
she finds that Romeo is dead. Romeo's dream anticipates the final scene of the play when Juliet
awakes and finds Romeo dead than tries to kiss the poison from his lips (summarized cliffsnotes).
Romeo and Juliet is mainly shaped by fate. This can be seen through Romeo's bad feeling about
going to the party, the death of Mercutio, and Romeo's dreams. These events are foretelling the
futures of the character, however they do not know this. If Romeo and Juliet caught onto these
foretellings they may have been able to change the outcome of the story, but it was destiny that
decided their

Author Scott Kronick
"Dear Scott, you are about to embark on the ride of your life, so, buckle up dude," writes author
Scott Kronick in the opening line of a letter his younger self. "...When you have the chance to move
to China in 1995, jump at this. It will be an inflection point in your life you will not forget."
Kronick, CEO of Ogilvy Public Relations, Asia Pacific, the leading public relations consultancy in
Asia, has lived in China for nearly two decades, during which he's experienced tremendous social,
economic and personal change. The Lighter Side of China, while diminutive in weight, is more than
an autobiography or travelogue, it's Kronick's professionally refined "CliffsNotes" on how to
survive 20 years as a foreigner in modern China. They key to it all, to happiness in business and at
home, Kronick explains, is to continuously "seek to understand."
Organized into 25 short essays, Kronick's book uses humor and an ever–positive outlook to explain
life as both a laowai (foreign friend) and rare insider into Chinese culture, "I was a cultural klutz and
the more mistakes I made the more people laughed and I began to think that I was a tad funny. It is
that humor that I credit as the stimulant that has deepened my love for the experiences I have had in
this country..." In a brutally honest chapter titled Toilet Tales, Kronick recounts his anxiety and
embarrassment at having to use "squatty–pottys" –and it wasn't about being fussy. Knee surgery in
college made it extremely difficult for

Comparing Leslie In California, By Andre Dubus
Why is life so hard? What do we do to deserve these things that happen to us? No one deserves to be
hurt physically, mentally, or emotionally in life. Whether it's good or bad, life is going to happen. In
the stories, Leslie in California, written by Andre Dubus, and The Story of an Hour, written by Kate
Chopin, the characters in the stories are alike in some ways. Both Dubus and Chopin are an example
of someone who didn't deserve what life threw at them. According to TheFamousPeople website,
Dubus was married three times and had six children. He had four by his first wife, Patricia Lowe,
and two by his last wife, Peggy Rambach. As for Chopin, she was the only one of her four siblings
that lived past the age of twenty–five. They both hit a rough patch in their lives at a young age.
According to TheFamousPeople website, "Andre Dubus enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps upon his
graduation and served there for six years, eventually rising to the rank of captain." Dubus was
obviously going in the right direction with his life. To many people, Dubus at the time was
considered a hero. According to the CliffsNotes website, "Chopin grew up in a household dominated
by women: her mother, great–grandmother, and the female slaves her mother owned." On the
CliffsNotes website it says, Kate was born with the last name O'Flaherty. She married Oscar Chopin
in 1870, and he died in 1882. Which made her a widow who had to look after six kids. On
TheFamousPeople website it also says, "In July

Research Methods in Sociology and Anthropology
By
Western Governors University
Abstract
Sociology and Anthropology rely upon investigational and research techniques. While some of these
may be similar they also differ. Each discipline has its own philosophical justification for their
method but any and all approaches to study the society's culture require some degree of fieldwork.
A. Research Methods in Sociology Scientifically studying human society's development, origins and
organizations/institutions is defined as Sociology. (Wikipedia, 2013). The methods of analysis and ...

Experimental research concentrates on how and why something happens. It is the evaluation of how
an independent variable (a manipulated factor) affects a dependent variable (an observed factor).
The outcome can be affected by a number of elements; obtaining random and representative samples
of the study population, experimenter bias and extraneous variables.
Bias as defined by the expectations of the researcher of what should or should not happen
influencing the results. Lack of control on extraneous variables may interfere with the results; only
with careful control on extraneous variables can valid conclusions about the effects of specific
variables on other variables be drawn. (CliffNotes). The philosophical justification for survey
research is cost containment with a large volume of research. It is also one of the most efficient and
quick methods to gather large amounts of information. Data analysis can be completed in a short
period of time and generalization is better, particularly when the representative sample is of a
population. It also helps elimination of bias in result interpretation as subjects have the ability to
remain anonymous.
B. Research methods in Cultural Anthropology The study of cultural variation among humans and
collecting data regarding the impact of global economic and political processes on local cultural
realities is the cultural anthropology branch of anthropology. (Wikipedia, 2013).

Functionalist Perspective

  • 1. Functionalist Perspective Sociologists analyze and interpret social phenomena at different levels and from different perspectives. Sociologists study everything from specific behaviors on the micro level to generalized, big pictures on the macro level. Each palpable explanation and theoretical generalization of society and social behavior that sociologists provide, contribute to the understanding of complex behaviors we demonstrate everyday. Pioneering sociologists introduced a broad conceptualization of the fundamentals of society. These views are now the basis of which today's theoretical perspectives are formed. (Contributors at CliffsNotes, 2016) A theoretical perspective, a set of assumptions about reality that demise the questions we ask and support the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Functionalist Perspective According to the Functionalist Perspective, also known as functionalism, each aspect of society is interdependent and the parts its people have in it all contribute to society's functioning as a whole. Largely based on the works of Herbert Spencer, Emile Durkheim, Talcott Parsons, and Robert Merton, functionalism states that society is a system of interconnected parts that rely on each other to maintain balance and social equilibrium. Functionalism emphasizes the interconnectedness of society by focusing on the relationships and influences present in each part of society. Terms as functional and dysfunctional are often used by sociologists focusing on functionalism. Elements are said to be functional if they contribute to social stability and dysfunctional if they break the pattern of stability. (Crossman, 2017) Functionalists are described to defend the status quo, avoid social change, and believe people cooperate to effect social order. Functionalism addresses society as a whole by standards of norms, customs, traditions, and institutions. While once criticized for failure to account for social change and ignoring systematic inequalities that naturally produce tension and conflict. Jose Flores Blackstone Academy Charter School Are all Americans grateful for the things they have? What if Americans do not to have the proper basic needs? Many Americans do face this situation and it is called poverty. The top three causes of poverty in United States are lack of education, unemployment and the high cost of health insurance. Americans can overcome the high rate of poverty and alleviate their struggles by maintaining and furthering their education which will lead to higher paying jobs and with good medical benefits. Having the flood at this period of time was a good thing. It put many Rhode Islanders back to work. However, many small business are closing down in RI, causing many people to lose their jobs. This is due to the high taxes, fees and regulations that small businesses face if they want to operate in Rhode Island. All these factors in Rhode Island have impacted the high unemployment rate thus leading to the high state of poverty. Another factor that will lead one into poverty is the inability to afford health insurance. A journalist from the Providence Journal, Dujardin, mentioned that "Rhode Island has an average of 18,000 children 17 years of age and younger who were without health coverage between 2007 and 2009, up from the 16,000 average recorded three years earlier" (Richard C. Dujardin 1). It is not required by law that people should purchase their own health insurance in RI. Not purchasing health insurance can cause a very serious situation. For example, if one were to be in a car accident or become ill, not having the medical insurance, they will have to pay large amount of money out of their own pockets. Lastly, one of the biggest causes of poverty is lack of education. In the United States, everyone is entitled to a free and appropriated public education. However, not many take advantage of that opportunity. In Rhode Island, 91% of high school students attend school but only 76% of them graduate out of the whole state. In Central ... I never really imagined how life could be differently if I grew up in a different social class. Up to this point in my life, my family has mainly been a "middle class" family. Money isn 't thrown around in my family like its nothing, but we 've had a very good living style due to the hard work of my parents. Many times growing up my parents always told me to be grateful for what we have and to never complain because there 's people out there who would love to have what we have as a family. As a child I was lucky enough to have this experience with my family but I may not have had this opportunity if it wasn 't for growing up in the middle class. Vacations are very expensive, especially when they are only a week long and families spend thousands of dollars on them. That would be a lot of extra money for families to come up with, especially families who aren 't in the higher low class or middle class and "annual income per adult averages between $18,000–$30,000 per year." (Cliffsnotes) Not having those vacation experiences would be a huge loss and I wouldn't have had some of my best childhood experiences with my family. They have always been great influences around me, and are always telling me what the right and wrong things are to do. Some people walk through the motions of life and never fully understand what living is really about–it is more than paying bills, earning an education, and having a family. By definition, philosophy is: "a search for a general understanding of values and reality by chiefly speculative rather than observational means".1 Humankind has studied philosophy for many years trying to figure out the complex meaning of life, an example being Plato one of the greatest Greek philosophers. Eventually they tried Socrates, found him guilty of impiety and demeaning the youth, and executed him in 399 BCE. The reason why the Greeks thought Socrates was corrupting the youth is because he said the gods of Greece were unreliable and lacking 11(Ancient). Plato was emotionally affected by the life and death of Socrates. Socrates work influence Plato so much, he surrounded himself with members of Socrates and became a member himself. This question leads to the main theme of the story, fact against fancy, that author has never been written this kind of plot in his other stories before. In fact, Hard Times is considered as "the unlike–the–rest of Dickens' works" (Collins, 1992, p.xi) because the plot is not involved the social problems in Victorian Age such as poverty or child labor, but it is "an abstract that exalts instinct above reason." The situation becomes worse when women bear an illegitimate child and such behavior is considered as one of the sinful acts in the Puritan society. Evidence of both the reflection of The Romantic Period and Ms. Shelley's impact on it are found in her background, the time period itself (as well as modern times) and in Frankenstein. The other very important event that affected Mary's life, but especially Frankenstein, was the loss of a child before writing her famous novel (Biography.com Editors) (Cliffsnotes Editors). It's very clear that in Ms. Shelley's book, Dr. Frankenstein is trying to resurrect someone from the dead; having knowledge on Mary's background actually leads many people to believe that this idea of resurrection is coming from her wanting to bring back the only child she had ever birthed (Biography.com Editors)(Cliffsnotes Editors). Mary fits in very naturally with the ideals of The Romantic Period; Frankenstein, her most famous novel, clearly reflects this. In Frankenstein, the creature is rejected from society because of his grotesque appearance, lack of manners, and lack of intelligence. Through interaction, we socialize with our family, friends, people in the community to strengthen our relationship with each other. Through socialization, human society is established and become the foundation for everything inside the society. Our society is more complex than any society found in nature, but it's not perfect nor ideal for every member inside the society. Thus, the thought of an ideal society as well as how to achieve that society is very fascinating among sociologists, whose role is to solve social problems and develop this theory. Human society is composed of multiple factors: individuals who work together in the same environment and contribute to the society; cultures which were passed down by previous generations and become the foundation for the future in spirituals, values, beliefs and norms; materials that people consume or use to develop society and improve their live (agriculture, infrastructure...); social organizations and institutions which regulate the behavior of people like laws, religions, government, religions...to help guide them down the path accepted by the majority. Another inner quality that defines John Proctor is the value he holds to his good name. Proctor is a firm believer in the fact that one's name is the only thing that remains after death, and what is done with it while living can affect one's posterity for generations. This is the driving force behind his actions in the final act of the play.
