Half of global petroleum goes to transportation. According to a memo released by the Global Fuel Economy Initiative, within the transportation sector, light and heavy-duty vehicles account for more than 80% of the sector’s energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in 2010. Heavy-duty vehicles include a diverse mix of vehicles that account for 45 % of fuel consumption in the transport sector in China, 52% in India, and 35% in Brazil.

The system of testing cars to measure fuel economy and CO2 emissions is utterly discredited. This report analyses the gap between test results and real-world performance and finds that it has become a chasm, increasing from 8% in 2001 to 31% in 2012 and 40% in 2014. Without action this gap will grow to nearly 50% by 2020.
Mercedes cars have the biggest average gap between test and real-world performance, with real-world fuel consumption exceeding test results by nearly half. None of the improvement in emissions measured in tests of Opel/Vauxhall cars since 2008 has delivered improvement on the road, and their real-world fuel economy is actually getting worse. Just a fifth of the apparent improvement in emissions from the launch of the Mark 7 VW Golf (Europe’s best-selling car) have been achieved on the road.
This report definitively shows current systems for vehicle testing of fuel economy and CO2 emissions don’t work and the proposed introduction of the new WLTP test seems likely to deliver limited and only temporary improvements. Systematic changes to the way cars are tested, regulated and taxed are needed to ensure cars are decarbonised on the road and not just in laboratories. The technologies to reduce emissions are available – what is missing is a robust policy framework to ensure these are delivered.

2) Adopt ambitious CO2 emissions targets for 2025 and 2030 for cars, vans, and later for trucks and buses. Ambitious CO2 targets will drive the electrification of vehicles and help meet Paris Agreement goals. The letter argues these policies will boost the European zero-emissions vehicle industry and economy.

Presented at the Global Fuel Economy Initiative ‘Accelerator Symposium’ on September 5th, ahead of the September 2014 UN Climate Summit.
The Symposium hosted by the French Government at the Ministry of Ecology Sustainable Development and Energy on 5th September, provided a forum for countries, experts, NGOs and the private sector to advance the agenda on fuel economy globally and prepare for the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s Climate Summit.
Government representatives from a wide range of countries working on fuel economy policies participated in the Symposium. Countries presenting at the Symposium included China, Georgia Kenya and Mauritius. There were more than 70 delegates attending the symposium from around the world with countries represented including Chile, Costa Rica, Hungary, Ivory Coast, Kosovo, Peru, Sri Lanka, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the UAE, Uganda and Vietnam. Organisations included Transport & Environment, the FIA, ExxonMobil, Michelin, Renault, CEDARE, the OECD and the World Bank.

An economic assessment of low carbon vehicles
This technical and macro-economic study focuses on light duty vehicles -- cars and vans. It has been advised by a broad group of stakeholders in the move to low-carbon transport, including auto producers, technology suppliers, labour groups, energy providers and environmental groups. The resulting fact-base is anticipated to serve as a reference point for discussions around the low-carbon transition.
The model results show that a shift to low-carbon cars and vans increases spending on vehicle technology, a sector in which Europe excels, therefore generating positive direct employment impacts. This shift will also reduce the total cost of running Europe’s auto fleet, leading to mildly positive economic impacts including indirect employment gains.
The analysis showed that a shift to low-carbon vehicles would increase spending on vehicle technology, therefore generating positive direct employment impacts, but potentially adding €1,000-€1,100 to the capital cost of the average new car in 2020. However, these additional technology costs would be offset by fuel savings of around €400 per year, indicating an effective break-even point for drivers of approximately three
years. At the EU level, the cost of running and maintaining the European car fleet would become €33-35 billion lower each year than in a “do nothing scenario” by 2030, leading to positive economic impacts including indirect employment gains.

Presented at the Global Fuel Economy Initiative ‘Accelerator Symposium’ on September 5th, ahead of the September 2014 UN Climate Summit.
The Symposium hosted by the French Government at the Ministry of Ecology Sustainable Development and Energy on 5th September, provided a forum for countries, experts, NGOs and the private sector to advance the agenda on fuel economy globally and prepare for the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s Climate Summit.
Government representatives from a wide range of countries working on fuel economy policies participated in the Symposium. Countries presenting at the Symposium included China, Georgia Kenya and Mauritius. There were more than 70 delegates attending the symposium from around the world with countries represented including Chile, Costa Rica, Hungary, Ivory Coast, Kosovo, Peru, Sri Lanka, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the UAE, Uganda and Vietnam. Organisations included Transport & Environment, the FIA, ExxonMobil, Michelin, Renault, CEDARE, the OECD and the World Bank.

An economic assessment of low carbon vehicles
This technical and macro-economic study focuses on light duty vehicles -- cars and vans. It has been advised by a broad group of stakeholders in the move to low-carbon transport, including auto producers, technology suppliers, labour groups, energy providers and environmental groups. The resulting fact-base is anticipated to serve as a reference point for discussions around the low-carbon transition.
The model results show that a shift to low-carbon cars and vans increases spending on vehicle technology, a sector in which Europe excels, therefore generating positive direct employment impacts. This shift will also reduce the total cost of running Europe’s auto fleet, leading to mildly positive economic impacts including indirect employment gains.
The analysis showed that a shift to low-carbon vehicles would increase spending on vehicle technology, therefore generating positive direct employment impacts, but potentially adding €1,000-€1,100 to the capital cost of the average new car in 2020. However, these additional technology costs would be offset by fuel savings of around €400 per year, indicating an effective break-even point for drivers of approximately three
years. At the EU level, the cost of running and maintaining the European car fleet would become €33-35 billion lower each year than in a “do nothing scenario” by 2030, leading to positive economic impacts including indirect employment gains.

On 18th of September 2015, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a Notice of Violation of the Clean Air Act accusing Volkswagen of having equipped its US diesel models with a “defeat device” software. In real-life conditions, the emissions were 10 to 40 times above those measured during the official testing.
Around 500,000 cars in the US and over 11 million cars worldwide have been equipped with the rigged engine Type EA189. The so-called “Diesel Gate” quickly sparked global outrage, leading to the resignation of VW CEO, Martin Winterkorn, who was replaced by Matthias Müller, former Porsche CEO and putting the entire sector under suspicion.
Most EU countries ordered investigations to be conducted on random vehicles to verify their compliance with Euro norms. The scandal broke out at a crucial time for the automotive sector as the EU is in the process of adopting a “real-drive emissions test” (RDE). The European Commission found itself also under high pressure as the media accused it of being too com-placent towards the car industry while being aware of the real-drive emissions gap since many years.

On 24th January 2013, the European Commission proposed an ambitious set of measures, known as the “Clean Power for Transport package”, to solve the chicken-or-egg problem hampering the market uptake of clean (and in particular electric) vehicles in Europe.
The initiative aimed at ensuring the necessary build-up of alternative fuel stations across Europe with common standards for their design and use and included a proposal for a Directive on the deployment of alternative fuels recharging and refuelling infrastructure.
After extensive inter-institutional negotiations between the Commission, the Council and the European Parliament, the Directive was finally adopted on 29th September 2014. It requires Member States to develop national policy frameworks for the market development of clean vehicles, foresees the use of common technical specifications for recharging and refuelling stations and requests the setting up of consumer information on alternative fuels.

Results of geophysics and pneumatic injection pilot tests during 2003 – 2007 yielded significant positive results for injection delivery design and contaminant mass treatment, resulting in permanent shut-down of an existing groundwater Pump & Treat system.
Accessible source areas were subsequently removed (2011) by soil excavation and treated with the placement of Emulsified Vegetable Oil EVO and zero-valent iron ZVI to accelerate treatment of impacted groundwater in overburden and weathered fractured bedrock. Post pilot test and post remediation groundwater monitoring has included analyses of CVOCs, organic fatty acids, dissolved gases and QuantArray® -Chlor to quantify key microorganisms (e.g., Dehalococcoides, Dehalobacter, etc.) and functional genes (e.g., vinyl chloride reductase, methane monooxygenase, etc.) to assess potential for reductive dechlorination and aerobic cometabolism of CVOCs.
In 2022, the first commercial application of MetaArray™ was performed at the site. MetaArray™ utilizes statistical analysis, such as principal component analysis and multivariate analysis to provide evidence that reductive dechlorination is active or even that it is slowing. This creates actionable data allowing users to save money by making important site management decisions earlier.
The results of the MetaArray™ analysis’ support vector machine (SVM) identified groundwater monitoring wells with a 80% confidence that were characterized as either Limited for Reductive Decholorination or had a High Reductive Reduction Dechlorination potential. The results of MetaArray™ will be used to further optimize the site’s post remediation monitoring program for monitored natural attenuation.

The popularity of functional foods among scientists and common people has been increasing day by day. Awareness and modernization make the consumer think better regarding food and nutrition. Now a day’s individual knows very well about the relation between food consumption and disease prevalence. Humans have a diversity of microbes in the gut that together form the gut microflora. Probiotics are the health-promoting live microbial cells improve host health through gut and brain connection and fighting against harmful bacteria. Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus are the two bacterial genera which are considered to be probiotic. These good bacteria are facing challenges of viability. There are so many factors such as sensitivity to heat, pH, acidity, osmotic effect, mechanical shear, chemical components, freezing and storage time as well which affects the viability of probiotics in the dairy food matrix as well as in the gut. Multiple efforts have been done in the past and ongoing in present for these beneficial microbial population stability until their destination in the gut. One of a useful technique known as microencapsulation makes the probiotic effective in the diversified conditions and maintain these microbe’s community to the optimum level for achieving targeted benefits. Dairy products are found to be an ideal vehicle for probiotic incorporation. It has been seen that the encapsulated microbial cells show higher viability than the free cells in different processing and storage conditions as well as against bile salts in the gut. They make the food functional when incorporated, without affecting the product sensory characteristics.

Water contamination is one of the major causes of water borne diseases worldwide. In Kenya, approximately 43% of people lack access to potable water due to human contamination. River Kuywa water is currently experiencing contamination due to human activities. Its water is widely used for domestic, agricultural, industrial and recreational purposes. This study aimed at characterizing bacteria and fungi in river Kuywa water. Water samples were randomly collected from four sites of the river: site A (Matisi), site B (Ngwelo), site C (Nzoia water pump) and site D (Chalicha), during the dry season (January-March 2018) and wet season (April-July 2018) and were transported to Maseno University Microbiology and plant pathology laboratory for analysis. The characterization and identification of bacteria and fungi were carried out using standard microbiological techniques. Nine bacterial genera and three fungi were identified from Kuywa river water. Clostridium spp., Staphylococcus spp., Enterobacter spp., Streptococcus spp., E. coli, Klebsiella spp., Shigella spp., Proteus spp. and Salmonella spp. Fungi were Fusarium oxysporum, Aspergillus flavus complex and Penicillium species. Wet season recorded highest bacterial and fungal counts (6.61-7.66 and 3.83-6.75cfu/ml) respectively. The results indicated that the river Kuywa water is polluted and therefore unsafe for human consumption before treatment. It is therefore recommended that the communities to ensure that they boil water especially for drinking.

The incorporation of a 3DCSM and completion of HRSC provided a tool for enhanced, data-driven, decisions to support a change in remediation closure strategies. Currently, an approved pilot study has been obtained to shut-down the remediation systems (ISCO, P&T) and conduct a hydraulic study under non-pumping conditions. A separate micro-biological bench scale treatability study was competed that yielded positive results for an emerging innovative technology. As a result, a field pilot study has commenced with results expected in nine-twelve months. With the results of the hydraulic study, field pilot studies and an updated risk assessment leading site monitoring optimization cost lifecycle savings upwards of $15MM towards an alternatively evolved best available technology remediation closure strategy.

- 1. FUEL EFFICIENCY REGULATIONS & STANDARDS Half of global petroleum goes to transportation. According to a memo released by the Global Fuel Economy Initiative, within the transportation sector, light and heavy-duty vehicles account for more than 80% of the sector’s energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in 2010. Heavy-duty vehicles include a diverse mix of vehicles that account for 45 % of fuel consumption in the transport sector in China, 52% in India, and 35% in Brazil. All of the major vehicle markets - the US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Korea, China and Japan - have developed some form of greenhouse gas emission standards or regulations. EU, China, Japan set or proposed greenhouse gas targets to 2020, while the US and Canada have established standards to 2025. The picture is, however, very different from one country to another. There has been tremendous policy progress in most major markets: USA In 2011, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) finalized the first phase of fuel-efficiency standards for medium and heavy- duty trucks, saying that big rigs and semi trucks were required to achieve a 20 % reduction; heavy- duty pickup trucks and vans were required to achieve a 15% reduction; and delivery trucks, buses and garbage trucks were required to achieve a 10% reduction. EPA's regulations give instructions on how to test vehicles, measure, calculate and report fuel economy information and affect the period of 2014 to 2018. Canada In 2010, Canada finalized its regulations to limit greenhouse gas (GHG ) emissions, anticipating that the average GHG emissions performance of the 2016 Canadian fleet of new cars and light trucks would match an average level of 153 g CO2/km. The final rules for the Motor Vehicle Fuel Consumption Standards Act were published as Passenger Automobile and Light Truck Greenhouse Gas Emission Regulations in 2010. China China first adopted fuel consumption standards in 2004. The standard established “Phase I” and “Phase II” fuel consumption standards, which were phased-in from 2005-2006 and 2008-2009. In 2009, China announced the development of Phase III of its fuel consumption regulation program, to be phased-in from 2012 to 2015. In addition to specific fuel consumption limits by weight class, the Phase III standards established a corporate - average fuel consumption (CAFC) target which manufacturers are required to comply with.
- 2. European Union Europe first introduced vehicle emission standards in 1988. The "Euro" track was first established in 1992 with increasingly stringent standards implemented every few years. Euro I standards were introduced in 1992, followed by the introduction of Euro II regulations in 1996. These standards applied to both truck engines and urban buses. The EU introduced the Euro III standards in 2000, and the Euro IV/V standards in 2005 and 2008. The Euro III and Euro IV standards were preceded by the introduction of more stringent fuel regulations , initiatives that have resulted in region-wide supply of both gasoline and diesel fuel with near-zero sulfur content. Fuel economy regulations and standards are currently in effect around the world, driving development and introduction of new energy-efficient technologies.
