General Santos City National High School (GSCNHS) is located
at Barangay Calumpang, General Santos City. There are two
elementary schools facing GSCNHS namely: Cahilsot I and Cahilsot II.
Acharon Sports Complex can be seen at the back of the school.
The school campus is well-organized. There are benches and a
couple of trees in front of the classroom and/or buildings. Lots of colors
can be seen around the campus, benches are blue, trees are green,
etc., it all perfectly fit the school environment. There are a number of
new buildings which are already functional and in fact, a four-storey
building will soon be constructed at GSCNHS. Old buildings are still in
good condition and appropriate for effective learning to happen.
The school offices are located for the convenience of everyone.
It is situated right at the front of main gate. Silence is observed in these

7 Mindanao State University, General Santos City Episode 1-TheSchool as a Learning Environment
My Analysis
1. How do the school campus and the classroom in particular impact on the
learning of the students going to school? What are your conclusions?
The school campus and the classroom greatly affect the
student’s motivation in going to school. If they observed that the
school is well-managed and the facilities are good, then they will be
encouraged to go to class every day. Rules are also implemented
in the school. The students would feel secured, relaxed and do not
get easily distracted. In this way, teaching and learning process
would happen effectively.
I can say that the school campus and classroom setting
greatly influences the students’ interest in learning and going to
school.
2. How does this relate to your knowledge of child and adolescent development?
How does this relate to your knowledge of facilitating learning?
Students will always prefer a school environment which will
offer them both learning and comfort. A clean and well-organized
school community will give this kind of comfort to the students.
Also, exercising themselves in following the school rules and
seeing the teachers and other school personnel doing the same
would develop them to be a responsible individual, following certain
regulation wherever community they’re in.
Same is true for me, as an observer of the school; I would
also develop myself and be a more responsible person which will
be very useful for my future profession. I will be able to apply what I
learned from the actual observation in this subject to my future job.
I would be able to gain knowledge on how to facilitate learning
through a clean and well-managed classroom and school
environment where effective learning would occur.
FIELD STUDY 1: THE LEARNER’S DEVELOPMENT AND ENVIRONMENT
8 Mindanao State University, General Santos City Episode 1-TheSchool as a Learning Environment
My Reflections
1. Would you like to teach in the school environment you just observed? Why or
why not?
Yes, I would like to teach in this kind of learning
environment. This school could greatly help me in being a very
competent educator and I can also see that this institution offers the
kind of learning every student need.
2. What kind of school campus is conducive to learning?
A school campus is conducive to learning if it is clean,
facilities are functional, free from distractions and there is security.
3. What kind of classroom is conducive to learning?
A classroom is conducive to learning if it is clean, well-
organized, the tables and chairs are in good condition and there are
appropriate learning materials available. It must also be well-
ventilated and there are lights for the classroom to be bright
enough.
4. In the future, how can you accomplish your answer in number 3?
I can accomplish this by having classroom facilities which
are clean, appropriate and well-arranged. I will maintain this order
in my classroom with the help of my students. I will teach them on
how to take care of these things by assigning them tasks and daily
routines.
5. Write your additional learning and insights here.
Properly managed classrooms and school environments
would affect the student’s motivation in going to school. Thus,
facilities must always be in good condition for effective learning to
happen.
