Packaging for Chocolate Sweet Potato Frosting
Phoebe Unger
November 29th, 2017
FS 303 Fall 2017
Summary:
Our company’s product is a rich, creamy, smooth chocolate sweet potato frosting. This
product needs to be able to easily be applied to cookies, cupcakes, and cakes in whatever amount
the individual consumer desires. The recommended packaging for this product would be a hot
sealed reusable pouch. This packaging is reasonably cheap, costing between $0.08 and $0.13
depending on the size of the pouch.1 This packaging design contributes to our marketing plan,
because we want to provide an easy to use packaging that will allow them to decorate straight
from the bag, and this packaging design will do just that.
Technical requirements:
The size of the packaging would be 4”x 2”x 8” and would hold 24oz of product. This is
considered a family serving, holding enough to frost 1 cake, 12 cupcakes or 24 cookies per
pouch. The consumers will be able to decorate their food straight from the package, all they will
have to do it remove the cap and decorate as they please. In the store, people would purchase
these packages individually off the shelf, but they would be shipped to the store in a case of 48
units. The product will not need to be heated before use and can be used directly from the
package after purchase. If the customer does not use the whole package at once, it can be
resealed by screwing the cap back on, and may be kept in a refrigerator until later use. When
they do want to use it later it will only need to be brought back to room temperature before use.
The strength requirement to open this package is about the same as that of opening a bottle of
water.
This packaging will promote the company’s core values of environmental stewardship
because there will be a program that recycles the pouches. Once the pouches are empty they will
need to be shipped back to the company. There they will be collected and cleaned and will then
be remolded to a new recycled product. People will have incentive to partake in this program
because they can earn points that will donate money to the school or organization of their
choice.2
The label on the packaging will identify the product in big letters on the front. It will be
bright and colorful to catch the consumer’s eye. The front will also display the net quantity of the
product in small writing on the front. The back of the package will show nutritional facts in a
table, and the ingredients in descending order of amount in small writing as well as the potential
allergens. The manufacture name and address, and the country of origin will also be on the back
in smaller writing.
This product will be shelf stable until opened. The product will keep up to 8 months if
unopened or up to two weeks after opening and refrigerated. The product will be displayed in the
baking isle of stores by the cake mixes and other frosting.
Distribution requirements:
The packages of frosting will need a tertiary packaging, because the packages of frosting
are rather small and would be hard to transport otherwise. The tertiary packaging would be a
16”x 12”x 10” corrugated cardboard box. This package is still eco-friendly because the card
board can be recycled. The optimal storage conditions for this product would be room
temperature and to be kept out the light. This box will help contribute to the storage conditions
because is a solid color and not transparent.
Cost:
Packaging: $0.08- $0.13 per pouch and lid
Cardboard boxes: $1.05 each
